Well, guess I'll start by saying that I JUST NOW got the urge to actually involve myself with the Star Citizen community. I have been looking at this game from a distance for a few years now, but I guess this game is actually a serious thing. Hoping to learn as much as I can about how the game would work before any actual release, as well as getting to know some of the groups playing~

With the 3.0 update around the corner, you couldn't have picked a better time!  That update will change a lot of mechanics, so you won't be that far from experienced players as you think.

Until then, you have plenty of time to read up on the lore, watch some previous Around The Verse episodes (which summarise latest development) and subscribe to some good SC youtubers.

Edit: If you decide to go ahead and buy a package, which will give you access to the game, make sure you sign up with a referral code because it will give you 5 dollars of store credit.  Also, there's an ongoing discount promotion for the Aurora package if you enter "NEWBEGINNINGS" at checkout (there are quite a few discounts over the year).

Thanks, and this is some great news! The game already sounds complex, so I'm glad I won't be horribly behind everyone else with the major learning curve. Do you recommend starting the guide reading process now, or waiting until 3.0?

I'd recommend reading and following up from now, there's quite a lot of material that covers lore, star systems and even an entire language.

For starters, I'd recommend this fan-made guide... sure its a bit outdated (specifically ship stats), but it gives you a rough idea of the lore, star systems and what each ship does:

The other recommendation is to hold off until 3.0 update so you aren't spoiled by the mechanics in 2.6 because 3.0 will implement changes across the board.  Don't worry if you think you won't make this ongoing discount, there will be more discount promotions along the way, such as the one during anniversary stream.
