Mining / Scrapping

Hey all, long time backer and not so avid follower of Star Citizen, and i just wanted to see if somestuff is in the game or known to become part of the game:

1. Can you modify any ship, such as the Aurora CL or other freighter/cargo ship to have a mining laser+tracter beam for mining operations? Or is it just the ships in the "mining" category

2.As a supporting player that is terrible in combat, I had envisioned  helping my guild after piracy/dog fighting as a scavenger in the wreckage. Is this going to be a niche thing, and is there a ship already for this?

1) dont know, but it will be nice

2) Yes there is the big ship for industrial operations and I heard that there wil be a starter ship for that...

And with the component system you could retrieve avionic components by yourself sneacking within the wreckage ... as it was showcased during the demo of citizen con with the satelite's prototype board ☺

I would say it MIGHT (never say never with SC) be possible, but don't count on it. The main reason being that for an operation like mining, ships with specialised powerplants, ship systems, components, structural durability, and shielding will be required. Although, we might see "handheld" mining tools to you - but this is likely to be incredibly inefficient.

It will probably be something used, particularly if things go down. At the moment we have the Reclaimer (largest currently flight-ready ship) for salvage, as well as the Drake Vulture (freelance sized). Keep in mind though, it is likely in these cases we would need people to man turrets too. Just don't get cocky :P

Thanks mate. Makes sense, no point in designing a specific class of ship if everyone could just make their own little guy ship into pure utility.

Odds are if you can't afford to get a dedicated mining ship in the game after release, people will be in the verse loaning ships for rentals. It makes sense for the mechanic to exist, as it does in the real world.

Not just that, but you can also rent ships from NPCs, as was showcased in the live demo.  There is a shop dedicated to renting ships instead of buying them.

Would that be for UEC and only for like 2 hours or some amount of time per rent then?

Details are not quite fully determined, but that is the idea.  You will use in-game UEC to rent the ship for either specified periods of time, like two hours; or you will rent it out at a rate per hour and owe (and pay) as you use it, for example, like 400UEC/hour.  There will be late fees, maintenance fees, damage fees, etc.  But it will still be much cheaper than buying your own.  And I am sure these rental ships will be base versions of their model line-up.

I can see renting a Hull-B and earning some transport money to gain profit in the early game.

Do you happen to have a place where i can read up more on all this kinda of stuff? I hate to just ask the same questions that hundreds of others have

A lot of us just love talking about this game; so ask away!  We all know there are new people still joining Star Citizen.  I have been a backer for over four years now; following the project since mid-2013, officially backing since June 2014; and I am happy to answer questions. :)

However, a good source of the information a lot of us have is in two places.  First, I recommend going to the main site RobertsSpaceIndustries.com and reading all of the posted articles they have there.  There are a lot of good ones, where the developers share their mindset for most game mechanics and how they are approaching them.  I cannot post links now as I am at work, but I will update this post once I get home.  The second source is the hundreds of hours of videos on the Star citizen YouTube channel.  I highly recommend the "10 for the Chairman" series and all of the "Around the 'Verse" series videos.  You will be there for weeks, lol.  At least those two series will give you a majority of the information available over the last few years.
