in the current u.s. navy a carrier is still by far bigger than a destroyer. the modern destroyer (aegis) is only 365 feet long, with a crew of *redacted* people, carries awesome*redacted*, and 4 engines with the power output of *redacted* corvette engines combined. the connie would not be a destroyer class, frigate, or corvette.

How many times has this thread been necromanced by now? :P

The connie is a freighter/heavy fighter (since Hornets are light fighters)

In modern navy terms a connie would be a Patrol Boat, or in air terms a Gunship (as in AC-130 gunship). Depends on if you see these craft as air or navy allegories.

At any rate it is not a destroyer. Because destroyers are about twice as large as corvettes, and we know the Idris corvette is a whole lot bigger than Connie.

I think the terms are a bit fluid at the moment, especially with the air/navy analogy overlap. It's unclear what we are going to call the ships bigger than fighters but smaller than corvettes. Some of them are specialized and can be referred to as tankers, transports, strategic bombers, etc. But the generic middle of the road or dogfighting capable ships like the Connie has no real analogy.

I figure Gunship, Sloop, or perhaps Heavy Fighter (since the Hornet is classed as a light fighter) are the logical alternatives.

Hello everyone, I pledged for the Connie myself and I am going to build it for fighting, my view is that this ship is for long range strikes behind enemy lines because of the jump drive (hitting enemy supply convoys for instance), heavy support for fighter wings and search and rescue missions.

It could also function as a troop carrier for boarding parties from the looks of it.

If I have to make a comparison I would compare it to an A20 Havoc http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-20_Havoc

I am sure there will be many roles for the connie, and their assistance will be highly valued. I am sure at some points we are going to load them down with marines to do a wide nature of tomfoolery.

It still is, apart from all its other uses, a heavy explorer for me.

Now whether the Idiris will actually become the de facto heavy explorer is another matter.  I'll have to wait and see when I finally purchase one.

One thing that shouldn't be argued is that the roll of the ship can and should fill many niches.

Swiftsure is most correct, the Constellation is a cutter/patrol-class sized ship. Something you might see more as a Littoral or roadstead craft. And they can carry 1-2 aircraft, usually helicopters.

If you wanted some easier comparisons, the current SC fighters are equivalent to say, in WWII aircraft terms, the P-51, P-47, P-38, Fw-190, etc.....

The Connie is more like the P-61 Black Widow. Huge relative to the ones I listed, but still a fighter and pursuit craft, roles that a Cutter/Patrol ship can perform. Arm an A-26 to the teeth and you might have a connie-equivalent with the cargo capacity

Its 35 tons of cargo space does not really place it into the freighter level, even though that's what CIG/RSI is calling it - because Freighters do not tend to be well armed. Okay, Q-Ships aside, but they had a specific function during convoys. Perhaps you can consider the connie a Q-Ship, only flashier. I like the cutter-class (Like the USCG Hamilton).

I wouldn't suggest exploring with an idris without a healthy escort. they are a target that pirates want really bad. I would hate for you to lose it to some random sewer rat

All ships are targets. The bigger we are the more stuff we will have worth taking.

If you fly a piddly Aurora there will be a noob pirate in his skull and crossbones aurora who will come after you

If you fly a Connie there will be a pair of Cutlasses coming for you.

If you fly an Idris there will be a pirate bomber/boarder group coming for you.

If you fly a Capital Battlegroup there will be a pirate Warfleet coming for you.

There is no size fleet or group that won't have a corresponding size pirate group that will challenge it. That is the nature of PvP. Not to mention the NPC where we risk for example the Vanduul scaling their response to us.

Going smaller has both the benefits of stealth and instance matchmaking. CIG has said they don't want the game to outright favor size and number all the time.
