GO THE DISTANCE WITH THE LIBERATOR LIGHT CARRIER

From the Navy’s most ubiquitous fighters to massive warships and large-scale troop and vehicular transport, Anvil is synonymous with space combat and military operations, due in no small part to a laser-focus on the mission at hand. Anvil continues its tradition of excellence with the Liberator, an open-air vehicle carrier that applies the tradition of long-range transport to a smaller scale. Designed with the same quantum drive and long-distance capabilities of military-spec carriers and pathfinders but tailored to the civilian market, the Liberator puts your fleet on the front lines of any operation.

  • LANDING PADS

The Liberator easily accommodates three ships on its open-air landing pads, from light and medium fighters to mining and freight craft. The distinct double-deck configuration makes exceptional use of a relatively compact space, rendering take-offs and landings effortless. Fighters can therefore launch and help repel any attackers, should the Liberator come under assault during its journey. The interior bay is further capable of housing two ground vehicles, such as tanks and mining vehicles.

  • LONG RANGE

Equipped with a massive Size 3 quantum drive, the Liberator is built specifically for extreme-range deployment. Its ability to expeditiously transport smaller, short-range ships and vehicles to objectives between star systems makes it an invaluable asset for all manner of industrial, commercial, or combat operations.

    undefined

  • CARGO CAPACITY

A dedicated cargo hold sporting a generous 400 SCU capacity means you can haul traditional freight and tote supplies without sacrificing any vehicle space. This versatility makes the Liberator a favorite of UWC contractors, mining operators of every scale, and pilots and orgs looking to multi-task.

    undefined

  • WEAPONRY

Should the Liberator be placed in jeopardy, it is capable of defending itself without needing to scramble any fighters on deck. A manually operated turret sporting potent Size 5 laser repeaters, along with dual automated point defense turrets and four bespoke missile launchers, keep the Liberator and its passengers well protected.

  • AUTOMATED TURRETS

Dual Size 2 Point Defense Turrets are fully automated, capable of taking out incoming projectiles and errant space debris while you stay focused on the mission.
  • COCKPIT

The Liberator’s cockpit provides a clear view of all three landing pads, making sure your crew can keep an eye on their passengers while staying on course to their objective.
  • MISSILES

Four bespoke missile launchers complete the Liberator’s defensive suite, and are ready to vaporize any potential threats that manage to evade the guns.
  • DOCKING COLLAR

Dock at stations and other ships with ease, reliability, and the peace of mind that comes with renowned Anvil tech.
  • VEHICLE BAY

The interior bay accommodates two ground vehicles of any size, including exploratory rovers, battle tanks, and Anvil’s own Atlas Platform chassis.
  • MANUALLY OPERATED TURRET

Equipped with twin Size 5 laser repeaters, the Liberator’s main point of self-defense will ensure interlopers think twice before tangling with it.
  • LANDING PADS

Open-air landing pads accommodate up to three ships simultaneously, while the double-deck configuration facilitates effortless take-offs and landings.
  • CARGO HOLD

400 SCU of dedicated cargo space ensures you’ll never have to sacrifice vehicle space to pack adequate supplies or traditional freight.

Well - I've been telling myself I don't need anymore ships (since I have most of them already) but here goes CIG again..... I see this one as a Must Buy and highly utilized ship !!!

@VoA , when you get a moment can you remove the text formatting from the above post?  That post is impossible to read =-]

As a repair fan, I really look forward to the FAQ to answer how much you can repair and will it step on the toes of the Crucible.

Reminds me a lot of the Liberator from the Star Wars universe: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Liberator-class_cruiser

Vague similar shape, both are light fighter carriers and light troop carriers, and of course, the same name.

Yeah this is the pocket carrier everyone is asking for, except a bit more vulnerable than what people wanted I'm going to guess.  But I think it'll probably be a critical ship in staging military ops.  Don't think I'll be buying one with real money as I have a Polaris, Idris and Banu Merchantman already, all of which are carriers of some sort in their own right.

I've been going back and forth whether the Liberator would be better for my needs than the Polaris.  I mostly just want a ship with a hangar and lots of room that I can keep all my stuff with me.  While the Polaris has the enclosed hangar and garage and tons of amenities, it also needs a rather large crew to operate.  The Liberator has hangars (out in the open) with a garage AND cargo space with room for all my stuff while not requiring a large crew, but not as many amenities.

Long run, I'm still leaning towards my Polaris...

Tricky question as both fulfill different roles. The Liberator is a Pocket very Light Carrier and basically a miniature version of the Kraken (minus the firepower) while the Polaris is pretty much a multi-purpose Light Frigate in everything except name; but I expect that to change once it's flightready. Then CIG will likely reclassify the Polaris as a Light Frigate and then move the Perseus up to Corvette-class as that's what it already is and this whole Gunship thing reminds me of the Hammerhead. :)

So yeah, I was interested in the Liberator as I like corvette-sized ships but I don't really have a use for it and its lack of defensive firepower also gives me pause. It only has a single manned turret with 2xS5 guns, some missiles, and 2 single S2 automated point defense guns. It's as if CIG already 'balanced' it around requiring at least the top two spots for fighters on-call. To me that's a real shame as I personally think the ship should have been given at least 2 manned 2xS5 turrets, the missiles, and then 2 or 3 2xS2 automated point defense turrets. It's defensive loadout is extremely anemic from my perspective; even compared to non-combat ships like the Starfarer Gemini and the Reclaimer. Even the Hercules M2 has more firepower I believe.

So unlike the Kraken which could be used as a mobile base for mining operations while still having more than enough firepower to give any pirate gang pause; that pirate gang won't be stopped by a single twin-S5 turret if you take a Liberator with Prospectors and ROCs on a mining expedition. You'd need fighter escorts.

Now ofcourse there's also the price difference between the Liberator and Kraken but still...

Then again, this is the pocket carrier that people have been asking CIG about for years so I hope they are happy. For me it's in an awkward spot and I think I will have to give it a pass for now; unless CIG suddenly comes out with a discounted Warbond CCU during IAE next month or FleetWeek next year. :P

So yeah, personally I would keep that Polaris as I'm confident that the Polaris will allow you to use it for several roles while the Liberator is effectively another one-trick pony. I'm definitely keeping my Polaris. ;)

Personnally i don't see this ship as a light carrier at all. A light carrier should be able to defend itself and carry at least a fighter squadron (let's say 4 or 5 full size fighters ships).

The Liberator is absolutely not a ship carrier IMO.

Even if the devs said that it will be the entry ship for ship-transport carreer, that doesn't mean that the Liberator can be considered as a light carrier. Sure it will be able to carry some ships but we can also state the same thing for the Hercules or the Idris. Can we consider those ships light carrier ? Not really sure 🙂 (and it is worth mentionning that the idris is more suitable to be called "light carrier" since it can defend itself and carry 3 full size fighters versus only 2 for Liberator 🤣)

The ANVIL Liberator is mainly a futuristic landing craft, just like the US currently have :

Spoiler

Navy LCAC to land on Ocean Beach as part of Fleet Week ...

Small defensive armament (TOP focused), can transport a large number of vehicles and is used primarly to deploy quicly a huge landing force. This ship will require a fighter escort to achieve the mission as it lack defensive capabilities.

You might say that it is also the purpose of the Hercules M2 but the M2 is actually a bit different. It is almost like a C5 galaxy which role is to deploy stuff on the rearlines but not directly in combat.

Spoiler

Huge US Transport Aircraft C-5 Galaxy Swallowing M109A6 ...

The Hercules M2 will probably have a more strategic role because it will be able to travel long distances and defend itself a bit where as the Liberator will probably have a more tactical role because it will need to be part of a larger group.

I can easily see a landing force made of some Liberators and Valkyries to deploy troops and vehicles on planet, with some M2 deploying Ballista and cargo on the rear to fortify things and resupply.

The liberator have the ability to carry 2 full size fighters but I assume that it is mainly in order to escort it down the planet, which will prove to be really important with large systems like Pyro where fuel autonomy will actually be a thing for small ships.

But yeah, long story short, we will be able to use the Lib as a small ferry for ships even if it is not our dreams' light carrier I guess 😅

As a dropship pilot, I already love the Liberator but I am still waiting for a true dedicated light carrier. The only carrier that we have in the pipes so far are the Kraken, the Pegasus and the Bengal and those are really big

+1 for Morse, Liberator may need a light crew, but in order to fly safely you will need your fighters to cover you...
So that means that your fighters cannot be deployed at the benefit of others ships, they will be stuck with you to assure your escort.
We may see the traditionnal size expansion during the production of this ship, but the actual intentions of the designers seems to keep it as a simple support role as we can't see any radar system on the pictures : it is not designed as a C² ship able to take command of a task force.

So basically, this ship is mainly conceived as a flying backpack for others ships.

For the record, during WW2 an escort carrier, was a former Cruiser converted with a flatop, its fighter wing was between 16 and 30 aircrafts.
Its main role was to launch patrol aircrafts around a convoy to detect and engage submarines and long range naval bombers.

So here with half a dozen fighters, it may seems a little bit weak, but it all come down to the number of fighters you want to cover your operation :
For a small mining OPS half a dozen fighter may be enough :)

But as we saw in the theorycrafting excercise, this ship can also be used as a flying gas station for a small fleet of fighters (like a dozen of Vanguards) : you are not limited to the size of your landing pads. Suffice to say that your light fighters will refuel in turns.

Now imagine an industrial operation, you do not want to involve costly ships, so you may be interested by posting 1 or 2 liberators around your Orion or refining ship ...
Your fighters will have 2 refuelling platform for the whole duration of the industrial operation.

What sort of capabilities will this ship have for refueling, repairing, and rearming the ships and vehicles it carries? (I believe there were fuel tanks shown in concept art.)

The Liberator will only support basic levels of refueling, repairing, and rearming, which will be done manually by players onboard using supplies stored in the cargo bay. It does not have dedicated facilities or separate stores.

Weak.

Yeah, the Q&A kinda confirm that this ship is not a light carrier at all. Can't hold a fight alone, not a capital ship, can't refueld, rearm and repair as a carrier would...

Quote

What is the primary usage difference between this and the M2?

The big differentiator is the M2 is not designed specifically to carry spaceships, let alone multiple spaceships, which is the Liberator’s key role.

And as expected, it is basically an M2 that will require an escort.

That's probably why there are 2 XS pads, so that it can carry 2 dedicated escort fighters.

Even if the Liberator is said to have a crew of 2, it will probably require a crew of 4 (2 for the Liberator and 2 pilots for the fighters).

So the M2 should be a better cargo hauler for everyday trading with a crew requirement of 3 and no need of escort fighters.

However I think that it might be worth to take the Liberator over the M2 due to the fact that it can carry 400 SCU + vehicles at the same time compared to the M2 where you can't carry both at the same time. All you need is just one more crew member to pilot a fighter I guess or rent an NPC to man the top turret

If the Q&A confirmed anything it's that the Liberator is a small ship and ground vehicle transport ship, not a carrier (nor a capital) with a few amenities.  Although you can, it's not designed to launch ships from its decks all the time and instead transport them from point A to point B.
