Overall this year Star Citizen made very promising advances, which I enjoyed. The Citcon demo was excellent, but lik emany said, overall abit of a letdown.

I can only imagine if I bought a ticket to go this year, I would've been much more dissapointed. Considering the overall presentation, it makes me wonder how big of a reveal the SQ42 was going to be actually, since without it the presentation, as noted previously, felt abit "light".

Spectrum is a cool approach. Love the seamless internal/external communications (voice / text). Sure it doesn't add much to Imperium right now in terms of management.

Loved the sandstorm in the demo. Was glitchy but otherwise looked very nice. Obviously AI and all is not done yet, and the sounds and looks of those ambushers were very similar to sandpeople but I liked their animation and textures. I wasn't sure why he couldn't just land his ship close by? SOme air travel advisory, but was that linked to the Sandstorm approaching further away or just a game gimmick to force you on foot? But this shows the importance for rovers and other transports for planetary missions and exploration.

The editor was quite cool, but this was more something I would expect from an indepth ATV episode, and that goes for the Spectrum section as well. Both of these are good information but not something I would buy a ticket for CitizenCon for.

So actually I'm not sure what I was expecting. I think Chris and Co. shouldn't have hyped it so much during Gamescom. So will the SQ42 segment be a special segment on ATV later this year or is this a "morrow tour" promise that we will end up not seeing over the next year as that time the game would have progressed much further along.

If the S42 segment is as long as it feels like, I wonder why they didn't do a simplified version or something that can show case the new look, animation or actors that they wanted, keep the hype high and end on a high note.

I think there was a hint of SQ42 at the very end, when we met Hamill's character and jumped to the damaged Idris(?).  But yeah, a fully fleshed out mission or two would've been nice.  But still, the V2 planet is a great improvement from the gamescom version and now the game looks like a legit AAA game that's WIP.

Its also good to see that they revised the inner thought system and made the text smaller.  Personally, I prefer the green UI over the current blue one.

Jumping from one planet to the other... not in a pre-rendered cutscene, not in-game, but in the game editor... we have reached a point where all that stuff is not only rendered in real time, but can be edited as well.  This is huge and from now on, I don't think we can call SC a space sim anymore... it has planetside and everything associated with it i.e. you could probably live out your career in SC without ever leaving a planet!  Think about it for a second, you can mine, farm, salvage, repair, pirate stuff while on land and just keep it that way.  I bet someone's going to do that one day... a full playthrough on a single planet.

And btw lol that glitch in the end before the editor, zooming out twice

Thanks! Time to nitpick this with greater detail!

Everything that was pre-show was run from the post AtV by couple of weeks/months. The Crashed Idris was shown before Gamescom and at gamescom event

I really don't like  this "Hype". Well still haven't even started PTU for 2.6 yet and a lot of ship haven't started production, yet are named ships in 3.*. We will have seen  the next CitizenCon before seeing them all to be honest.

However, it was a pretty good demo (for the engine, not the actual game) I hope that we will have the same mmo in our gameplays IE we won't get shoved to a different instances for the game and no-one else will be allowed other than your party. The Javelin has gotten bigger than 240m, a lot bigger. Even the Idris was basically the same length.  That is just me :).

I really enjoyed seeing the spectrum presentation and the planet V2 was amazing especially the editor demo made my jaw drop. Planets are ALOT further along then I thought. I really do believe 3.0 is a lot closer then I previously thought and could release by end of the year or early next year.

Not seeing any SQ42 was of course disappointing but I've never been to hyped for it, the PU is what I have always pledged for and most look forward to.

I do however believe not showing any SQ42 or 2.6 was a bad decision. It really gives the impression of over hyping citcon for more Polaris sales. I understand that if CR believes it's not ready then it's not ready but damn SOMETHING would have been nice, sounds like CR high ass standards again. It seemed like CR was caving to the pressure of a lot of new eyes on the game now but he was right, a bad game is bad for ever but a late game is only late until you play it.

In the end the planetary landing is more then enough to satisfy me, CIG are obviously making huge progress with 3.0 with a nice roadmap to let us know what's coming.

Overall, dissapointed.

Ill admit I watched it until the 3.0 demo finished and then went to bed as it was 2am. So I may have missed some stuff.

Points of dissapointment,

  • No SQ42 demo
  • No SQ42 trailer
  • No SQ42 revised date
  • No 2.6 demo
  • No 2.6 trailer
  • They put a decent amount of effort into the SQ42 influenced video only for it to turn out to be a sales pitch for existing ships. Turning Citizencon into a sales event.
  • PG Planets v2 has a long way to go until its anywhere near BF1, Battlefront and Crysis.
  • 3.0 demo was a mixture of scripted events and "in engine" shots meaning it doesn't fully represent what we will get.
  • AI and combat in 3.0 demo was bad.

Good points.

  • v2 shows promising progress over v1
  • We saw a weather system
  • Crashed ships including a Javelin (Bet the owners loved that)
  • Non humanoid lifeforms (Great nod to Dune)
  • Heavy influenced by the some great sci-fi films (Star wars and Dune). This bodes well for the future if they manage to merge these influences into SC.

So yeh a let down but I cant wait for 3.0. Its going to turn SC into something you can really get your teeth into and enjoy. My guess for 4.0 is end of 2017 though so we really are in for a long haul.

here's my 2cts.

A lot of the powerpoint slideshow could have been compressed, it felt like it dragged on too long. The Spectrum bit looked great but in all honesty at one point I felt like "it's 'just' a community module, thanks, lets move on". Benoit and everyone else involved do deserve some spotlight and all power to them but I was craving for some gameplay.

good to see the plans for coming patches after 3.0. cant wait till Mining and Salvage, I might just pick up a reclaimer if it comes on sale again...

I was really dissapointed we got no SQ42 gameplay. We missed it at GamesCom and they said we'd see more at Citizen Con but alas, it was not to be.

The planetary gameplay blew me away. The detail was amazing, the sandstorm.. oh man.. the weather effects. It was awesome.
The sandworm at the end was a bit much:p The editor looked good, its great to see they can edit planets that easily.

The presentation and information was overall quite good, and I liked the Dune references, but the big problem is that CIG hyped CitizenCon to reveal something of SQ42, and they simply didn't live up to this. The big let down is not them not showing something that isn't finished, but not providing honest information earlier. They should have known for several months now that SQ42 in 2016 or even early 2017 was never going to happen, and let's be honest here, we all knew this already as well, although it was never confirmed. The same is happening with 2.6, which should have happened a long time ago, but there is simply a complete lack of any information regarding any update at all.

IMO they SHOULD have given a heads-up months ago that plans regarding 2.6 and SQ42 changed to avoid too high expectations at this CitizenCon. A pity, since they had plenty of opportunity to learn from all their previous communication mistakes and PR-disasters. Better luck next year.

I agree.

The sad thing is that the Turbolent presentation is very relevant to Org, but everyone else got bored quickly...

We were in for the (42) explosions :P

The rest of the presentation was quite good, more scripted than the Gamescom one tbh, but goo nonetheless.

To quell the dissatisfaction ( I suspect SQ42 was taken very very late leaving a big gap to fill...hence the more scripted and longish presentation and the Turbolent long speech) CIG will have to show something again soo..... but I don't really doubt they will.

Chimera summed it up perfectly. I got the feeling that what we saw was plan B and that the original presentation was going to be centred around a SQ42 demo that was going to blow our minds. Overall I wasn't disappointed with what they did show, just let down by what they didn't show. At the very least I would have expected a little game play footage from the next patch (2.6 currently being evocatii-tested). This doesn't bode well for it being released anytime soon.

I backed in 2012 and knew back then that a project this ambitious was going to take longer than predicted. It's good to finally see the road map going forward and I doubt we will see 4.0 before 2019 but if everything released up until that point is worthy of CR's vision it will be totally worth waiting for.

I was deeply disappointed by it. The vast majority was rehashed info. They would had been better off not having the GamesCom event at all and keeping it for CitizenCon as they originally planned. I think this has had a negative impact on things when normally it should have left us feeling greatly positive. I'll be honest, this weekend has made me worried about where CIG is at right now and what is really going on behind the scenes.

Despite the confidence gained from gamescom, I think quite a lot of people will be (rightly so) cautiously watching CIG's next moves regarding 2.6, what they reveal in future AtV/RtV episodes and whether CR will deliver on the SQ42 reveal before the end of the year.

Sean said this would happen

I watched the majority of the Demo at GeraldEvans' and Flying Squirrel's house with Gorr, we were very impressed with what we saw. And as far as having a ticket to the event, If you haven't been to one, you meet all kinds of really nice people that are interested in many of the same things. That's what the Cons are for.

And what about going to QJ from the atmosphere! Huh, wicked pissah or what.

Just an FYI for those who thought the Sandstorm just vanished. It just moved away very quickly.

uQpxJEc.png

I noticed that too, during the stream. the sandstorm was over so suddenly it almost looked like it was literally turned off but i cought a glimpse of it actually moving on. Really cool.
This opens the door to pretty much all types of weather you can imagine. so good. Imagine blizzards coming in, or thunderstorms. hurricanes. tornadoes. you name it.

I did think the planet they showed at the end of the editor presentation looked way more interresting. I want to see crazy sh*t. Massive sulfur vents, toxic environments, crazy flora and fauna. Did anyone notice at one point on the sand planet there was some kind of crystal deposit at the edge of the water? Wish we got a closer look....

It was a bit of a letdown. While the roadmap information was good to see and the demo was amazing, it destroyed what momentum GamesCon had given them. If SQ42 was a last minute removal I can accept that, things happen, though I hope they show it once it's ready, not delay till another event, to get some of that lost momentum back. Hopefully they'll give us more information in ATV about the cause of the delay, might be a good Bug Smasher's episode once it's fixed.

Being in on development from the start of a project we get to see all the negatives as well as the positives and CIG is not good at spinning those negatives to mitigate their effects.

Was it disappointing? Yea, it was. Am I worried about the future of Star Citizen? No, not really.

CIG let us down by over-hyping something that they ended up not showing us. That doesn't mean we wont ever see the SQ42 gameplay, or 2.6 gameplay, or 3.0 gameplay, or the idris in greater detail, or any of the things your thought CitCon2016 was going to have.

Over the next month I expect that CIG will try and make up for this years citcon through ATV and associated content (aside from the first episode back from citcon - becasue the first one after an event is normally pretty shit). They damaged the trust between us. Couldn't deliver on time (who is really surprised here??) but they will make up for it. They have to. I really don't want to talk about what happens if they don't. Trust in CR.

Ok. Here is the deal.
SQ42 + Star Citizen have been in development for 4 years.

We all love the work they are doing, the technology and all that. But they need to deliver.
This may turn out to be a 10 year in development game and that is a lot. Some of our backers may even die before the game is out. This is no joke as we have older people backing the project.

So. First things first. I support CIG in that rushing a game makes no sense. I support them in that they are trying to build a trully next gen space sim that publishers would not fund due to the risk.
I accept the risk. I accept that the project may even fail. I also know there is no other AAA space sim at this level.

But right now I'm upset with CIG. And for one major reason. Why the hell did they wait until October to tell us they would need more time for SQ42?
Come on. They announced a 2016 release date last year. SQ42 page stated so. And now they show some slides detailing a number of systems and content that clearly show they need quite some more time to finish it.
Probably a full year.
How could they announce a 2016 release date last year if they had so many things to finish first?

People have been asking about SQ42 progress for months now. They should have been honest at Gamescom and stated that SQ42 release window was going to be pushed.
It is this type of PR actions that fuels the critics.

We want a great game. Not a rushed one. But milestones must be reached.

Just do it.
