Payment options RSI/SC Gift Cards - Be aware 30 day rule

Recommended Posts

Just thought I'd write a thread on an important issue that arrived in a recent transaction I did that whilst successful was not optimal for either party.

Having agreed a fee for a item - payment options were PayPal or SC Gift Cards. Since there is a fee for PayPal, SC gift cards bought on the RSI website were settled on.

There was very little info on the page and it became apparent an SC account was needed first. On registering and buying said cards which worked fine I was unable to 'gift' them to the seller. An error message popped up saying that due to some unscrupulous dealings there was now a rule that - Within 30 days of opening an account you are not allow to gift anything to anyone.

A quick check of the net found that others has slipped into this but there was no info on the site apart from a mention of the change in a bulletin months ago. I messaged RSI and had to wait over a week for a response which was essentially this was their new stance and they wouldn't gift the cards nor help in any other way.

Eventually the seller and I agreed to swap account info and after the remaining time he would gift them to himself and close my account.

In summary, whilst the transaction was completed it was a bit delayed and frustrating. If of course you already have an SC account then the 30 day rule won't apply but this might affect non SC members trading here.

Cheers,

R

I'm confused. You state that there was very little info and you would need a Star Citizen account......if your buying and selling digital ships for Star Citizen what would lead you to believe that you would not need an account? If I buy a digital sword for Diablo I would need a Diablo account....its pretty common these days.

The gifting changes have been known for a bit.

People need to check things before they jump feet first into something.

Uninformed buyer: I'm going to buy a car. *Throws money at a salesman* I just bought a car!

Salesman: Er, sir. You'll have to get insurance, register the car, take a driving test and pay for that, pay extra taxes etc

Uninformed buyer: Nowhere on this car did it tell me I HAD to do all those things!

Bottom line is, it is up to the buyer to do his research BEFORE jumping into something like this.

I hope he gave you the original email if you account swapped (Which does violate RSI TOS btw) because if he didn't he can reclaim his account.

Did you know that a player can only gift $1,000 USD per day? That rule goes back to the LTI days and is STILL in effect.

Tha more you know.....

Apologies for the confusion, the transaction I speak of was for a non-SC product.

The SC Gift Cards were the requested payment rather than PayPal

I have posted this in the 'Other Items' part of the Marketplace?

As a non-SC backer I therefore had to create an account - which was fine & understandable. But there was no information on restrictions applying to these cards on the shop page, in the descriptions, in the support section of the website- a google search now doesn't highlight any issues.

When I need to buy another car I'll be in touch.

Still confused. How did you expect to buy SC giftcards without a SC account? They aren't big time like Playspan etc. They are self issued and only available from the RSI webpage.

The restrictions have been in place for a while now, could they be better outlined? Sure.

You might want to fire off an email to CIG and now that you have an account post in the suggestion forum about this very issue.

A Google search doesn't highlight any issues....really? I just did the following Google search.

Star Citizen restrictions  Hrm...2nd link is for RSI gifting changes....

Caveat emptor! (P.s. give me a shout when your ready for that car!)

It really isn't difficult to understand what he is saying or his intentions, he is simply putting out a warning for NEW players that may not have read anywhere about a 30 day wait period when creating an account before people are able to gift anything purchased through the RSI website.

He was under the impression that he could buy the gift cards without having an account, I buy gift cards all the time for family and friends without having an account.

I didn't mind the need to create an account but the 30 day inability to transfer after creating said account was not highlighted in any searches I did on star citizen gift card +/- rules +/- restrictions.

The issue won't arise at all if you have transactions between players it's just for those of us being asked to pay for a non-SC product like another game with SC credits rather than via another method like PayPal.

At the end of the day, the transaction was completed satisfactorily on both sides.

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Gift-Cards/Star-Citizen-Gift-Card-100

"When you buy a Star Citizen Gift Card, you’ll be able to send it as a gift through your My Hangar section.

Star Citizen Gift Cards must be exchanged for Store Credit from their recipient’s My Hangar section."

There is no other way of sending it. It clearly lists that it needs to be sent and received through the My Hangar section.

Yes that is true and again I had no problem with creating an account.

I do agree with CloudyDaze however wrt purchasing other gift cards online in shops and so on where account creation is not mandatory.

Anyway, the thread was more directed at the 30 day gifting rule for new accounts about which I had searched but no limitations had popped up. This therefore has a knock-on effect in completing transactions whether for SC or non related products if SC currency is chosen.

I agree with you on that.

CIG could do a much better job of explaining things and having disclaimers on each page.

Turbulent, who is in charge of their web team, isn't the best at making things 'user friendly'.

The 'Enlist' Page needs to have that disclaimer on it for sure.
