Starfarer

Man, I'm kinda leaning towards the Starfarer over my Hull C. I like the idea that it has a two man crew instead of three (more soloable), can gather an important resource, and has close to the amount of cargo space as the Hull C.

Unfortunately, this release will likely not have LTI, and I don't want to melt a LTI ship for a non-LTI ship. It might be best to wait until everything is flyable and just CCU the Hull C into a Starfarer at a much later date.

Curious on your guys thoughts.

The new Starfarer artwork looks great!

The exterior design hasn't changed much from the concept art -- they just added more details, where appropriate.

The standard Starfarer isn't a ship for me, but I'm interested in the Starfarer Gemini (or Star-G), for its military support applications. I expect it's a bad idea to fly alongside a Starfarer filled with fuel when venturing into Vanduul space or Lawless star systems. Whereas an armoured Star-G is designed to take hits without going kaboom! I expect that as long as the Star-G is protected by escort-fighters, it should be all right.

Presumably the Star-G won't carry as much fuel as a standard Starfarer, but I expect Gemini captains can charge a premium 'hazard pay" price for refueling ships in hostile territory. :D

The cargo capacity comparison could well be somewhat misleading. Your Hull C can carry a much wider variety of goods, the Starfarer as standard will be mostly (if not all) fluids. Both will almost certainly be able to adopt either solids, fluids, and other things like the fighter ship frames. Its quite likely the Hull C will have a wider variety of stuff to move (and more competition, in terms of numbers and shipping alternatives) while the Starfarer would be more limited. Fuel might not even be an expensive commodity, especially if its freely available to farm (like mining asteroids), but it'll be a good earner to start with because you dont need to fill all that cargo space with bought goods (or be a courier for the owner).

As for CCU'ing across. Highly unlikely. The Starfarer was $175 at concept, $195 since. The Hull C was $200. By the time both are in the game and a CCU option is available, the Hull C will definitely be more than $200 and unless the upcoming overhaul allows you to convert ship A to B and received the difference in store credit, then you wont be able to CCU down. With the current CCU rules, the best you could hope for would be to CCU to the Star-G if you really wanted to hold onto the LTI.

I'll be considering my options when more info is available on the Star-G. I suspect too many of the things which bring the price up, arent going to be of much use to me and my small Org, and the almost certain sacrifice in capacity would be a noticeable loss. I think i'd only be tempted if i could sell the Starfarer at a premium for its LTI, and it cover the extra expense the Star-G would command.

Lose LTI & fuel capacity

Gain firepower & better defensive capability

I bought mine grey, so its unlike theres any profit to be had, but it might make a decent swap. Im happy with the Starfarer as-is so far though.

It could just be more heavily armored and armed and only lose some of the internal storage space instead of the external storage capability.

It could... but it wont ;)

Who knows, i just suspect that they'll make you compromise - after all, they've done this well with all the other ships, where there isnt really 1 superior ship, they each excel at something in their own way and you're not meant to have a superior solution, just a solution that does the job you want better than another. So i'd expect them to make us sacrifice fluid tanks and internal cargo space, or something that doesnt make it a Starfarer 2.0, does everything a Starfarer does and is tough as nails.

I'd prefer an Uber Starfarer for myself, holds 10x capacity, is microscopic in size, travels faster than the speed of light etc :D, but i fully expect them to make us think about what role we're interested in, and which best fits that role.

I think what you suggest would be the most logical solution, dont get me wrong, i just think they'll prefer a balanced solution, rather than a ideal/practical one (taking an existing ship, making it better and sacrificing as little as possible).

I'm digging the full on captains quarters!  We can see the hydrogen scoop in the nose now. Or at least I'm assuming that's what it is.

That means that the old cutaway will need to be overhauled signifigantly.

I have this sneaking suspicion that this picture is wildly out of scale...unless our people are actually Kerbals.  From the recently released pictures, I'd expect two decks that'll be quite long.  Upper deck is more or less the same-flight deck and crew quarters with turret access.  Lower floor is an industrial floor with ship systems and access to that giant intercooler/hydrogen scoop thing.  One thing to note though, is that the big turret is set very high on the new ship model-it'll require quite the access tube to get into it OR we'll have a little more space to use there.

I don't expect we'll have a three story cargo bay on our starfarers-though it would be really cool to see an internal space that gigantic.

According to Ben Lesnick on today's RTV, The Starfarer Gemini (Star-G) will be treated as a "concept sale"  (i.e. complete w/ LTI)  and it will sell for $240  (the regular Starfarer will be selling for about $195, or the same price as the previous sale).  Also, there WILL be an upgrade to convert the regular Starfarer to the Star-G

There will also be a series of Q&A posts on the Starfarer (like the ones on the Hull series) based upon questions asked in a Q&A thread going up on the forum.

I'm pleased that CIG is offering the Starfarer Gemini with LTI, as if it were a Concept Sale. Presumably that's because it's the military variant, which has a distinct designation, so it's treated as a new ship.

I can't complain about the $240 price, because it's $45 more than the standalone Starfarer at $195, which is typical for the top-tier upgrade model of a ship in its price range -- it's actually less than the Super Hornet or Freelancer MIS upgrades, which were both $55.

I hope that $$ translates into a heavily modified hull with the fuel tanks completely enclosed by armoured hull plating, as well as extra weapons (perhaps automated point-defence turrets on the rear), and more powerful engines, shields, and power plant.

I can't wait to see the Gemini tonight! :) (Hopefully it won't take until 11:30 PST this time. :P )

While the exact specs will come out tonight (and I might have missed something mentioned in the discussion), what Ben said on RTV was:

Star-G Improvements (over the regular Starfarer)

  • Bigger Engines
  • One size bigger weapons (bigger hardpoint) on the manned mounts
  • One size bigger shields
  • More armor

Star-G weaknesses (over the regular Starfarer)

  • Slower (acceleration?) & less maneuverable
  • slightly reduced cargo (dry cargo?) room

Yeah, I'm curious to see the exact changes. Hopefully they'll update the ship pages with a cutaway or something to let us make an educated pledge. Either way with an upcoming Q/A post we'll be able to get our questions in.

The standard variant already has two PDTs on the back. :)  Nothing covering from above which is somewhat problematic. If you're fueling and get attacked, to provide a better FOF to the rear turrets you have to nose into the sun. HAHAHA. Out of the frying pan, into the fire indeed.

Just like we have a separate thread for each Connie Variant (Phoenix, Taurus, Aquila, and Andromeda) - there is a new thread for specifically the Gemini.  I'll post more from CIG on it there once it goes live.  I've added the RTV notes to the post for now.  Looking forward to it and it is something I am going to increase my pledge for :)

Images will be different between a standard Starfarer and a Gemini - so it would be confusing to show them on the same thread.

Holy hell, the amount of crazed ass-hurt over on the RSI forums would qualify as hilarious if it weren't quite so frightening that there exist so many people with so poor a grasp on reality.  One little LTI sale and they lose their minds.  I was reading the thread working my way up toward unleashing on the morons when I saw Gerald's post, which pretty much said what I was going to say.  That is when I realized I'd much rather stay here and not go swimming with the loons.

Let them squabble, all funds go toward a greater end-game and that's a huge win to us all.

Meanwhile, I'm gazing starry-eyed at all the new titbits of awesomeness coming from the goodship Starfarer. I swooned when I saw the aquarium in the office. I always hoped the Phoenix would have one of those instead of a jacuzzi (well, that or have a transparent floor and put a shark-tank in the cargo bay). So far, this space truck is shaping up to be one of my most coveted possessions!
