Idris P or keep Polaris

What you want to do is a very important question lol I would say keep them. You'll have a better time finding someone with an Idris who wouldn't mind sharing verses having your own Idris and then looking for crew members. And we have plenty of Idri' here, some people even have two if you've ever considered renting or get permission to use one from another member here :)

With all that said, I'll think I'll keep my Polaris 😁.

Good choice, while it is tempting to get the Idris for its increased firepower and increased carrier capacity, the operating costs are usually overlooked.  The Polaris consumes less fuel, requires fewer (NPC) crew and can still carry 1 fighter while still packing a punch.

I dunno what the M's STS gun is capable of, but the Polaris has bigger firepower than an Idris. The torpedoes alone from one Polaris would be decimating to a frigate. Idris is a beauty tho!

I think its more of a difference in DPS.  The Polaris is great for hit 'n' run attacks or at least dishing out an overwhelming amount of damage that cripples the opponent ship before they have a chance to respond (or in the case of the Idris, to align their railgun to hit you).  Otoh the Idris would do well in a prolonged battle of attrition, where it has a chance to use its STS gun and deploy its fighters.

I ended up giving up my Idris a while back and got a Polaris instead.  It all boiled down to how often I thought I would use the ship.  My concern was that because of the amount of money "invested" into the ship, I would be reluctant to take it out unless I had a reasonable chance of bringing it back intact.  That would mean crew (humans & NPCs) as well as equipping the ship.    Then, there was the concern that I would have 'wasted' that money on a ship that I rarely take out.  So, I got rid of the Idris and got a bunch of smaller ships that were easier on the crew/equipment fronts and I would be more willing to risk loosing.

In the end though, I think each person has to make their own decision based on how they see themselves playing. If you are really into SAR, you could get a Hope Class Endeavor and 2x Cutlass RED and still have quite a bit left over to get some escort ships.

Idris...Polaris...it is not about DPS. It is about the work vs fun. Will it take more work to crew to make it effective for what you want? Will it take more time to earn creds for NPCs? Upkeep?

I will say...I know people who will jump up and down to crew an Idris. I cant say the same for a Polaris. I kind of treat my Idris as an apartment building for parties...and people  want to fight for the MC position. It is like the location does the work for you.

Let's not forget that Polaris can repair, rearm, refuel fighters/bombers (basically Sabre or smaller) and possibly other mid-sized ships like Cutlass/Freelancer.

It also has medical facilities onboard so it won't be just combat focused but it'll provide decent support.

It'll also require less people to be fully effective compared to Idris.

Just my 2cents

For the longest time, I wanted the Idris -P. It has more cargo capacity than the M and is slightly more versatile. I have since purchased the Polaris.

Personally, I think a flight of Polaris (3 or 4 ships) running strike missions, armed with one Anvil Hurricane each (if they can fit), would be a crippling force! Hit and run, coupled with harassing fire tactics, could prove to be very effective.

Let me not forget to mention, 7 volleys of size 10 torpedos! Most other fleets would quiver at the thought of a prolonged fight against that kind of force!

If some of the target ships were smaller, then definitely Hurricanes would be the ideal choice for hit and run attacks, but if the target is above their hitting range (e.g. a lone Javelin), then I suggest that the Polarii store fighters like Hornets to protect the rear from bombers.

a lone javelin? Still has enough to swat you flies. Personally, I'd never leave my Javelin or Idris alone.

One thing, the loading rate is probably going to be longer than what you thought. On the retaliator they are already loaded just need to be extended down. It is not where you fire off everything and be gone in less than 60 seconds. Which it is not designed for, 3x large shields, not capital shields. Even 3 polarii(?) Vs 1 Idris, 1-2 Polarii(?) were expected to be destroyed. However, in any non-cap match, the Polaris  should have it. The Polaris is a Striker (attacker), they hit hard and GTFO. Hense the speed, however, with torpedo locking on takes "forever" each time, can only fire one volley against other cap ships and jump out.

However, this isn't a real world, just theory crafting also, Idris will cost you alot more in the long run as you have a long more npcs, ammo and at least 3 craft.

I should've clarified.  What I meant by a lone Javelin was the ship and a full hangar... and ofc if the Polarii stay there to shoot more than 1 volley of torps they will be worn down by the combined firepower of the Javelin and its hangar compliment.  But as an advance strike force, they can be pretty effective e.g. by having all 3 of them concentrate their fire at the engines to slow it down and then jump out, leaving the damaged ship at the mercy of the main attacking force.

But if an enemy does? Then it would be the ultimate opportunity to take it down (or capture it).  Its only a matter of time before we see a lone Javelin or Idris in the game (maybe a remnant of an attacked fleet or something).  Otherwise yeah, 99% of the time they'll be protected by other ships, which would make the job of attacking them a lot harder and riskier.

Well, I do know for a fact. The first week of "just taking it out for a test drive" with zero ship weapons won't be so good and the pirates will have a nice shiney fleet of javelins :D, of course they need to  kill the drive which will be protected by ships default shields system (capital shield system).

However, I was saying that even though a Javelin is alone. It would have to be a small fleet larger than fighters (more DPS). Javelin weapons excluding her 2 STS Turrets (top and bottom) are quite deadily for fighters.

Tbh I can't wait until we can fly Idris or the Polaris, years off considering it's not supposed to enter in to anything anytime soon 2018/19 at the earliest :(. The Idris, I'm optimistic 3.* with instancing and I'm sure the work on the last room has been done and the animation and final pieces are been done. I one both :D  I have barely anything to call a social life now :D.

Even though I'm a trade and industry person, I'd still would like to go on a Polaris, Idris, Javelin and bigger ships and get an idea of their running costs, repair requirements etc.
