MISC - Prospector (Mining Ship)

I bought-back my Prospector back in December using store credit because I hadn't used my quarterly token. I'm glad that I did because I had to use my Q1 token for the Hurricane and Q2 token for the Vanduul Blade.

Mining wasn't something I was originally interested in, but there's an over-abundance of combat in the Alpha PU. I want to try something new and different, so I'll give mining a shot.

My concern about mining relates to the problems I've had with cargo hauling: CRASHES. Both ship crashes and game crashes have bankrupted me multiple times, causing me to give up and wait for the next minor update for the aEUC reset. I anticipate that crashes could be even worse for the Prospector because it'll probably take hours of effort to fill the mining ship's saddlebags with ore, and if you suffer a crash before you sell it, all of that time and effort will have been wasted. That could certainly provoke rage-quits.

Then there's the threat of pirates and griefers. Planets/moons are large in the PU, but ship sensors have a very long range. If I'm not mistaken, a ship in orbit can detect a powered down ship on the surface from 30+ km. And a mining Prospector won't be powered down; its drilling laser and tractor beam will probably emit strong EM and thermal signatures that will be easily detectable. Prospectors will be sitting ducks for griefers.

I know it's smart to work as a team, so the simple solution is to hire players with starfighters to watch your back. But I kinda doubt many players will be interested in loitering around watching a Prospector mine for hours.

I anticipate that mining could be as risky and frustrating as hauling cargo, which isn't good. I wonder how CIG will handle it.

I agree 100%.   I actually despise mining in most other MMO (I do it but have no fun at it and buy most of my ore / refined ore as needed from Auction houses as oppose to grinding out obtaining ore myself).   In SC though it looks like Mining will actually be fun and challenging - not boring and clicking a button from one node to another like in most MMOs.   Most MMO's I PVE for about 2-3 months (finishing most content by then)  - then become allergic to PVE and only exclusively PVP in games after that.   SC I vowed to stick with at least a 50/50 game play indefinitely (PVE / PVP both) mainly because I don't think its possible to run out of PVE content in SC (and there is always the risk of PVP while PVEing - making PVEing all that more enjoyable)

Per above I think the "threat" of pirates and griefers - disrupting your mining operations - actually makes mining more fun (per above the threat of combat makes it more exciting).   The beauty of SC is that the more risk there is at an endeavor the more reward (so if you are going to mine in an area known to have pirates - that system will likely give you more reward as a result).   The increased risk reward then pays for fighter escort....... making the game (and PVE) all that more enjoyable.

This is why I love the Prospector as a ship.  It produces potential team play (in risky missions but also not risky missions with the need for haulers).   I even like the team play it promotes with the Orion (have the Orion mining in an Asteroid Belt then have the Prospector mining on a nearby moon or planet - then have a hauler pick up the un-refined ore from the Prospector and ship it to the Orion for refining - then ship it to market = leaving the Orion and the Prospector in the field to continue their work).

Keep in mind if people get tired of one operation (like mining) - you can potentially just trade being a captain from one ship to the other (just swap ships with your friend and be the hauler for awhile or the escort fighter for awhile while they maybe give mining a shot in your Prospector).

Also - "watching" someone mine isn't boring if you are an escort for that miner because you'll probably want to set up a CAP or patrol instead of just parking yourself nearby.   And if you are getting paid for the escort then it makes it worthwhile - especially if you can set up an ambush on a pirate that might not expect the escort.

Another thing to note from last Friday's RTV is that the Prospector is ideal for not being noticed when operating in hostile areas - not stealth but good vs scans......(with the Xi'an tech and ability to disrupt enemy scans - like they always mentioned for the Freelancer - but Disco (Jared) brought it up in RTV)

Was my first full (32 scu) mining run with a safe return to base.

Almost the entire sale was less than 4% of load, so if we ever get a way to filter the inert junk out of our payload it would be helpful.

Paying more attention next run to see if can do anything about that as gather, but this was my 4th ship so a little worn out lol.

Two blown up trying to wig out the mining and a third that went into QT during a server fail and after a few minutes I just shut it down.

This is fun, but you really need some time and calm to deal with 3.2 ptu.. It is not ready for prime time yet unless they want to hire a lot more forum mods to stamps out the fires and stroke egos. - DRUM out

EDIT: the SCAN determines junk versus mineral, so avoid the 3.5% ones lol.  Here was a 27%

Wow. I am really enjoying the mining. I started using a second joystick for all the mining and scanning options. I find it way more comfortable using the “throttle slider” on the joystick to control the beam intensity vs the mouse wheel.

      Greetings citizens!
      After almost two months of absence, I finally released a new video - this time it's the MISC Prospector commercial, special for the contest by CIG.
      So, two my videos in a row was made a special for contests - but 3.3 is coming! Which means there will be new content in the game, which means there will be new videos from me  
      The creation of this video was not easy, and I'm not completely sure about the final version - perhaps due to the fact that I looked it 400 times while making edits, and I already tired from it.
