Grue
Greetings all, This game has got me all worked up, and I for one can't wait a year to get some more flight time. I know I'm not the only one with an itchy trigger finger, so I have decided to announce one of the first Star Citizen community events, FreeSpace FlightNight, sponsored by The Brown Coats squadron! Starting 7:00 PM @ UTC-5 (US EST) on Thursday, December 13th, and every Thursday thereafter, all interested pilots will be able to join in everything from free-for-all dog-fights to team PVP and co-op missions. This is designed to be for players of all skill levels, an excuse to sharpen up our flying skills and get together as a community. The game, FreeSpace 2, is only a $6 download, so why not join us? We will most likely have voice comms up for the 13th, and this wiki page has been set up for those who want more information. We have had about a dozen people express interest so far, and several of us have already been trading blows in game. This is looking like it has the potential to be one hell of a party. So grab your joystick, get in the cockpit, and let's shoot something already! TLDR: Wanna shoot things with fellow Citizens? CLICK HERE for more info! EDIT: To clarify, the FS2 multiplayer is now only available with FreeSpace Open, an open source extension of the original FreeSpace 2 game. if you do not own Freespace 2, you will need to spend $6 on the game, then install the free FreeSpace Open patch. Pnuts
So I can get it there free and still play with everyone? Since I was also interested in this and I need to get my practice on, here is the info I found. Per the installer wiki, you need Freespace 2 in order to install Freespace 2 Open per the installer page: http://www.hard-ligh..._Open_Installer So, you can buy Freespace 2 here at one of these places:9.99 at http://www.gog.com/g...ard/freespace_25.99 at http://www.desura.co...mes/freespace-2 Since I have a gog account and never heard of desura, I purchased it from gog. Freespace 2 Open also recommends gog, winwin. It looks like you need Freespace 2 open to use any of the mods (can't confirm yet, still downloading installer from gog). I'll update again once I get further along. Edit: Got FS2 and FS2 Open installed over it. FS2 Open is required to play online, so no matter what your buying FS2 and following the instructions to install Open over it. Both the wiki page he linked or the instruction on the Open page work/are the same. Late night now, gonna go to bed, I'll play with it more tomorrow. drogan
I should be able to join you guys since I don't have classes anymore then for a few weeks, will need to download freespace 2 first and test it out
Grue
@Maverick if you are a fan, we'd love to have some European players join us to expand the game night. Personally I'd be happy to see flight night run from mid-afternoon to midnight. All it takes is a few people from a few extra timezones to keep the party rocking. Let me know if you want to help get things rolling early!
Marshal Afghanicus
Desura, is actually a pretty cool piece of software. The Kickstarter game Legends of Eisenwald is running there beta through it and so far I think its very community driven.
Grue
Voice comms are confirmed for the 13th, and we're looking at minimum one full game for our pilots. However, more players means more explosions, so leave a reply here if you're interested and I'll keep you posted on any updates!

DuggeDank
Well I recently bought Freespace 2 and installed some kind of graphics and game expansion mod, but I got intimidated by all the damn controls when I fired it up so never played... Switch to next target, switch to previous target, switch to next friendly, switch to next hostile, switch to closest target, switch to last target fired upon, switch to satan and his grandma... I don't know, I have issues with too many buttons, I hope SC won't be like that... But, what I wanted to say: Maybe I could join you on this, would be good to learn how to fly at least a little before hitting the alpha dogfight, I am however also in Europe so the time will never work for me
Grue
We now have at least 4 or 5 European pilots who have said they'd be interested, so we may well be able to expand the time-frame on this. I personally would think it'd be great if we had things running half the day thursday, but that all depends on if we can get pilots logged in. I know I'm free all day that day so I'd be happy to fly with you all a little early. @DuggeDank You can be sure the SC will actually have more buttons. However, at least in FreeSpace, you really can get along without a lot of them. For example, I really only use 3 targeting buttons, target ship in reticle, target next item on escort list, and target nearest hostile, except for special circumstances. Either way, as you play through the main campaign they ease you into the extended controls with tutorials distributed throughout the game, so the learning curve isn't nearly as steep as you'd imagine. drogan
@DuggeDank I have the same problem with most space sims, there's just so many buttons and I can't remember ( or don't use) half of them, I hope this will become easier if I get a joystick to play it with
Talinko Montaro
hey Sinh, if you want, you could play all day long with your Australia mates ^^ no more seriously, 7 by you means 10am by me, could come if I'm not working (but I don't have any joystick) I'll perhaps join in the future but I won't have any thursday free till at least january, so it will be without me :/
Grue
@Talinko Well we tried our first intercontinental game yesterday and had playable ping between the US and Europe, so hopefully we'll get to join you some time. I for one will likely be playing on the weekend as well, and I set up an official steam group so that people can get in on some multiplayer action between Thursdays. Mythrim spotted me playing last night and we made some lovely explosions together. So, steam users, consider joining the group and registering Freespace with Steam. Maverick
A little late now, but you could have used the StarCitizenbase-Group that already exists => http://steamcommunity.com/groups/stciba
Grue
I am a member of that group myself, but this event is designed to be group/forum agnostic. Anyone of any skill or any squadron can come and fly with us. We're looking at as many as 3 full games now, and I'm really looking forward to it. If you haven't yet, post here so I can keep you informed, and come join the party!
Pnuts
How long do you anticipate it to go in, I won't be able to join until almost 4 hours after the start.
Grue
Unfortunately most people haven't told me their time-zones yet. I'm going to take a poll of everyone as they join comms to try to get an official list. I'm US EST, and I will probably be hanging around for 4-5 hours, excusing a break here or there for food, chatting with people, etc. That said, if we get many west coast/mountain time people, I could see it going on 6-8 hours. We certainly have the numbers, if only we get the variety of players.
jhwoody
This sounds pretty cool. I have to get downloading everything and dragging out all of my boxed up peripherals, but I should be able to get everything set up by the 13th. Man, haven't played Freespace in forever. Are the squads going to just be a pick up affair, or decided beforehand? Thanks!
Grue
@jhwoody We'd be happy to see you! The current plan is to keep things largely informal. I'll be trying to make sure that there is a co-op game and a dog-fighting game open as long as we have the players and interest for both. People will be free to open up new games whenever they finish a current one. Either turn on the join whenever setting or wait until they have more than a 1/2 full game. Grue
Voice comms are live! We have our own Mumble server. If you plan on joining us Thursday, please download and install Mumble, it's a free download and as simple as using Teamspeak or Ventrilo
Grue
Just over an hour until Flight Night! If you’ll be joining us, hopefully you managed to work through the setup guide I provided. I’ve had several of my Squad mates tell me setup was quick and easy, so I’m guessing most of you should be ready for tonight. Additionally, we’ll be doing most of our organization over the Mumble server. Even if you have no mic, there is a chat client that sends to the group in text-to-speech, so come listen in on Mumble so you don’t miss any of the action! Grue
We had a great run last week with 2 full wings of ships flying in co-op missions and dog fights. We've had several more I know IRL confirming they'll be there as well this time, so we should have some epic dog-fights for all who care to join! Please note: We've moved to privately hosted games using Mumble to organize, so please check the updated wiki for a simple guide to setup.
Grue
We still haven't missed a week, and we've had new faces every time. If you've been considering it, it would be great to have some new faces!
