MISC Starfarer Gemini

Single thing that makes me to look away is the 7 crew. Don`t care that I can fly this with 2 only. Why to loose precious space with chairs and beds....

I've never understood why some people perceive a ship with a higher crew capacity as a negative.

I mean, I get why some people don't like that the Idris or Javelin require a crew to operate. Whereas ships like the Starfarer or Constellation or Hull series, CIG has stated that they can be flown by only 1 or 2 people, but they have crew stations for at least 4. What's so terrible about being capable of having up to 7 people aboard your ship?

A ship having the crew quarters for a larger crew isn't a waste of space -- it's practical and realistic. Besides, CIG is developing an enhanced modularity system that will supposedly allow ship owners to reconfigure the interior layout of their ships, so it might be possible to reduce the size of the crew living quarters for increased cargo capacity, or other purposes.

Even if this wasn't possible, I don't understand why having crew quarters is a problem. Sure, every ship could be "optimized" for maximum cargo capacity if all non-essential equipment was removed. I suppose if you really wanted to you could just have a single chair for the captain/pilot, a single bed/escape pod, a food and water dispenser, and a toilet, and everything else would be cargo storage. That radically spartan interior might appeal to certain people, but most people would hate it. And if that ship was real and a person actually had to live and work aboard that ship, they'd hate it too.

CIG designs the ships the way they'd be designed in the real world, with ample space, comforts, conveniences, and amenities that would appeal to people. CIG can't possibly please everyone, but some of these criticisms are simply unreasonable.

I don`t like dual cockpit too. If I`m the only pilot why in the hell I have two seats? I prefer to be in center of the ship and take out other chair. But maybe is just me.

The second chair will be used by a sensors operator and/or the fuel collection specialist. Those will be important and necessary roles for the Starfarer, because if collecting raw fuel from gas giants is anything like mining asteroids, it's not going to be as simple as clicking a button and watching a progress bar fill. I imagine that it will require skill, experience, and careful coordination between the different crew positions in the cockpit to collect raw fuel safely and efficiently. And refining fuel and refueling other ships will definitely require additional crew.

I understand that you'd prefer a single, centralized pilot's seat, but that's not how large vehicles or aircraft are driven or flown. The Starfarer is a fairly large ship, so having a central pilot's seat would not be advantageous, because the Starfarer's cockpit wouldn't be any smaller. The pilot's seat is traditionally on the left side of a two-seater cockpit, and the pilot doesn't have as good a view out the right side of the ship; but a central pilot's chair would suffer from poor views to both sides.

Perhaps when CIG implements enhanced ship interior modularity, it'll be possible to reconfigure the Starfarer's cockpit with a central pilot's chair. But I don't think it would be as beneficial as you assume.

I went for this 1 as it does sound like its going to be epic. Yes my chosen path will probably be trade but felt I needed a more offensive ship to a few more options for the future as who knows in 1 year what you will want to do the most. On the other side maybe it maybe a option to trade in the future or sell on should I not like it.

Also to add I got a weird gut feeling that this ship is going to be something big I don't know why and cant explain it just do :).

I went ahead and purchased the upgrade for my LTI starfarer but will wait to apply it.  Either way, my "Tortalleon Pygmy" will be amazing.

Reavern, don't get us wrong, we're not bashing multicrew aspects of the game.  I look forward to the chance when I'll be able to help others crew and it'll be great, but I do not know how likely it will be that we can get 7 people to crew a ship (any ship, especially a T&I ship).  Such circumstances would be few and far between.  Will every superhornet fly with two seats filled?  Likely no.  Same with the Gladiator.  Unless there is some really important functionality tied to that seat it'll be mostly wasted space.  I will likely fly alone on most of my ships just because I will be reserving the freedom to play as I want.  I want to help Imperium and I want to have a MMO experience-but I absolutely hate waiting to play a game so I can gather friends who want to play with me.  If I can't solo (with my two NPCs) then I won't be having this ship.

We here at SCB (hopefully) understand that (unlike those folks at the RSI forum) that CIG reserves the right to modify the game as they see fit.  I'm a big proponent of giving them full license.  Want to change the Superhornet to a one seat ship?  Great.  Do it.  Want to make the Idris a battleship?  You'll have a lot of happy fans who aren't posting on the forums who are secretly ecstatic that their ship increased in size and value.  But what a lot of people dislike about the particular change here is that now it has 7 seats.  This is a scary number because we are apprehensive that we won't be able to solo the ship like the original post suggested.  Yes, I know it said 1-2 crew to operate, and perhaps that is still true.  What needs to be explained this week is what our additional 5 unplanned people will be doing and why they are going to be fun to have.  I really hope for a mini addition to the Orion mining post on regarding fuel operations.

Since we're extremely off topic, I'll steer us back on track.

I hope to use a Star-G (If I get one) to refuel with an exploration fleet or squad.  I really hope that we'll be able to refine and refuel without need to refit components at a spaceport.  I'll gladly sacrifice my missile pod.

Which brings me to: I hope we get both options stock on day one.  I don't want to give up my fuel collector for a missile pod with the Star G and need to acquire a collector on the market.  I want both because really.  I mean really.

Ben Lesnick has said many times that you can fly any ship solo...(including the Idris and Javelin)... This is the future and yes these ships have powerful computers onboard. The question is how effective you will be. Splitting up crew operations to NPCs will make missions more effective. Splitting up crew operations among players will make mission even more effective. It comes down to time, efficiency, etc... Vs the task at hand all equating to profit vs costs and splitting up profit. Ben did specifically mention on Friday that the Max Crew stat for the Starfarer being 7..... Was just a number they came up with for possible crew positions and that it can be run with far fewer crew.

I think that most people have missed CIG's speeches on crews.  You only need yourself to fly the Star-G.  If you want to fly it well, then you will need more people to man the various operations.

I'm not disputing this.  But remember, we're going from 1-2 people required to SEVEN.  That is a big jump for many people who wanted to solo operate.  Mind you, I don't have a problem with this I'm explaining the viewpoint of many of my compatriots (which I'm assuming for them, I haven't asked).  Yes we can still operate solo with some NPCs that we take on as crew-but they are expensive even if they're only getting a fraction of the cost of operations.  And, say, you wanted to operate a big ship solo in the verse to make your own way, this just slowly restricts your ship choices.

i was thinking alot about this and i think the question isn't if we should take Starfarer with or without Gemini upgrade, but to which one the LTI will be more worty (as we will be able to get a 2'nd Starfarer in the game ), and when i am thinking about this like this, it is a much easier deciesion, lets see both the options.

1) regualr starfarer ,  will mostly go in safe zone with low risk level, low risk = cheap insurance.

2) Gemini upgrade , will mostly go in less safe area's with higher risk leve , high risk = more expesive  insurance.

even the fact we don't know all about the insurance, still looks like a better deal for the Gemini.

also i just look great. (something like a full tanker in mad max I)

Enthalpy, right in one. But just like with the Larger HULL series, your cargo insurance will be the more painful part.  They said hull insurance will be a negligible fee, but will cargo insurance?

Can I just say that I love the fishtank in the Starfarer?

PSA: Starfarer "upgrade" will have the concept "flair" goodies.

Posted:  May 11
Edited:  May 11 by Chelsea

The Starfarer Gemini Upgrade indeed should have included the concept flair items. This has been fixed on the store side for anyone that purchases it now. We will be running a script by the end of this week to retroactively award the items to those that have already purchased/applied the upgrades.

No need to worry, it will be taken care of =)

Edit: Saw some people asking if LTI is included on the upgrades. The answer is no. Upgrades only change the ship itself, any insurance would remain the same unless specifically stated otherwise. So if you already had LTI, then applied an upgrade, you would still have the LTI. If you had 6 months insurance and applied an upgrade, you would still have 6 months insurance.

Edit #2: The VFG hangar will not show on the listed contents if you apply the upgrade, however you will have access to it.

I'm starting to have some concerns about CIG's attitude regarding ship internals.  The internal parts are what we will see while playing.  When we're deep in space waiting for orders or waiting to meet up, the ship's layout is what will help us remain engaged with the game.  If I'm in the black with a crew waiting on the word, "go," then I'd rather have an attractive space aboard the ship to spend that time in.

Can you go into any detail regarding the difference in the variants internals? (I want my Gemini to have that fish tank very badly)

We can’t offer too many additional details, but rest assured your fish will have a home In both the Gemini and standard Starfarer (unless you swap out the captain’s quarters for another room!)

CIG thumbs their nose at us by making it look like a fish tank is what we care about.  I don't want to be negative; I'll probably end up melting the Gemini because they can't give a straight answer.  But I simply can not fathom why they don't take ship internals seriously when that's what we'll see during the majority of our play.

edit: Lisa Ohanian gets it.  Marketing should listen to her more.

I like the new Q&A. The idea of earning cash by selling refined fuel at the fuel stations is what could push me into buying the G. Another thing is that armored mine layer concept, very cool. I'm looking for a ship with new options for earning funds (besides my Vanguard/SH for combat missions) and Starfarer is looking good for this! Still, I might pick up the Crucible and/or Endeavour in the future. Need to find a chart with all future concept sales left.

Any thoughts after the second Q&A?

Yes. That a single fighter cannot intake 390 cubic meters of fuel (1/12th of the fuel capacity), and that stepping away from the volume based cargo system they just unveiled to impose an arbitrary limit on refueling makes no sense.

I love my Star-G even more after the 2nd Q/A especially after the Q about the missile pod below....

It's likely that a single Starfarer and Gemnini can refuel even more than a dozen fighters (they admitted that this is arbitrary and they haven't measured it).  The Starfarers are really needed more so for the fuel guzzling Hull ships (heavy cargo plus over-sized thrusters) and large ships like the Idris and Javelin.  It's likely a fleet won't need multiple Starfarers but you definitely want at least one.

----------

^^^ STL Youngblood normally does a good job with these but this one he did a poor job (but posting to hear another opinion).  He was wrong on:

  • Gemini doesn't replace its front fuel scoop with the missile pod (it has both) - per quote below from 2nd Q/A
  • An onboard refinery is extremely important and sets apart a Starfarer from a standard Hauler of Fuel (not sure why he said this)
  • He was also wrong about it not being a good solo ship (if you  are not in an Org).  You will make a lot off of re-fueling other including if you want to be a S&R ship with an on-board modular med facility + get a modular repair facility (doctor / repair / refuel)

Do either of the Starfarer models come pre-fitted with a refinery? Also does the Gemini come with the means to collect fuel or does it come as stock with the missile system?

Both variants come with limited fuel processing tools. The Gemini comes with both the external nozzle and the missile pack (in the fiction, Geminis typically mount the nozzle rather than the missiles.)

I'm curious about the limited fuel processing. Perhaps just like the Orion mini game you'll want to upgrade the refinery.

Yay, something to work towards in game!
