Ships that will be useful in exploration

o7 Pilots and Explorers of the universe

Exploration in space games has always been a huge interest of mine and in Star Citizen it seems like it's going to be a large part of the game so I got wondering, which of the ships (That we know about right now) would work well either solo or as a squad when searching the void of space for riches.

Solo wise there seems to be some great candidates:

Freelancer

Seems to be a perfect, middle of the road/benchmark exploration ship with good cargo space and fuel reserves make it a great choice for solo pilots or two friends spending extended periods out in space to collect loot and return home for a nice profit.  Not to mention is has quite a wide range of weaponry able to be equipped that has the potential to fight off over confident pirates that may underestimate it.

Origin 315P

This ship looks like it is more of a entry level exploration ship or to be used in support of the Freelancer.  Claiming to have great sensors may mean it can better detect parts lost in the void of space than other ships and may be more set up for fending off or even escaping attackers at the cost of a much more limited cargo bay compared to the Freelancer and I presume has less effective range too.

Not everyone runs solo though, and for those of us who that may be looking at flying the larger ships or multiple ships together then I rekon these ships could make for great choices too:

Constellation

This could be a good 'Next step' ship after the Freelancer, being larger overall and needing more crew members to be as effective it comes with more cargo space, more weaponry, I presume better shielding and overall is a more threatening target to pirates than what the Freelancer would be but with the downside that it will be more expensive to buy and no doubt maintain.

Starfarer

Not an exploration ship of sorts but a fuel transport, although we know little about it the Starfarer could make for a great support ship for a few ships from the Origin 300 series in allowing the ships to refuel at the Starfarer to spend more extended periods searching the void while giving more tactical options for a small group.  Not only would two of three fighter class explorers be difficult to take out without losses but it would give people the option to split up and cover more space at a time before returning to the Starfarer and using it as a base ship of sorts.

Now all of this is just speculation based on information from the wiki and the RSI website and obviously is all subject to change but my own personal opinion is that these 4 ships could all make for great explorers and offer different oppertunities for different play styles.  Would love to know what you guys think either on my choices or your own.

I would go with either Freelancer or Connie for this. Do note that the connie has some firepower, but it also has great engines and is probably more meant to run away and scare off enemies than actaully engaging. :) Atleast that is my take on it.

I would lean towards the Freelancer or Connie as well. I have a Freelancer, with the primary purposed of using it for exploration, but I think the Connie would be very useful as well, especially if they release a Exploration variant of it.

Freelancer is the benchmark exploration ship, this is for sure.

Connie is merely a Freelancer + larger engine + larger guns + large space, and a higher price tag :sun:

so I'll go with Connie if the price tag is ok.

Why not with a Idris? You could do it. :P

Idris may be way too high profile for a simple exploration, it'll require a whole carriage of escort and supports.

However, I do plan to run some deep explorations with a battle group =)

But you don't lose anything with a LTI. :)

And if you want I explore with youa little bit. While the Beta trading could be buggy. So as long I have nothing to do... :P

I was considering putting the Idris in but it seemed that with it's relatively large crew requirements in comparison to the other ships may make it less effective in exploration.  It's hard to make an exact judgement since I still don't know too many details on what exactly will be found and how much money is actually in exploration but having to split the rewards between so many may make the benefit of having the intimidation, fire power and protection of the Idris not as worthwhile as say a Freelancer or Constallation.

However that being said on a big operation it could make for an incredible security/escort ship but again as we find out more information it may be that the Idris is as good as any of the others, maybe even more so.  Although you could argue having a large group of friends working together in one ship would also have benefits over the others

Define ''large''. :D

You just need 10 people to get the full power.

Fair point =P Although Im claiming these numbers to be large due to from what I can tell most of the stuff we come across is going to be focused around small - medium sized groups of people although that is just speculation on my part, knowing they intend to add a carrier which no doubt requires a lot of people to get its maximum efficiency.

10 people is including the docked ships and their pilots. Anyway, the thing is that you can go explore with an 350r, you can haul to some extent with the freelancer / connie and with an idris you can do anything listed, but you gotta have ppl with you. I will be sure to get my idris next to yours if you would, but i wouldnt recomend going out alone since it will take a month or two to get your insurance back on that ship.

Why not find a Bengal Carrier and explore with it?

Personally i'd go for a fast stealth-ish ship though, cover as much ground as safely as you can whilst recording down notable discoveries before bringing in the extraction guys.

At the moment I think I´ll go exploring with the Freelancer. But it kind of depends how the variants of the connie turn out and the effectivness of it when you have less than three crewmembers. It´ll be a close call overall.

You know I'm really considering adding the Idris after seeing it has the ability to carry 3 fighters,  I presume that includes the sub versions of the 300i so you can have those exploration versions to find stuff, bringing it back to the corvette.  That being said though I expect the Idris to be much less cost effective than the options I already talked about.

Another option may be the Retaliator. It is jump capable, has a decent size cargo, and has enough fire power to be the aggressor in a fight.

Personally, I will be using my Constellation for deep space exploration runs. I will have to rely on hired hands to man the turrets, but I think it will be the best for long runs. I am also wondering if having a 315p or the jump capable Aurora LX as a wingman might be worth it.

Although, I would consider flying a Constellation and a Freelancer as a team effort.

Idris can carry alot more tonnage so not sure about the cost efficiency. I guess that depends on the number of crewmen you have. Indeed, it can carry 300 series, auroras and hornets so far confirmed. :)

Hmmm for some odd reason I'm thinking the cutlass as well. I have come to see it as the bad boy brother of the freelancer and I don't want to discount it, in my own personal view, just yet :-)

Personally i like the cutlass better than the freelancer as well :)

The Cutlass looks to be fairly ok at the job it was meant to do - boarding ships & hauling cargo

Glad it's not just me then ! :-). I reckon it could, potentially, be very versatile according to the way it's set out. Then again that could be said for most ships as well

The cutlass seems useful but the Freelancer seems like it has better range. And thats key to exploring. Though i am heavily looking at the Caterpillar for some "Exploring" as well.
