It is a decent list but it is missing the newer ships like the Gladius and Mustang.  It is also missing some of the Alien ships that players can actually use like the Vanduul Scythe, Banu MM and Xi-An Scout.  Keep in mind that each ship can be outfitted (with Upgrade Slots) for various roles.  Also things are missing and somewhat subjective (like all lists like this are) --- An example would be an Avenger could be an excellent Passanger / Taxi or even Smuggling ship with its cryro beds.  It is also missing other important roles like Bounty Hunting, Information Running / Racing, etc...

Very true the upgrade will change things, I simply like the first look at each ship.

Meaning right now this ship is set for these roles, which can help make desicions on how to play a ship without expensive upgrades. But ya I believe I might take on this project and keep udating it as newer ships come out, I think that the video I got this from may have been a year old. *I completely forogt about raceing too :D

uhm. i heard it from several sources. i know for a fact that most of the ships have an upgrade slot for them to gather gas. they just need a second slot for refining it into fuel or at least that is my understanding. from browsing the forums i also learned that they are the only (check if im wrong here) ship that can refuel another out in space. which sort of makes them a moving fuel producing tanker. that special ability would naturally make them a major source of emergency fuel and a good ship to have for any long haul.

edit: okay i think that the first think i said about most ships being able to gather gas is not true. after checking the wiki i have confirmed that they are the only "real" mid flight fueling option and that they are a much safer way to transport fuel

Interesting, well we will see how the flight works just as soon as the dfm comes out, I'm going to be checking how well the drift option is because as a Logistics person, if you can get up to speed and then "drift" to your location that will make a huge impact on fuel usage.

Exploration Light:           Aurora ES, Aurora LX, 315p, Freelancer, Constellation

I'm not sure why the Freelancer and the constellation would fit in to both categories simultaneously, and IM not sure if they would fit as "lights" they would need to be medium class if not just mid-long range.

Exploration Mid-Long:    Freelancer, Constellation, Retaliator (mod needed), Zeus, Carrack, 890 Jump

Light Fighting:                Aurora MR, Aurora LN, 300i, 325a, F7a Hornet, Avenger, Mustang, Gladius

Medium Fighting:           F7c, Link(bomber), Voids(bomber)

Heavy Fighting:             F7c-M Super, Cutlass, Gladiator, Retaliator(bomer)

I'm not sure if I would fit the cutlass here, I agree it is a good fighter, but the freelancer out guns it in a standing fight. The cutlass is designed for a sneak attack/fast all weapons front attack along with super maneuverability. It seems to lend it self well to bounty hunting and piracy, where the maneuverability would allow for boarding actions of larger ships. Though it does stack well vs a hornet. I wonder if it would be worth exploring breaking the ships down by specialty first then by uses rather than the other way around. Good things so far.

Stealth:                          F7c-s Ghost

Tracking:                       F7c-r Tracker

Training:                        Avenger Trainer

Light Cargo:                 Aurora CL, Aurora LX,  315p, Cutlass, Gladiator, Freelancer

Again I don't know that the freelancer and cutlass are both medium and light cargo at the same time. Long range cargo seems to be an off category here.

Medium Cargo:            Cutlass, Freelancer, Constellation, Starfarer, Retaliator (30 t), T-XIII

Long Range Cargo:     Freelancer, Constellation, Starfarer, Banu Merchantman, Mover Transport, Tomahawks

Scouting:                     Avenger, 325a, 350r, M50, Cutlass, Xi-An Scout, Khartu

Pirates:                        Cutlass, Freelancer, Constellation, Caterpillar

Bounty Hunter:            Avenger, Freelancer, Constellation, Cutlass

Racing:                       350r, M50

Information Runner:    315p, Aurora LX, Avenger, Herald

Boarding:                   Crawler

Salvage:                     315p, Cutlass, Gladiator(10t), Retaliator, Starfarer(72t)

Smuggling:                Caterpillar, Freelancer, Constellation, Cutlass, Hull C

Passanger/Taxi:         Freelancer, Cutlass, Constellation, Retaliator (mod needed), 890 Jump

I think the list looks really good-- Questions and edits inline. The more I read through this the more I think the data points would be presented better as a "role then attribute" lay out- rather than attribute then role. And rather than being so specific you could zoom out a bit, so  a single role might fit several play styles. IE(example only!) Marauder might have bounty hunting, piracy, boarding, troop transport type of ships associated with it. Or Freighter that would encompass things like Cargo ships, long range explorers, and support ships.  Im sure we can come up with much more descriptive names than marauder and freighter but again just examples.

Think more like ship classes, where the ships in that class can perform different roles but the class as a whole and share a specialty. In any case this is looking really good and most of my comments/questions are just style points and clarification. Cool conversation let me know what you think..

EDIT - One last thing- I think it might also work well to go with a class system as you might find the same class of ship in every profession the clan offers-- So by going with class first it would lend it self better to folks trying to find a ship to fill a role-- were they are able to look at role, then see -- in role X the cargo ships is-- or the escort ship is-- As each profession will have to dabble in other roles as well.

Thanks for the feedback, I really liked your comments and edited the list. I agree it was redundant to have constelations/ freelancers in both categories, my thinking was since it can do large then it can do the ones below it medium and small, and to make a "ship roles for dummies" guide I put them in all categories, but ya I like the short version, I also quickly made a short/med/long range cargo section so it's not an off category anymore. *along with a heavy cargo

As for the roles I know that using upgrade slots you could make any ship fit almost any role, like adding fuel pods to an Avenger to make it travel long distances for cargo. But I wanted to make this list for; what can this ship do right out of the gates, no mods needed.

Hi, the Aegis Dynemics Surveyor is not in the Salvage list, "The Aegis Surveyor is an industrial salvage ship. Equipped with a reinforced cargo bay, a long-range jump drive and launch pods for unmanned drones, the Surveyor is an ideal ship for taking advantage of deep space wrecks. Tractor beams, floodlights, scanner options and docking ports round out the tools on this capable, utilitarian spacecraft." that is it's description (I really want one :D)

Also the Banu Merchantman is the only ship that I have see with a "negotiation room" so it will fit on the "diplomacy" category ;)

Suggests that you include Caterpillar to the list that compiles the size regarding cargo space: Light-Heavy Cargo. as other "Smuggling" ships are included in the list.

Otherwise I think the list is a very good reference.

I've been looking at ship sizes to get an idea of their potential and to make a simple categorization . The classification would be based on their signature \ size.

10 to 25 meters:      The fighters. (one or two pilots, versatile, often adaptable) Spacecraft class

29 to 50 meters:      The small ships (Freelancer and Cutlass - Small enough to 1-2 crew but large enough for advanced operations) Small Ship Class

55 to 80 meters:      The multi-role ships (great for small crews and general mission platforms - the flag ship of most group) Medium Ship Class

90 to 225 meters:    The Haulers ( small crew, lots of value transported) Large Ship Class

240 meters and up: The Capital ships (large crew, lots of offence and defense, heavy in logistics) Capital Ship Class

Hi again!

I love the updates-- It's looking good. As I was looking at it was thinking about the fullness of the detail, but it was getting a little busy for my eyes / mind to quickly grab data as a whole vs. finding a specific thing I need. I was thinking this level of detail might lend it self well to a eye chart. Something you can see the high-level at a glance and then look closer to the fine detail. If you would like, I can grab your data and put it in to an eye chart of some kind and we can tweak it from there.  What do you think?

thanks,

-xeno

I did some googling, lo and behold:

Drake maintains that the Caterpillar, a sprawling, modular spacecraft which appears at least somewhat like its namesake, is for legitimate commerce and extended search and rescue missions… but at the end of the day, the Caterpillar is truly the evil twin of the Freelancer. Designed for supporting pirate operations, the Caterpillar features a large cargo hold for carrying loot, heavier armor than other freighters in its class and room for five crew able to serve in boarding operations. Despite its heavier armor, the Caterpillar isn’t a bulldog… a succesful operation will require a fighter escort.

So thanks @Togerah  for the find :)
