Hey all

Need some recommendations for a good 4X space game if anyone has any.

I have a few criteria:

Must Haves:

  • Space related
  • Available on steam
  • Real time (i.e NOT turn based)
  • Relatively 3D (i.e no top down / stuck view)

Optional:

  • Relatively new 2-3 years
  • Relatively pretty looking game

Ive got Sins of a Solar Empire, Stellaris, Galactic Civ 3. And out of all of those i like sins the most with stellaris being a close 2nd.

If you like space games, you should try Sword of the Stars I ( cheap on steam): while it is turn based ( outside of battles), it has a very nice take on research and the battles are the best ever in a space game ( except the sequel which has some bad issues on the empire management side and I wouldn't recommand unless you love the first), there are plenty of mods on the developer forums too.

Aboout your requirements, try Star Drive 2, quite fun and more complex than it seems.

Edit: Lol i didn't read before posting...

You could always try the different mods for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion (Halo, BSG, StarTrek, etc.)

http://www.moddb.com/mods/halo-sins-of-the-prophets <==The mod i kill the most time in.

The criteria you have is as strict and pretty much the same as what i look for in my 4x strategy games and unfortunately, as a result, there are very few good newer games in that range out there.

I still play Sword of the Stars 1. (Not the second). The Sword of the Stars complete collection is available on Steam for $9.99 as a standard price point. This game has been my personal gold standard, and I really haven't found one I loved since. At the time I purchased it, I almost did not ...because the art on the box was so quirky.  The art in the game is pretty good, with all species having completely different hull sections, space stations and star drive technologies.  It means that strategies that work for one race may not work with others, and leads to a lot of replay potential.

Life is Feudal: Forest Village

Is there any combat in this? watching people play it don't seem like it does? Looks very interesting tho.... will probably get it on sale

There is currently no combat, and since the game is in"early relase", and not yet finished ( though very enjoyable), I can not say what the road map is. it may or may not be some kind of fights in this game. I just don't know.

Many modules are not yet released ( building upgrades, researchs?,..)

but what i know is that you don't have a single quite minute fighting for your life, trying to gather enough food. building a single house may screw your whole balance turning your game in a death spiral.

BTW i thank you guys for the other game suggestions posted here, some are looking very very promising, i may really give them a try.

So i just bought Homeworld Remastered Collection.... and it crashes every time i try and play the remastered editions of the game HW1 + HW2 .....

=[ *cries in corner*

I get the "General Failure" error window come up if i try and load into a match/skirmish/campaign. The original ones work fine just the remasters that get the error.

Anyone experience anything similar or have any tips ?

I second/third Endless Space.  Great game (currently testing out Endless Space 2, but it's in its Beta stages), though it is turn based.

ive played the hell out of the X3 games, newest is Albion Prelude, i think.  With just a could small mod additions (not really needed tbh) youll have several hundred hours of playability.

Actually the newest is X rebirth. But thry don't count as 4X games. Still they can provide long gameplay sessions.

Yeah ive got all the X3 games amazing... with some of the Xtended mods its pretty amazing... main reason why im so into Star Citizen!! and yeah as fints said, the newest one is rebirth.. tho its super inferior to the previous ones... shame =[
