Carrack ideas. more than exploration?

Recommended Posts

I've recently been on the hunt to find what i believe would be my perfect ship, and when reading up on the carrack i noticed that it has the potential to not only be the king of exploration, but also the ultimate fleet support.

The extremely advanced scanning could easily be used to spot incoming ships well before any others, and with it also having multiple docking collars, the modular options for medbays and repair stations, plus the huge fuel containers to keep running for a long time, the carrack could be the perfect jack of all trades.

What do you guys think?

  1. There is No Perfect Ship - however you may find a ship that better fits your play-style and a ship you can identify and "be-friend"... kind of like Han Solo with his baby... the Millennium Falcon.
  2. There is No King of Exploration - Yes the Carrack is a nice exploration ship but so is the 315p, Feelancer DUR, Aquila, etc...  Some Idris-P may take issue with your claim as well.  The point is every ship has its +/- and some of the smaller ships have some better exploration options... like longer range and being able to fit through the tight (small) worm holes that the Carrack might not fit through.  Likewise a Idris-P has many other options (including carrying its own escort protection).
  3. There is No Ultimate Fleet Support - sure the Carrack can support a fleet with a Med Bay but I can list of many many more ships that would provide better Fleet Support --- for the larger ships the Carrack would actually be on the bottom of the list for Fleet Support (it is really meant to be a loner ship)
  4. Carrack is actually far from being a Jack of All Trades ship - Sure it is modular but there are many better Jack-of-All-Trades ships like the Andromeda, Idris-P, etc....

==========

Don't want to spoil your enthusiasm for the Carrack but it is far from the Ultimate ship.  If I was working with a lower budget pledge I would pick the  315p, Feelancer DUR, Aquila, etc... and not the Carrack.  I do have a high budget pledge so my exploration ship is my Carrack but... I also get ships more for our Squadron and not for personal attachment or constant use.   I will set up a "personal attachment" with the Phoenix and Khartu-Al (they are my favorite ships) - but no ship is the Ultimate ship ;)

++++++++++

These would be a good reference thread to check out in regards to this.....

Although it might not be able to carry as much cargo as another ship of its size, it could still haul enough to keep it interesting while in between exploration missions (or if only to bring stuff back and forth a FOB).

It will probably also be a good platform for independent operations as it is meant to operate far from civilization and probably support a smaller exploration fleet, but it will of course never be as efficient as a dedicated support ship.

Imagine a real life Coast Guard Cutter, they are nowhere as powerful as a Corvette, but can still be quite versatile and operate in lots of different ways while at sea. I imagine the Carrack being a bit of the same type of vessel. Good for independent and smaller operations, but nothing that dedicated ships can do better.

I picked up a carrack, but I plan on playing solo. Maybe this is a bad idea but I figure I can use it as a cargo ship. I plan on upgrading every defense I can. if attacked, my strategy is to disable and run.

The carrack is easily my favorite ship. And will be my ship of choice.
From what I see, the modules that can go in to it. Makes it possible to be any type of ship you would like it to be.
Exploration
Medical Ship
Cargo
Salvage

The modules can be fitted as Science Stations, Extended Fuel Tanks, Medical Facilities or extra cargo
The ship features on-board accommodations to allow for truly self-sufficient flight, including crew medical and repair facilities, and a mapping-oriented sensor suite.
