MISC STARFARER VARIANTS

The United Empire of Earth military uses an adapted ‘rough and tumble’ variant of the Starfarer for their front line operations. The G2M Gemini, more commonly the Starfarer Gemini or ‘Star G,’ trades some cargo capacity and maneuverability in exchange for reinforced armor, increased shielding, more powerful engines and stronger versions of the three manned turrets. The Gemini also includes an optional missile pod, which can be swapped for the fuel intake unit on the ship’s nose (see below for details.) Missile pods can be mounted to either Starfarer variant.

External Development

The team at Foundry 42 UK has completed external whiteboxing of the Starfarer for its role in Squadron 42. This means that the exterior shape of the ship is complete and that we’re preparing to bring it into the game. You can follow the progress (and check out some of the details) below.

Can't wait!  Suggestion: After the sale is over rename the thread so that this becomes the home of all things Gemini. :)

I wonder if the name has any signifigance to the specs. RtV mentions a stronger double shield, but it doesn't say that the basic one doesn't have a double shield.  Is that the signifagance of the Gemini name? Twin shields?

I think that is what Ben did mention on RTV today - we will find out later today actually before the concept sale - usually there is a recording of RTV that I'll post later day....

But to confirm with my notes and with INN's notes.... it appears there is a double shield for the Gemini (perhaps like the Vanguard).

– New Starfarer has size up on engines, size up on three manned turrets, a larger double-shield.  It loses cargo capacity, maneuverability, and speed.  It has more armour too.  Clunkier, more protected version that the Military uses versus the less protected civilian variant.

Starfarer Q&A

My Qs:

- will Starfarer have self refueling capability?
- what will Starfarer refueling system be? Probe & drogue? Boom? both? or anything else?
- how many refueling points on Starfarer? can it do multiple refueling?
- tanker & receiver proximity for refueling?
- different refueling systems/equipments for different refueling speed?
- what effect/requirement will CTR, Cry-Astro and Fuel Pump have on Starfarer refueling/tanking?
- refueling Alien ships??? any extra requirement? do they use different fuel or energy source?

Gerald Qs:

The concept art shows point defense turrets on the tail of the standard variant. Will the Gemini have larger PDTs?

Is the Gemini giving up any functionality over the Starfarer? No built in mining cargo bay?

Does the Gemini require more crew?

A previous cutout showed a three level interior, but the new art suggests that the rectangular recess on the nose is the hydrogen scoop. How much of the lower two levels will be removed to make room for this? http://i.imgur.com/sbdEnZB.jpg

Will the Gemini be hardened against EWAR attacks?

Hope we both get answers.  :D

Ben and Jared (Disco Lando) of CIG address the CCU and LTI issues with the Gemini

So CIG is adding LTI to variants now? Heres Ben's response:

Why is this the only variant sale that has LTI. I was not offered LTI when the lancer varients or the connie varients came out.

At this point why keep up the pretense of caring about the promises you made during the kickstarter and just put lti on everything.

I'll go ahead and answer that one before the concern thread: the Starfarer Gemini is significantly 'better' in several ways than the standard Starfarer (there are some tradeoffs, especially in core carrying capacity... but there are enough areas where it's different that people will immediately think it's better.) It's also a ship constructed from the ground up for this purpose rather than modified from an existing chassis. With those things in mind, it seems unfair to only allow early backers to have an LTI version. (Similarly, the folks who are most likely to buy it are the ones who have been collecting lots of ships from the start... and they'll probably also be the ones who want both rather than be forced to upgrade.)

an upgrade is "significantly 'better' in several ways".. you dont say?

It is being sold as a CCU..from an existing ship. So how many more future variants will have LTI? How much more worthless will the pledging of your first backers become?
As of this morning it was *NOT* being sold as a CCU. The intention was to have people melt the old one if you wanted to "trade up" to the new one. That's one of the major reasons, in addition to everything Ben mentions, why the Gemini has LTI.

Then we were reminded a few hours ago that we sold the Starfarer for two different price points already, so doing that under the old system would unfairly penalize early adopters who purchased at the lower price point, because the upgrade would cost more for them. It was valuable feedback.

To address this, we're making a special exception to our previous policy on no CCU until flight ready. Does it break with what we've done before? Yes. Do we believe it's the right and fair thing to do for our early Starfarer adopters who want to upgrade for the same cost as those who came after? Yes. Does everything always work out like we plan? No, but we do what we can to make it right when we can. That's what this CCU is.

What will we do for other ships that have been sold for differing prices? We've got an idea about that, but horse before the cart, this is what we're prepared to do today to address this.

As for an update on the sale itself. We've got our art for the Starfarer in. We're waiting on the Starfarer Gemini art to get final approval and then we can post. Like most Ship Sale Fridays, it will probably be a long night for us here in the office. It will be out as soon as it can be, as well as the FPS post, and the Hyper Vanguard Force. And then we can go home and you can buy and read and play.

Until then, we'll continue doing our best for everyone here. Sure, sometimes it'll work out better than other times, and sometimes we'll have to change gears to address issues we didn't foresee, but it's all in service of providing you with the best solutions to a game's development challenges that we can. Sometimes you just gotta do what you feel is right for the situation at hand, and we feel offering an early CCU upgrade to an LTI Gemini is what we can do now to address the issue in bold above.

Here is my question...

So how did my 2 person ship go to a 7 person ship.... that seems a little drastic, and not at all what I had initially planned for. This was supposed to be my solo ship. How did this happen, and is it still possible to function with just one guy and some NPCs without being totally gimped?

From what I understand, you need a minimum of 1-2 crew in order to operate the Starfarer.  The max crew capacity is 7 for manning all turrets, crew chief, co-pilot, etc.

Which I get that I can physically fly with one while the other was in the 1 previous turret, but now with 3 turrets requiring gunners it does not seem feasible to only have 1-2 people plus a couple npcs.

My guess is that the change can be largely blamed on the starfarer being a design from early in the game's development, before they'd decided what to do with turrets(manned or unmanned), crew stations, etc.  Probably looking at pilot, copilot(always there but  unnecessary), 3 turret operators, engineer, and refueler operator(notice the catwalk out the back, makes me think refueling will require more than flying in a straight line).  Of course we all know that most of these positions can be either neglected entirely or manned by npcs most of the time and still achieve basic functionality.  A pilot and 3 npc gunners can most likely handle operations 90% of the time.

I picked up a Gemini. I don't know how much I'll use it, but I wouldn't dare venture into Vanduul or Lawless star systems with the regular Starfarer, whereas the Gemini is built rugged and has greater firepower.

However, I'm disappointed that the Gemini isn't more distinctive from the vanilla Starfarer. From the looks of it, CIG simply took a side-view concept pic of the Starfarer and photoshopped the guns so they appear larger, and called it the Gemini. I like that the Star-G has bigger guns, shields, and power plant, but I was hoping the hull would be modded with extra hull plating so that the fuel tanks weren't exposed. I'm disappointed that CIG seems to have simply done a $45 spec-upgrade on the Starfarer and called it the Gemini.

Hopefully the Gemini is still in the development and later -- probably when it's Hangar-ready -- we'll get a proper look at it.

Hmmm undecided should I melt my Standard Starfarer LTI to get Gemini or keep it & buy Gemini upgrade or keep it & also buy new Gemini.

Gemini has roughly 1000 less cargo hold which mean standard one got 150% more capacity. This could be quite important when supporting large ships. Tough decision.

Thoughts?

Copying this out of OP to show new CIG artwork in OP :)

Just now Reverse the Verse with CIG - just revealed that not only will the Starfarer go on sale but also there will be a week long Concept Sale of the MISC Starfarer Gemini ---->> See quoted RTV post below...  :excl:

I'll update this OP with more info as it comes in from CIG later tonight   :thumb:   Images will be different between a standard Starfarer and a Gemini.

See Twitch Link....http://www.twitch.tv/cigcommunity-

·         Starfarer sale later today – with Q/A – same price $195. – No LTI with this sale for regular Starfarer

·         Later tonight - Concept sale for Starfarer Gemini (since it hasn’t been offered before) with LTI – price $240

·         Gemini - Upgrades, weapons, shields, armor but sacrifices cargo. – It doesn’t set off any red flags like a F8 lighting would if you take it around the Verse.  Gemini - Size up on Engines, Size up on Manned Turret, Size up on Shield (two shields), but sacrifices speed and cargo.

·         You can upgrade from standard Starfarer to a Starfarer Gemini (but you could also simply melt it to get the new LTI concept sale).  There will be an upgrade though for those that bought the Starfarer early on at a price less than its current price.

·         Starfarer can collect and refine fuel so there will be plenty for a “fuel person to do”  - CIG post later tonight should have a concept image that will show this.

·         Gemini Concept Sale will be limited by time (one week) – not by limited number

stronger shields, better armour, bigger guns, less cargo.  Definitely meant for procurement and resupply in and around combat zones.  If you plan to fly in UEE space then the standard should be fine, but if you want to work on the lawless fringes...definitely gemini; a dead refueler is a useless refueler(and more robust ships won't need to tie up quite as many escorts)
