C.A.S(Close Air Support); why dont we have it?

Recommended Posts

OK so I've been looking around the forums for a bit and i have come across multiple threads about drop ships.(the idea of fast armored and flying transportation of Marines is very nice) but i haven't found a SINGLE thread about C.A.S in-witch is one of the most important roles for planet side fighters... The idea of C.A.S is for a light(sometimes heavy) Fighter to provide planet-side airborne firepower for ground troops..(example of C.A.S being the A-10 Warthog or the P-47 thunderbolt, etc) C.A.S roles ranging from escorting dropships to laying down heavy firepower on enemy units or emplacements.

I mean if i was a Marine on the ground i would absolutely love any and all C.A.S support i can get.. after all who is gonna keep the enemy's heads down  and our dropships up... Mark my words without C.A.S our dropships and infantry would just be cannon fodder to other C.A.S or enemy AAA

A.N: Feel free to correct me if i am wrong on any points or point out any flaws with Imperium having C.A.S

@danredda Really? Dang! I could've sworn atmospheric flight was confirmed... Well i guess if we ever get it I'll be first in line to volunteer as a C.A.S pilot ;)

P.S: Thanks for pointing out the glaring flaw in this thread!

A.N: Excuse my lack of in-depth information about star citizen I've only started actively researching it 3 days ago.

I asked a question about CAS a month ago during a Twitch stream, Ben said that they defiitely would like to make it a real thing. While I'm sure they don't plan orbital strikes and atmospheric flight for launch, it could be a feature implemented in the future.

That would be wonderfull! I can understand no orbital strikes because then you would need something along the lines of a MAC orbital cannon to defend against it. I guess with atmospheric it's just so much needed for it that there would be no way to put it in prelaunch

They have mentioned on many occasions that they would LIKE to be able to include this as a feature, but it most likely won't be one that would be available until a bit of time after the launch (read that as a year or more). While they're doing their best to make sure they can include as much freedom and seamless transitions as possible between space flight and atmospheric flight, the simple fact is that the level if visual and model fidelity they are aiming for means there will be some limitations for ingress and egress of a planetary body. It also makes sense that most planets would have specific "points of entry" in which people are allowed to enter and exit and people outside of those areas would most likely be attacked, detained, or shot down. In-atmo flight will most likely be possible in limited senses (i.e. at the racetracks and such) from the get-go, but being able to fly out from a city, skim the surface of the planet, and touch down near a scenic waterfall for some awesome screencaps will most likely not happen for a long time. ;)

Also, just FYI, if you're unable to find a specific topic on the forum by using the search function, but you are not wanting to "re-post" something that has already been done before, you're more than welcome to PM one of the specialists involved in the area you're wanting to ask about and see if there have been posts made before, or if it's something we cannot talk about because of features, reasons, or OPSEC. It never hurts to ask!

I am more than hoping they enable atmospheric entry and operations in Star Citizen's planetside action. As a leader of one of Imperium's platoons, I want my marines covered and secure in their drop ships knowing that they will arrive safely as can be to dispense their indiscriminate justice.

That all being said, you may have seen the topic discussed on marine boarding topics, as we are wanting C.A.S. for our boarding operations. Even though it's not planetside, we want our drop ships protected as we make entry on an enemy vessel. To that extent we do have a few dedicated redeemer pilots who want to either be drop ship pilots or C.A.S. to support marine drop operations. I'm sure once we find out more about planetside that will spill over into atmospheric entry and support as well.

So fear not, even though it is not heavily discussed for obvious reasons, it is something people are interested in and will be approached at the appropriate time and with the required information and confirmations from CIG. In the mean time, you are more than welcome to join our pilots as C.A.S. for boarding operations. :)

And you do know that the number of people participating in a battle will be limited, probably not enough to warrant much support. Ground AAA may be limited to small arms and some crew-served weapons, nothing like a ASU/ZSU-23-4 or a Gepard.

Understandable. While AAA may not be a thing i highly doubt that they wouldn't have small arms AA that couldn't rip right through a single seat fighter or a light drop-ship.

@Furioso I've found (through research; not personal experience) the Aurora Legionnaire to be a excellent C.A.S designated vehicle; Due to its(from what I've observed) extremely stable frame to its more than adequate firepower(Those Chain link Gatling Cannons look very.. very mean)Though sadly all I have is the LN I am more than willing to assist you and your men with D.S.C.A.S ([Temp name since I couldn't find the name for such a operation]:Deep Space Close Air Support)

If the close air support was going to be in-atmosphere I feel like a few ships wouldn't be entirely good choices as they're designed for space travel.  I just mean that I'm not sure they're all designed with proper wing-spans and whatnot (I'm not super knowledgeable about this) to be able to fly effectively under gravity.

@Sploofmoof If i am not mistaken wings aren't needed for atmospheric flight if you have a space fighter with rotating thrusters; works just like a VTOL (sept' much much better). You gotta think wings are primarily used for A: lift generation and B: weapon mounts. a Space craft of any kind can literally hover midair with its side thrusters(or other rotating engines used for course correction mid-space. Wings are only needed to fly in atmosphere if you cant hover without losing altitude; because you have to keep moving forward to generate life under your wings to keep from falling down. [At-least i believe that's how it works, correct me if i am wrong.]

[ADDITION'S]

#1: If I may ask;  Does anyone know if planets will have defensive weapons such as MAC cannons or Orbital Railguns? Heck even just small AA turrets?

Probably. They've already confirmed turrets for customs, so if they have automated turrets for check-ins, it's not far off to imagine AA turrets, especially on high-value planets or stations.

Concerning C.A.S., we'll have it for sure. As @Furioso said, we're going to need escorts for boarding crafts. We simply won't have spacecraft directly supporting our troops, unless it's to blow escape holes in the boarded ship's hull, disable power plants, etc. I know, I know, it's kinda contradictory when we're talking about close air support, but it'll probably be the best we'll get until atmospheric flight/planet-side combat comes in. That's a whole different ball game, however.

CAS may indeed become a mission type IF (and only if) CIG (eventually) allows atmospheric flight over the planetary surface (which would be essential for strike craft to be able to reach their targets).

HOWEVER

As powerful as CAS could be, there's also the possibility that CAS will be less common/necessary when we have the option for NGFS, also know as "Naval Gunfire Support" (see: Orbital Strike)

Haha, NGFS, that'd be badass. IIRC, the studio behind Eve Online is developing an FPS that coordinates with Eve players so that spaceships can actively bombard FPS maps from orbit. If CIG implemented something like that, I'd be over the moon!

@wfja Yeah but the problem with Orbital bombardment is you cant land troops before bombardment or you'll kill them as-well... also you'll get shot out of orbit by a MAC cannon or something of the sort before you get near the surface because infantry aren't contesting the AAA sites! ;P Orbital bombardment is best used AFTER the AAA sites are disabled by C.A.S and infantry.

BTW  @Arcanus since you went ahead and posted that pic now i gotta post this one ;P

Rail-gun bombardment be damned! Its all about the cyclonic torpedo bombing!

[EDIT] be advised in the gif they are NOT bombarding the planet.. they are trying to "purge" the surface(aka blow the shit out of the planet)

Yeah, I got the impracticality of it (unless, of course, they allow precision bombardment). I just more or less liked the idea of it. :P

Unfortunately, I have a sneaking suspicion that this is a non-issue without atmospheric flight/extra-city planetside combat.

It will be cool to storm a station, and clear contested hallways by calling in missile strikes with enemies getting sucked out of hull breaches. This beats clearing stations and ships the hard way. But the main problem will be coordinating precision strikes is that specialists like JTAC's will have to be trained to work with targeting in 3 dimensions.

The reason so far -> Atmospheric flight has not been confirmed as being a part of the game. Simple as that.

Atmospheric flight -> Confirmed

I think a ship like the Constellation could be very useful for a Marine squad.

-> Bring the marines and a rover to the landing location on the planet, drop off the marines and rover and stay nearby to provide air support with the turrets and snub fighter.

Jokes aside, the Connie would be good for this purpose.

While it's not in the forum rules, His post is actually merited as Atmospheric Flight / Dogfighting was confirmed recently...prior to the post, we had no confirmations of it. The post was still in-line with the thread topic as a whole :D
