MISC Reliant - Mini Hauler & Variants

Recommended Posts

I think people are getting "blinded" by LTI  :cripes:  - as Ben has said many times Hull Insurance will almost be unnoticeable (so don't place so much value on it)... and if you really must have it get a Reliant because you really like it better - or get it for a CCU to another ship.

I'm in love. Gonna melt my 24 Month Delta pack for it (probably).

I think this would be a mistake.  One you loose a "package".... and second.... the Delta will probably be a better fighter than the Reliant (unless you want to pick up the Reliant to CCU it into a Delta or if you like the Reliant for another purpose)

Not every ship can be the most awesomest ship design ever, that's why they're producing so many - they want everyone to be able to find a ship that they enjoy being in. Right now I'm torn between this and the Aurora CL because I want a mini-hauler but as of now there's no way to get the Reliant in a package, and I'd have to drop one of my three character slots to pick it up.

I personally think the Aurora CL will be a better mini Hauler (requiring less fuel - and in general less costly to operate - and $5 cheaper).  However if you really want LTI and you don't have it on your Aurora CL then this could be a deciding factor - since they are close in many aspects for function (you can't CCU from the more expensive Reliant to the less expensive Aurora CL).

Even though I think the Aurora CL will be a better Mini-Hauler..... I do think the base Reliant will be a better mini - Miner ..... and mini - Salvage ship (with its Tractor Beam)

Also, I think the "news van" variant is going to be a comms relay more than anything, with the potential to be an info gatherer or offensive ewar vessel (as opposed to the herald's core design for ewar resistance). Just my take on it, seems interesting.

I am more interested in the News Van Variant - as you describe..... but also in the Science Variant (got to see what these will turn out to be).  Remember to pick one up in order to get the Variant (if you want LTI)..... and again you can always CCU the Reliant or Melt it if you are not impressed when the Variants come out.

Will you be selling hot dogs in it?

Potential customer inquiring...

Well... I am really more of a PvPer when it comes to the MMO's I've been playing since 2002 or so like 90/10 % ...... but with Star Citizen I am actually looking forward to other PvE things - other than just arena style PvP.   Thus..... I am looking forward to making UEC off of broadcasting news.... watching and broadcasting Murray Cup or Arena Commander Matches (you can have fun watching and making UEC or $ at the same time).  I'll even have fun touring and seeing the sites (and get more UEC with my 890 Jump and Phoenix - with the VIPs but you can also do this with a Reliant - maybe not as profitable).  I'll have the Military ships and campaigns vs the Vanduul most of the time....... but..... why not a change of scene and....... do some mining with my Orion, Salvaging with Reclaimer, Hauling with Hull E, etc....... and News / or / Science with the Reliant?  We'll see how cool the variants are and if they fill a unique niche well I'll probably keep it instead of Melting it for something else.

I love how it looks but I would prefer it it was more asymmetric, like one side longer than the other. Sadly they already said that making it asymmetric would result in weight unbalance and therefore less maneuverable, but I still think it would make the Reliant cooler

I too wish for an asymmetric design on a ship-but I don't think it has a place on the reliant. Such a ship would have serious atmospheric flight issues. I know people don't like the planes in space-but-if something is damaged at least they might be able to return to a planet surface. And the reliant had to be flexible to make it suitable for all sorts of players!

I am confused, in episode 48 of Reverse the ‘Verse it was said that (regarding the Reliant concept sale) "If you pick up a concept one now, you can add the package later."

Thanks for pointing this out, sorry for the confusion. While there is no plan to make a specific "upgrade my reliant to a package" item in the store, we have plans to rework the way people can buy the game itself. This project covers what Ben was talking about in Reverse the Verse.

Yep! Which means all my concepts will now have NPCs!

??? How is that?  You have the ability to buy an extra NPC slot separately - from a stand alone ship or a ship package (CR talked about this awhile ago on 10FTC)...... but the quote above doesn't indicate that a concept ship sale "comes with" an NPC slot...?  Is there something I missed?

The quote above is in regard to Ben saying that if you buy the Reliant now you'll be able to upgrade it to a package. Packages are full copies of the game and it's been a long known point that if you have multiple packages you can use the others as character slots.  Since all but two of my ships now are concepts, they will soon be replenishing my army of drones!

I think that CIG should offer the a Reliant LTI game package now -- it doesn't make sense to wait until later. Even if sometime in the future, CIG decided to offer a Reliant game package with LTI, as well as the option to upgrade a Reliant LTI standalone ship to a game package for like $10, I think it makes more sense to offer the LTI game package now, rather than wait.

The whole point of CIG creating a Third Starter Ship was to give potential backers another choice to entice them to pledge and join the Star Citizen community. But it's pointless for a new backer only buy a Reliant standalone ship, because they won't be able to fly it in either Arena Commander or the PU. They need a game package to play, like an Arena Commander Starter Package.

I don't understand CIG's reasoning for not offer a Reliant game package now. I know that none of the other Concept Sales offered the ships with game packages, because most of the other Concept Ships have been high-tier "ultimate role" ships, which aren't well-suited for a player's starting ship, whereas the Reliant was created as a Starter Ship, so it should have a game package.

Reliant Q&A - Part 1

RELIANT Q&A - PART 1

Reliant_LandingInsitu_Final_Hobbins.png

Reliant-Blueprint-1.jpgReliant Concept Blueprint

One thing people don’t appreciate about the Reliant is how dead on the name is. This is a ship that can take serious punishment and keep on flying. During one of the CTX-3 [first manned Reliant prototype] flights, I managed to snap half a wing off in a collision. Klaxons sounded, red lights flashing… my nav readouts went dead for half a second, until the redundancies switched on. Fly by wire was pretty much a lost cause, but with some careful manual thruster taps I managed to make it back home in one piece (minus a wing.) This is a ship that’ll keep your butt safe.

- Yark “Badger” Malloy, MISC In-House Test Pilot II

NEW for 2946: the MISC Reliant is the galaxy’s latest, greatest jump-capable spaceship. Featuring an industry-leading silhouette and the latest in adapted xenotechnology, the Reliant doesn’t just look better than anything on the flight line… it flies better, too. The base Reliant, shipping Q4 2945, is a dedicated short-range space transporter solution with the broad ability to adapt to a dozen or more different roles. Whether you’re moving your grandmother’s Hartwell or your company’s refined titanium, the Reliant will get you there. The Reliant, only from MISC.

MISC Cavalcade of Transports! brochure, 2945

Greetings Citizens,

Last month, we ran a collection of Hull series Q&A posts during the concept sale. The idea went over so well that we’ve decided to make it a tradition. All future concept sales will include at least one ‘post launch’ Q&A post. This week, for the MISC Reliant concept sale, we’re answering questions backers have posted to this thread. An additional Q&A will be posted on Friday. A special thank you to designer Matt Sherman for answering your Reliant questions!

Question & Answer

Could you describe the Reliant’s basic role, compared to the other starters in just a few words?

Utility Vehicle – While it can’t run multiple roles at once, the Reliant is a starter that was built specifically to best accommodate some of the more PU-focused play-styles like Research and Reporting.

What will the second players duties be other than manning weapons? Why will it better to run this ship with two players rather than solo?

Turret-controls – If all the weapons are slaved to the pilot, you really lose out on the massive coverage arcs the wing-tip Omni-Orb turret offers the ship. So whether in combat, working scanners, or working as a news-reporter, every variant was planned from the ground up to have dedicated second-seat gameplay available.

Is there any practical benefit envisioned / planned for the transformation from horizontal to vertical orientation? What would be the advantage over simply staying in one orientation at all times?

Yes, the plan right now is that the Vertical-configuration will be the ideal combat and maneuverability mode of flight because of a better spread of the thrusters. The Horizontal configuration won’t handle as well, but will have an improved top-speed over the Vertical mode.

How much walking around room can we expect to see in the Reliant? The cargo area looks wide and deep enough to walk around quite a bit (almost Cutlass sized?), but it also looks like the cargo area might compress vertically when it closes leaving not enough space to walk upright in.

It’s not a fully stand-up walking space in the storage compartment while the ship is in flight. When you’re landed, you’ll have enough clearance, but you’ll be crouching to walk back there in space.

Does the stock reliant have bed(s)/a jumpdrive?

a. Bed – Nothing set for sure right now, but we’re looking into a small fold-out bed from the floor for some of the variants; think more along the lines of a barebones cot.

b. Jumpdrive – Unsure for all the variants, but like most of our ships, even if it doesn’t come with one stock, all models of the Reliant will be able to install one.

Will we see more ships result of Alien/Human collaboration, or is the Reliant a unique, one of a kind design?

That depends on what other Human manufactures strike out and make trade deals with other races. MISC made enough deals with the Xi’an to make the Reliant, so only time will tell if anyone else makes similar deals.

How fast is the transformation from horizontal to vertical? Is it quick and easy to briskly bounce between the two flights modes?

The exact time is in the works, but most likely a few seconds of transition time. It should be fast enough to change modes for most any non-combat gameplay, but it probably won’t be the safest to bounce between the 2 in a firefight.

Can players exit / change seats while the Reliant is in vertical flight mode?

No, right now it’s only planned to have you getting in/out of the seats while the ship is in Horizontal mode. The upper-seat will be the pilots chair, with the lower seat the gunner/turret operator.

There is a ramp, can we park a rover inside?

No, the Greycat’s support struts would get crushed when the hold compacts for flight.

Is the gimble ‘Tractor Beam’ Hardpoint, a hardpoint that can switch out weapons for tractors beams, or a gimble mount with a built in tractor beam that also mounts weapons?

The Tractor Beam mount is the Wing-Tip turret. When the Reliant becomes flight-ready for Arena Commander, that turret will come stock with a Tractor Beam installed, but the tractor beam can be removed and swapped with a size 2 weapon. Whether there will be more than one turret option (e.g. two size 1 weapons, or one size 2 weapon), or other some configuration will depend on iterations to the hardpoint system and asset creation between now and then.

Is possible to just rotate the seats and fly like that?

Currently not planned, but may be something we explore as the ship gets flight ready.

Visibility issue: can you make the floor retractable? Otherwise there is no visibility on the right side when vertical.

Yes, we’re already looking at that floor panel. When the detailed specs for the Reliant started shaping up, and aMASSIVE, best-in-class viewing angle for both seats was a major part of that planning. Xi’an-inspired glasswork at its finest.

Do the Xi’An materials and technologies used in the construction of the Reliant enable the ship to better handle the effects of heat, radiation and gravimetric effects, when compared to its competitors?

Yes, though to what extent this will play out is more something that will be sorted as those kinds of environmental hazards come online. It won’t be so substantial that it lets you fly recklessly through them, but you shouldn’t have to tip-toe through either.

Would this be any good for exploring? Jump points? How does it compare with the 315p, the only explorer in the price range?

Overall, expect a 315p to be better at finding jumppoints. The Reliant is more going to be doing in-system/region sensor scanning, research, and exploration. It could still definitely map a new jump if you find one, but the bigger profile compared to a 315p may lead you to flying into a smaller point than you could fit.

A question about the weapon fittings, the spec listed two fixed mount on wing and one gimbal mount on nose, but I see from the released arts that the two M3As are mounted on a ball shape unmanned turret, which will be the case?

The 2 M3A’s mounted in the concept art are installed in place of the Tractor Beam (guns are sexier anyways). When the Reliant lands in your hangar, you’ll have 2 Size 1 guns on the wings, and the S3 hardpoint on the wing-tip where the Turret is now.

Let's post our ideas for Star Citizen. The galaxy's a huge place, full of curiosities and splendor! Please be polite and have fun, while we discuss in detail the additions we want to see in SC. Constructive criticism is always welcome, keep it friendly...
Here are a few ideas I will start us off with:
      -Planets-
Planets should have highly varied biomes and environments. These should include ocean planets, desert worlds, jungle moons, cavernous lands, ice planets, swamps, (and a personal favorite) lava worlds! It would be cool to have various atmospheric conditions, such as excessive heat or cold or toxicity, even radioactivity, which could have specified suits designed for protection from those environments (without which players would perish!). Planets should also definitely have varying levels of gravity, some with no gravity at all, and some with intense gravitational pull and pressure, suit required. Gas giants would be really cool, where traversing the upper atmosphere would be OK. There could be floating outposts, etc. Then moving too close to the core could crush most ships... Also would be cool to see asteroid-based outposts, with subterranean areas.
      -Weather-
Weather should factor in on at least some planets, but not all. Some planets should remain placid, while others could have weather cycles such as: sandstorms, blizzards, high winds, etc. It would also be interesting to have electrical/radiation storms where again, special shielding would be required to survive. Another interesting addition would be meteor showers, perhaps not damaging to the player in most cases... Of course, the most intense weather should be on planets with lesser city-populations. There should also be 'weather' cycles in space the likes of radiation/electrical storms, where ships' shields would be rendered ineffective. Perhaps here or there, a neutronic wave front (Star Trek, Ahem)! Deadly nebula!
      -Ships-
The ships so far are absolutely bad-ass. Can hardly put it into words just how right they look and feel. I do have one minor issue to discuss regarding player immersion: Planetary entry/re-entry seems a bit off... It feels somewhat awkward orienting the ship into a nose-dive and then accelerating toward the planet. While that should still be an option for entry, it seems lacking, if it's the only way. Players should be allowed to let their ships drift slowly downward towards the surface (with a horizontal orientation relative to ground), all the while getting pulled to greater and greater speeds due to gravity. Currently it seems as though there is no gravity, requiring ships to nose-dive and hit the thrusters. The level of gravity should also have effects on how quickly ships take off, and how much fuel is consumed. Also some of the more lightweight craft should be capable of water-landing and flotation, some, not all.
      -Weaponry-
Weapons are also looking pretty nice, and I can't wait to hunt some bounties and pirates with the Scourge Cannon! Turrets on ships are awesome and so are the weapons additions to the ships main systems. Weapons turrets on ships should not be automated. Automation would detract from the challenge of the game, and we never want that! Instead the player should be able to either hire NPCs or other players to man different positions aboard their ship. Also it seems some of the infantry firearms are being slightly 'overdone', so to speak. For example the Devastator shotgun seemingly has way too much level of detail and unnecessary bulk added to it. My suggestion is to lean more on the side of realism. I know it's Sci-Fi. Still I hope devs don't get hung up on making things like fancy-diamond-encrusted-platinum-laser cannons with under-barrel flame throwers..! It would be amazing to see (in rare cases), Orbital Weapons Platforms that could, if accessed, rain supreme firepower down on the planet's surface, destroying small outposts, structures or towns... Of course it would be necessary to make accessing it an extreme challenge.
Accessories are nice. But keep away from over-extravagant weapon design.
      -Exploration-
Exploration should be the fundamental, key point of the game. While some may argue that it is space battles, I tend to disagree. With so many space craft, vehicles and weapons, the gameplay will quickly become boring and the equipment redundant if there is not a vast amount of exploration. Here are a few thoughts on aspects of exploration: Artifacts, Flora and Fauna. Scattered throughout the verse there could be a plethora of different types of Artifacts to be found, only through rigorous exploring. There should be ancient ruins with old alien technology, perhaps rare weapons. There should be Obelisks and Pyramids and rare trinkets that could be sold or held as trophies. There could be mysterious devices, like the Orbs in Mass Effect (the first game) with strange properties. There could be alien tech that could be found and then saved for use at a far later date. Regarding Flora and Fauna, there could be a huge variety of harvesting options for certain crafting items. There really ought to be many creatures, perhaps mostly neutral/friendly. However some animals, in rare cases could turn out to be hostile, and highly challenging to face. Perhaps giant worms, or insectoids! Another thing could be infected worlds, or derelict ships (think Dead Space, or The Thing) where your only choice is to fight for survival or run for your life. There should also be intact derelicts. We've seen plenty of demolished ones. Some should be intact, abandoned in space, or even on land. Exploration should not, and I can't stress this enough, should not stem solely or mostly from missions! Let the missions be vast and varying in type by all means, a multitude of missions is always welcome. But please don't conflate missions and side quests, with exploration.

      -Armor & Apparel-
The armor should of course have good variety. Weight should factor in, which I believe it currently does. Also there should definitely be highly specialized suits for specific tasks. Of course there'll be a space suit for EVA in outer space, but adding other specializations for other armor sets/suits would be great too. There should be a set more suited for enduring intense heat, or cold or radiation. There should also mostly be non-EVA capable sets IMO. Body armor should not be conflated with EVA suits, and they should for the most part be separate, with a few exceptions. It would be cool to see a lot of options other than  simple armor for combat and space suits for EVA. One thought would be a stealth-suit with either quiet movement or even invisibility. Mostly I'm hoping it will prove an actual challenge to obtain armors, so that everyone isn't immediately buffed just after they begin playing. Let there be lots of varying, quirky outfits to be found.
      -Miscellaneous-
NPCs for hire or available as crew members should use a rating system the likes of the one used in Metal Gear Solid V. They could have a certain class of career like 'linguist' or 'gunner' or 'medic', and within that specialty a certain set of ratings. Players should be able to activate distress beacons (false or genuine). If a player's ship is captured, they should be given the option to fight aboard the enemy ship in order to escape (think Han Solo and co, the capture of Millennium Falcon!).
Where are all the AIs? This is the future after all... There should be robots of some kind or another, even perhaps a sentient machine race!
There should also be a minimal amount of spawn/respawn actions. I realize this is counter-intuitive, given there's a massive universe to traverse. But it will add to the replay and return-to-game value; if people can easily spawn their ships and/or fast travel around it will make things overly-easy. It's nice that there's a wait-timer for summoning ships (at least destroyed ones). However, if a ship is not at the station at which you are staying, it should take time to arrive near you, and there should be a fuel cost and fee. Having all your ships easily at your fingertips will take away from the immersion and challenge of the game. It should also be more challenging IMO, to acquire cash. Gaining millions of credits should take a very long time. The quicker people progress in the game, the quicker the MMO will die.
I don't believe there should be a 'difficulty setting' option. The universe in general should prove pretty damn challenging, with areas of extreme and lesser challenges. Some mini-games would also be cool, so long as they remain within the Persistent Universe. Game modes are a bad idea. It's understandable at this point, given there are players currently in the game who want something working. But later on, when development is (mostly) "complete", having different game-modes will detract from the main MMO.
All hoverbikes should remain as hoverbikes, and not be turned into flying-space-hoverbikes! Please remove the flight-function for hoverbikes. Having flight for them is ridiculous and totally misses the point of a hoverbike. While I do agree that they should have some (slight) altitude control and perhaps a jump/boost, they should not  be able to simply fly away, especially up into space. A hoverbike is like a speeder from Star Wars, it's not for flight; only for elevated, fast, ground travel! This goes for all ships and vehicles; if they have a specialty let them stick to that specialty, no blurring lines, except perhaps in rare cases.
