Existing Elite player- considering backing

Recommended Posts

I've been playing Elite in VR since it was free on Epic and though love its feel and concept, I don't love its raw gameplay.

The more I look at Star Citizen, the more I realize it is the game I want (except for the FPS aspect, though it may as well exist if I'm a person), however half of the stuff that excites me is turning out to be years away! I know VR isn't supported (vorpx maybe?) but my GPU couldn't do it yet anyway. Would be perfect for it...

What I am mostly looking for is a having fun with complex flight/space mechanics in a world that is designed to feel like...a world. Not a game. I dislike common tropes of enemies that are just fodder, or scale to you for no reason mentioned...

Elite's flight itself is good enough (some frustrating senselessness but is still fun) but the fighting is quite spoon fed. Quest targets just come at you, or there's bad guys at mining spots... There's almost never more risk than you accept to take. Dying costs pennies..

And I like to do 'ship stuff'. A space ship should feel complex with many functions. Elite often makes me feel like I'm in a sweet looking bi-plane with era appropriate radar -_-

I'm hoping to feel immersed with a few engaging space things to do, ideally with an overarching endless goal to work at (greater and greater guild/npc organization expansion, etc.) or constant challenge, which elite has none. I have enough money to buy any ship in 1 month already; nothing else I can do effects anything.

Orr.. at least if the world is still game-y, I might even be happy grinding to just own all the ships I think are cool if there's a fun reason to fly them, ideally with varying degress of risk/reward, other than just fighting or A to B style crap. Mining always seems to be stationary shooting.
I enjoy the idea of playing with other people, but I have weird hours I can play stuff so.. that doesn't add in to my choice.
TL;DR: I want to do immersive space stuff, not just shoot stuff/ deliver "commodities".

-Can you do anything in those cool looking ship interiors while travelling other than.. look at it? If there's going to be travel time may as well pass it with like.. some FPS combat simulations or target practice in a cargo bay. Laser tag or something, could be fun PvP aspect. Or just a game you can play on mobiglass .. Or a 'repair stuff' mini-game for some small side credits.
-Is the backing fee ever on sale?

Hello, welcome to this forum, it seems that you came at right place in the right time :

The actual flight mechanics while they are not totally mature have a great depth that hide below the surface gameplay.
It seems that in the release of the PU we will have at least 3 endless goals :

  • For Exploration players, find new jump point and cartography the fringe of space and help find new traderoute between star systems.
  • For combat player repeal the Vanduul and retake the sectors lost by humanity in the last centuries (you can find theorycrafting about this goal under the code name "Operation Pitchfork")
  • For trade players : there is the "Synthworld project" to create a planet from aggregation of an asteroid belt.

And in the middle of that it seems that we will have the colonization / housing mechanism (the killing feature of this game if you want my humble opinion).

Actually in terms of organized gameplay we have the mining event that see the 3 operationnal division of Imperium working together :

  • Trade and Industry division mine, transport, refine and sell the materials.
  • Exploration division scan and fin ore deposit to ensure that the miners are constantly at work with no ore starvation.
  • Combat division ensures the security of the operation and the screening at refinery to avoid embush by pirate players.

And now we are jumping into the Xenothreat mission, that is more scripted but provide us with a good opportunity to take advantage of our organization and massive presence (last night we had 25 players splitted between 15 ships at the wreck site).

The activity during travel may vary : depending vastly on your mission and duration of the travel.
As the action phase in this game are very intense and don't forgive any error, I usually use short travel to take a break and cool down from the previous action.
For longer travel, you can take the time to setup your gear (weapons, vehicule loadout ... ) and coordinate for the futur action. And trust me, when you are in a squad of a dozen players, the  5mn of travel is a very short preparation time.

When we are soloing, we can take a look at the mission board, or give advice to new players asking for help.

During this year we will see the implementation of a first iteration of the engineer mechanism, with physicalisation of ship subsystems within the ship (power plant, shield generator, cooler, CPU blades, ...) and those susbsystem will take damage and will experience wear and tears (especially if you decide to overclock them). So any pause in the action will be put at profit to check those subsystem components and replace them if the need arise.

You will also have a more advanced medical gameplay, with the possibility to cure desease and wound in a medical post within the ship (i.e. for the carrack).

I also can't wait to have the physicalisation of the ship cattering to take a drink and a good meal without the need to return to a station's foodcourt.

For the bigger ship (like the Javelin if I remember well), they have implemented a baskeball court with physicalisation of the ball...
I also  can't wait to play a mini game of billard in the 600i or in the Carrack between mission ;)

Regarding the pledge, you can find them at this adress :
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge

You have to understand that you can have 3 kind of "purchasse" :

  • Item or ship alone, that don't give you access to the Multiplayer (Public Universe)
  • Package that include a ship, a few item and access to the Multiplayer (Public Universe)
  • Package that include access to the future solo campaign (Squadron 42)

So be carefull when selecting the pledge and ensure that the selected package include access to the Public Universe.

Thanks for the response, it is quite detailed.  Sounds like there is more coming that would add to what I'm looking for in gameplay.  I like the idea of a reason to constantly battle (reclaim territory) other than gain wealth/grind materials.  But that sounds quite distant  :(

I see that ship components have company branding which is cool and makes sense.  I love customizing ships in ways you can notice (faster/ rickety etc), having physicalised components is cool if there's a logical mechanic to them.

Solo missions is mostly what I'm limited to.  Is there much diversity to them?

So no sales?

There is actually a sale active but dedicated to combat ship, here is the link :
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/17930-Gear-Up#skus

Regarding diversity, the number of archetype is around 10 to 12.

Box deliverey mission : the most simple kind of mission, it takes around 8 mn to complete
Missing client : find a people traped in cave, so it is an exploration mission that take around 40mn to complete.
Missing crew : retrieve the body of the crew of a ship lost in space, or on ground : this take around 12 mn to complete
Remove sentry : detect and destroy 3 spying device around a com relay, that take around 5mn to complete
Remove claimjumper : destroy 9 turrets in an asteroid field, that take around 10 mn to complete
Remove illegal occupant : go on a ground site, destroy 2 or 3 AAA gun, shot down a bunch of pirate inside the bunker, that take around 20mn to complete
Retrieve a prototype CPU blade : go on a satelitte crash site, extract a specific CPU blade, go on a bunker, clear the pirates inside the bunker and hack the CPU blade, thate take around 20 mn
Get back a cargo, go on a crash site, dispatch the pirates, grab the cargo and get it to a delivery point, that take around 15mn
Assassination, go on a specific location and destroy a specific ship, that take around 5mn
Bounty hunting mission, kill 3 specific pirates, escorted each by 4 support ships, that take around 15mn to complete, and it scale up in 5 differents level of difficulty (up to a capital ship, but it's kind difficult to solo).

Hacking mission, go on a bunker, kill all occupant, hack a computer, protect it during the hacking time from ennemy reinforcment, it take around 20 mn to complete.

... There are a few other archetypes, but I don't think I'm missing so much of them.

Then you have the mission givers that will have a quest line to propose you, those quest line are a variation of thoses mission archetype : each quest line is composed of 5 to xxx missions, and you have a little background and flavour added by the dialogues :)
Completing all the quest line may represent around 40 hours of gameplay, but I never bothered to perform all of them, as solo-ing in FPS is quite hard with all of that desynch around ... and if I find a wreck full of ennemy I won't get there in FPS, I would rather take back a retaliator and nuke the wreck to ashes with torpedoes ... (never call me for a rescue mission ^^).

If you're on the fence on whether or not to back and give the "game" a go, there are occasional Free Fly events where anyone can try SC for free. It's a great opportunity to get in, fly some ships and all around get a feel for what the "game" has to offer at that point in time. Gives you a chance to seriously consider backing.

EDIT: @clone63 As an addition, if you buy a cheap package to get into the Verse, I'm sure there are plenty of us who would be more than willing to let you test fly some ships.

Definitely try any of the freefly events or the Event in Nov (Anniversary sale, also multiple ships are on flee fly at this time)

This game is worth backing, but understand it will not be here in a completed form till a few (few may be a loose interpretation  :P) years out.  That said there are still many playable aspects today...some buggy ....some very playable, the game is in a very playable state for an alpha.  Yet....it feels like..there needs to be more actual gameplay flushed out.

There are very few price reductions, although there are some "sales" where the entry packages are lowered in price by maybe $20-30 (I don't even know if it is that big).  Usually also happens around end of year.

"Sales" to CIG are more about creating the illusion of "limited stock"  so yes they play quite a few marketing games.  Please read this line again as it bothers a lot of people.

It may bother you if you put too much money in, but my advice to you, is keep your investment in it low on the money side, and put more time into the game.  This is what I would tell any IRL friend who would ask me about the game today.

I was informed that there is an issue with account recovery with original email and billing information. Is there anything a buyer can do to protect himself?

Is it possible to buy just the DLC code that can be added to my own existing Elite account?

      Cheers.
