The Quest to Find the Perfect Computer Chair

I'm in search of a new computer chair and I need your help here at Imperium! I know there are a ton of you that obviously sit in a computer chair as part of your daily gaming/work routines, so I thought, "Why not ask this awesome group of people here at Imperium, instead of just trudging through countless reviews written by who even knows?"

So here's some info: I'd love to keep the price under $300, and even better if under $200. I need something that offers great support and comfort for prolonged amounts of time, because I've broken my coccyx twice, and just any old chair without proper support and cushion will simply leave me in pain after a few minutes (no, it's not still broken, but it's an injury that has had a lasting effect). I will be using this chair for gaming, online college coursework, and possible even and online job (if I can ever manage to snag one). I'm about 6'4" and weighing in at around 230 pounds, so I need something that's adjustable in height and isn't flimsy. Also some wheels for moving around the desk, or moving the chair would be great as well. Some of the above might be tmi, but I think even the smallest details help when searching for the right product.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Thanks! :)   :D

Edit: Also if you post please just don't drop me a link, I want to hear something about the product from you, like personal experience, etc. Really sell it! Thanks again!

Haha. Great feedback there, but let's keep this serious, and keep the spam out. I hope that isn't too much to ask. I've seen in the past how this community gathers around it's members looking for help, advice, and guidance when it comes to making purchases and they often get it. I was simply hoping for the same.

At work i use this:

post-4185-0-20425800-1402994715.jpg

Interstuhl 152G, with all the extras. It's really comfortable. Probably to expensive for you though, if you can even get it in the US. (probably around 600-700$)

Little advice for you, good chairs are usually not cheap.

I have to agree with Schdormy, even though I do not know where the COCCYX is, this chair you are looking for might be a bit more than $300. I would advise to maybe save up another month or two and get a chair that can really provide comfort to the area were you have this injury. It is worth it in the long run.

I am using this one for a few months now since my old one wasn't in a great condition anymore after 14 years of use:

The one that @Niwa linked is actually from the same company. However, they changed their DXRacer line to the Maxnomics design in February / March.

PS: If you go on the German or EU based site (left side you can choose your region), you get more info on the weight / height the seat is ment for / optimal use.

How much do you weigh? You size delegates the kind of chair you need especially with your injury.  I use one of these for back support:

http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/kiss-my-back-reg-ergonomic-mesh-back-support/1016757730

I didn't by mine from there...I mean...I have never stepped in that store.  Just saying.  Just in case anyone was to infer that I had.

But they are really comfortable, the problem is that the mesh is supported by a steel hoop and if you are fat then your 'love handles' are pinched by the hoops...because they spill out.  You might be able to get a similar one made of foam, or successfully shape the loops to fit you.  As for the cushion, you need a custom one. A 600 dollar chair will hurt you as bad as $20 steel fold out.

Walmart actually has good memory foam : http://www.walmart.com/ip/Carex-Memory-Foam-Coccyx-Cushion/10105193

Been told that the "racing  car look alike " chair(s) are amazing

tho it's also based on your size and how much support you want

best thing would be to find a store and try some and then order form the internet

Some of the "streamers who stream for 6-12 hours a day use desk where you can adjust the height

so you are able to stand for a few hours and then sit for a few hours

sitting in the same possession for a long time is bad for you

Hm I am right there with you @CollateralKhaos except I am on the other side of the spectrum I am 5'2 and weigh under 100 pounds :o

Computer chairs are just not made for the big and tall nor the short and small. I will keep a close watch on this thread though for myself since I am in dire need of a new chair, my oversized office chair causes my legs intense pain most likely due to my legs dangling from the chair :P

So if anyone can recommend a chair for me too that'd be great :D

But @CollateralKhaos I have a saying...don't be stingy on the things you use the most...like a computer, you on are on it for hours a day you want it to work and work very well so you spend money it...I think the same can be said for a computer chair since it is something you will most likely use a lot. Try to up your budget as much as possible because the better chairs are going to be more expensives....Your bum will thank me cause your bum is worth the extra 100-200 dollars in the long run  :P

I guess you have to decide what you are looking for in a chair. I just went through this myself and I decided I wanted comfort first and foremost. So I went with a recliner and a lapdesk so I could lay back and game. I have pictures and links but I am at work so I will have to post later.

I suggest the Rosewill By BOSS RFFC-13008 High Back for such a budget.

I own it and it is feels like I'm sitting on magic. It rolls across the floor liquid smooth, silent too, and the cushions feel like clouds. I lay back in absolute comfort the instant I sit down and forget I'm on an office chair. Since I'm a short person the chair is still too tall (ends up being a full body rester for me) but it is adjustable for height etc. The only complaint I have is that the arm rests are a little to short in length, should have been full length, but they are comfortable.

My mother also owns one and she sits in it for around 8 (sometimes 9+ for extra shifts) hours for work, and then again later for personal usage and says it is an amazing chair.

Obviously with a bigger budget there are better chairs out there, but for under 200$ this chair is amazing. :)

Here is the one I own:

There is also this one;

(a bit more, but made to be more durable)

I am already adapting my arm rests to allow me to strap on the Thruster and Stick.

Not saying you want to do this, but the flatter the arms the easier it would be.

The arms on mine look like Schdormy's, but the rest is more like the racer ones shown but with a smaller head rest. - DRUM out

  • 4 weeks later...

I'd recommend the Lorell Mesh Executive chair. My brother is over 200 pounds and has owned this chair for many years, but it shows very little wear and tear. It's about a 3rd the cost of the Aeron, too. It's the second one down on this page if you want more information about it. http://brandonhart100.hubpages.com/hub/ergonomic-chair-office#slide8001770
