Aegis Vanguard - Twin Engine Deep Space Fighter

Recommended Posts

As much as I love my Freelancer MIS I think I may need to trade it in for one of these. I was going to use the freelancer as a medium attack vessel/escort but this seems a better choice.

Depends if you want fire power or if you want the ability to take a lot of damage.  We don't have the stats yet but its likely the Frelancer MIS will have more firepower (and only cost $165 right? vs $250).  If you think about it - if you are escorting ---- firepower is more important than being tanky on your fighter.

I think Voa is on to something.

The bulldog doesn't look very menacing, but it's strength may lie in it's defensive capabilities.

Have the wingmen attack the enemy, while it takes fire.

Agree.... and people may want to use a Connie / SH / MIS for escort missions instead ------- you don't need defensive capabilities on your escort fighter - you need firepower.

MIS vs Vanguard? I think I'll keep the MIS - it has cargo capacity for a start so it's useful in protected space too, and still a big concern if you detect one at longish range.

Doesn't mean I won't get a Vanguard, but I certainly won't be melting a MIS for it.. Maybe melt a Herald or two, along with an Avenger.. or not!

Personally, I'm *really* not liking the look of the Vanguard. Yes it's fancy and all animatedy, but still... meh. Interested in what the specs are.

I like the look but the Vanguard is really better as a deep space first respond-er / scout ...... than an escort - but we'll see with the stats tomorrow.

I will have to take a look at the stats and compare them to my phoenix but I suspect that the vanguard will be too similar in capabilities for it to be worth the cash for me. i suspect that anything the vanguard can do the phoenix can also do equally well, maybe the vanguard will be a little better vs medium sized ships but that's it I think.

I really don't think it will come close to comparing to a Phoenix... and maybe not even to a Redeemer / Tali / Andromeda (thus again call the $ price into question - they should drop the Vanguard by at least $50 but we'll see the stats tomorrow).   The Vanguard is a different kind of bird - its a long range survivor / first responded..... not really massive firepower / escort.

I think it really only matches up well in an Escort Role with a Tali or Carrack....... in almost any other case a SH / MIS / Connie / Redeemer would be the better escort (and they still all have Jump Engines)

With the Phoenix being $100 more and likely to be more upgradable/configurable, I can definitely see a cross-over of capabilities between the two. Not sure specifically where the Vanguard will excel over the Phoenix - maybe missiles or longer range? But let's be frank here, the Phoenix is a whole other kettle of fish in comparison to the Vanguard. It's not a log range fighter, it's an everything else.

I like the Vanguard as a Carrack escort. It seems to fit better than any others so far.. like everyone has already stated. I can't imagine using my Phoenix as any escort ever, so it definitely fills that role better. Although I still think a DUR-outfitted MIS will be brilliant at that too.

Can someone please clarify for us non-military types what a deep-space first responder is? Is it a recon vessel? It sounds like a pawn or a meatshield.. Situationally, it sounds like vacuum rushing into the cockpit. And LTI in deep space might be useless, yeah?

Most "carrier-based"  fighters like the Gladius, Gladiator, & the Hornet (and potentially the 300 Series, the Mustang, and the Aurora's)  will all have limited range (this is one of the things used to "balance" these ships against other ships at the same price point but with fewer guns & maneuverability)... Even with jump engines installed, I would not expect them to be able to go for more than one jump without refueling OR having to throttle back from "full power" in order to conserve fuel and make it to the next refueling station.  Furthermore, they may face even more limitations if they are landing or taking off from a planetary body, since the amount of fuel required to achieve escape velocity (and to a lesser extent controlled/powered re-entry) is a LOT higher than the amount required when flying in space.

A "long-range" fighter should be able to take off from a planet, cross the star system to the jump point, jump to a new system, potentially cross that star system (if this is an unclaimed "buffer" system), and jump to yet another (enemy) star system, cross that system, and make an attack upon a space station or a planetary base. If it doesn't have sufficient firepower to attack the enemy base itself, it could act as an escort for a long-range (planetary based) bomber (like the Retaliator).... and then reverse course and fly all the way back home.  All without requiring refuelling or any significant reduction in speed for the hydrogen ram scoops to gather fuel as you go.

Also... LTI is desirable for a ship like this, because it is one type of insurance that will automatically cover the basic hull & equipment no matter where you are...  Even if you are in the heart of Vanduul Space (where the insurance premiums for standard hull insurance would be astronomical... if you could even get it at all).

Here is a good analysis of what we can see:

I LOVE the way they used the p-38 for a base, looks meaty and like it can take alot of punishment, to bad my wallet is already screaming at me for taking the upgrade pack route for a gladius. . . :(

Bulldogs are usually flown by ground- and station-based naval forces, and are widely used by militia squadrons. Specifically designed to operate from planetary bases and engage targets up to a star system’s distance, the fighter trades some maneuverability for an extended supply of fuel and munitions as well as basic survival accommodations for a pilot and radar operator.

I would only count on them being able to go one system length and back, at least reading from the original description. I would not count on multiple systems.

Then again I don't see why you could not purchase extended fuel tanks for any ship that could be jettisoned if needed or you empty them.

And I agree they did use a semipopular desgin lol.

I see a good use in the wing being retractable. Actually to hole ship retracts, and this is a good thing, when you are under heavy fire. If you offer less surface to the enemy to hit you, the better, right?

Also the ship is for deep space, if need to reduce your size to reduce your chance to be spotted, the better. There is others situations that reducing your size could be handy. It really looks like a heavy and sturdy ship, and I also intend in buying it.

If I may say, using a Vanguard as an escort could be very worthy, more than a Connie/Mis/whatelse.... if the sensor suit lives up to his fame

This.

Trying to get my younger brother to buy one. To pair up with my Orion.

I suspect that the connie will be a better escort than the vanguard. The connie should have longer legs than the vanguard (being long range mercantile in one of its forms and long range exploration in another) and it should be able to carry some impressive sensors (looking at the aquila and at the mention of mobile command station). The vanguard will most likely be a ship that is used for intercepting medium to large class ships and not a ship meant for tangling with light fighters. I could see a vanguard closing on an Idris to take out a turret or shield generator before the Talis make their run but hornets will be covering the Talis not the vanguard.

I could also see a vanguard intercepting redeemers and other heavily armed troop transports or intercepting Talis and corvettes but Usually heavy fighters are not nimble enough to tangle with light and medium fighters although their superior firepower will end a fight quickly when faced with an opponent that is not careful enough.

Why does people on the RSI Forums think that they are entitle to everything......I think the "Vanguard" is a awesome ship. I don't think we need to change the ship just because a bunch of power puff girls(RSI Forums) want to cry and demand that the vanguard should change to fit their taste.

The base is the only place I know where people act like adults and can hold a civil argument about anything, I would like to say thank you to everyone for acting like an adult.

Back on topic.......Yes I agree with you @Booster Terrik, well done good sir. :)

Okay, I may hang onto one of my Super Hornets, my LTI Weekend Warrior package, but the rest are toast later today. May dump my Tracker and Ghost as well if I pick up a pair of Vanguards. I was so pissed at how badly they crapped on the Hornet's firepower, I'm having difficulty thinking of a reason to keep any of them. The Ghost in particular seems pointless for any combat duty since they neutered it.

Guys the stats are a 1 to 1 copy from the Orion so don´t use this as any sort of reference.

Also I´m interessted if they change the page up a bit, it still uses the old classifications for mounts.

Keep in mind, they're going to do it to the Vanguard as well. I'm waiting for the Idris nerf. Too many guns. My LN first stand a chance against it.

But yes, mine is for sale as we speak.
