The storage and potential income from data running (eventually) is really nice from the MSR BUT, the style and large SCU storage of the Railen is looking really enticing, not to mention the LTI.

Having trouble deciding on if melting the MSR and going with the Railen is a good call.

EDIT: Disregard. I'm dumb and forgot it's Warbond for LTI which makes it a little less appealing now.

Personally I wouldn't do it. To me the Railen is just an alien cargo ship with lots of overengineered moving parts. During the recent Q&A the devs also stated that all those triangle shaped containers are part of the ship. So you'd have to put square boxes into a triangle space. Not very efficient. I'd rather pay $25 more and get the Hull-C instead.

Now if you're into alien ships and really want it go right ahead but as you already indicated the only version of the Railen with LTI is the cash-only Warbond; so you'd need an LTI token to CCU up to a Railen instead.

Now you could get a $5 Terrapin-to-Railen and sit on that for the time being. Maybe CIG will release a cheap new ship or vehicle (like when they released the Cyclone-MT). That way you can get an inexpensive LTI-token and then just upgrade it. Heck, during the Anniversary sale you might be able to get several discounted Warbond CCUs and chain them together. Then you might even be able to get your Railen at a much lower price if you're lucky.

I've made some CCU-chains in the past by using those discounted Warbond CCUs which allowed me to get a Vanguard Harbinger for only $145 instead of having to pay the full $290 for it. :)

I had thought to eliminate my Nomad or maybe even the Hull B for a Railen, but for the money it would cost it seemed less than a bargain.

Then I remembered my alien fighter.

I have a Khartu-al for no reason I can remember other than the cool factor, especially since I am Trade/Industry not Combat.

SO, I imagine the cool factor wore off (and it was quite expensive at the time).

I upgraded to the Railen for 55 buck and maintained the LTI from the Khartu-al. (melting a LTI ship for credits is never a good idea since you can always upgrade it into something else, as done here).

More than a cool factor this time – it has some serious weapons for a mere cargo hauler and is rated for long hauls.

Only pause was the 4 man crew, but that will resolve itself, plus it was stated you could blade the guns to the pilot in need. - DRUM out

Yeah I decided against it due to the lack of LTI (warbond). The MSR has (or at least WILL have) a lot more utility so I can't justify a melt or upgrade at this point. I did however go full dumb dumb and get my hands on a Vulture with LTI (Used a Freelancer Dur token I had sitting around) because last I looked at the roadmap, Salvage was on the table for 3.17. Now however....it's been pushed off. Live and learn.

Yeah, I personally would keep that Mercury Star Runner. It's one of my favorite ships and I wouldn't melt it for the world (although I hope CIG will give it that second entry as well as some escape pods). It may carry less regular cargo but it does offer other opportunities (data running) that the Railen can't offer. Alternatively the Mercury can carry several mining vehicles in its cargohold so if you want to go on a mining expedition that's also an option for the Mercury but not the Railen as you're limited to always having those triangular containers locked to the hull. So the Railen is just a fancy alien ship that won't ever be anything else than a cargo ship with inconveniently shaped containers and awkward means of transferring that cargo.

However, I would suggest getting a $5 Terrapin-to-Railen CCU and keeping it in your account if you have some leftover store credit. $5 won't break the bank and if you at some point decide that you still want one the option will remain available to you in getting a Railen at the original price. Heck, once the Railen is released and gets its flightready price increase you may even be able to give yourself a discount to some other ship if you suddenly decide to go that route. For me I'm always looking for ways to give myself discounts so I'm always collecting inexpensive CCUs of concept ships as well as discounted Warbond CCUs. That way I can chain them together for massive discounts. As stated above this got me a Harbinger for just $145 and other ships that I could get at way below their original price. ;)

As to the Vulture I wouldn't say it's a bad decision to get one now as you still get a loaner in the meantime. Sure; Salvage v0 was pushed off the roadmap again but one day it will be here. I also have a Vulture (I CCUd one of my other ships to one right away during the concept sale) and am eagerly anticipating its release. It's the perfect little career starter just like the Prospector was for mining in my opinion. Similar premise and similar interior accomodations. Perfect to get your feet wet once CIG gets everything ready for salvage and seeds the universe with stuff for you to find and take apart. :D

I JUST looked at the roadmap and Salvage T0 is back on 3.16 lol Maybe I missed it? I dunno. I'm pretty excited for salvage. Something different than mining. Haven't dipped my toe into cargo running at all yet.

Cargo running is pretty dead atm due to the random 30k which causes you to lose everything if you encounter it while in transit. It looks like bountyhunting missions are currently the go-to in terms of making money. :)

Here's hoping that CIG can find out why these 30k's are happening and how to prevent them.

Also nice to see that Salvage v0 is back on the roadmap and scheduled for a3.16 now. Here's hoping it won't get pushed off again. :P

Awww bummer. 😕 I was about to dip my toe in with my MSR. GOD I hope salvage makes it in by then. My brain is numb from mining. lol Hur L3->Cru L1->Hur L3->Cru L1->Hur L3->Cru L1.....

Well, you can always give it a try and hope that the server won't get hit by a random 30k. However, it is best not to put your entire savings into a shipment as there is the chance you might lose it suddenly due to a random server crash. ;)

I would keep the MSR if I had to choose between the two.

But I did get a CCU for the Railen from another LTI ship.
