F8 Lightning

lolololol @Devil Khan, you make me laugh sometimes.  I feel like every post you make is to counter everyone else's post.  I've been following the development since 2012.  I know The F8 is a fighter.  I know the lore that it won the "bid" for the next gen fighter to replace the Hornet.  I know that the Saber lost the contract to the F8 because the navy wanted more of a tanky ship.

I will preface future post with a "wouldn't it be cool, nice, novel idea."  /// The physical central dimensions are larger than or equal to the Avenger, Vanguard, Terrapin, Prospector, Vulture, list goes on of ships with an internal bed.  I was MERELY saying, wouldn't it be cool.... if they filled the internal volume with something on par with the Avenger's simple bed mechanic for logging out.  Doesn't have to be a long range fighter.  Just a fighter with the added logging out mechanic.

PLEASE note I am not trying to sound condescending or argumentative.  :)

I have to agree with Devil Khan on this, however. The F8 is supposed to be a carrier based superfighter, a bed would only increase its size or take up space otherwise used for engines/weapons.

What I would support, however, is the seat being able to fold back so you can sort of sit/lie back and log out that way.

hahahahah…… ok ok ok...… let me repeat...… I AGREE with Devil.  It's a heavy fighter! That is NOT in question and I am not miffed that it's anything otherwise.

In this thread we can talk about all things F8.  I merely stated that, wouldn't it be "NICE IF."  It was a hypothetical comment/dream not a factual statement.

The F8 Lightning is a heavy fighter, not a long-range fighter, like the Vanguard Warden. While the F8 seems comparable in size and internal volume to the Vanguard, I don't believe it has an internal compartment or living quarters, like the Warden. Not even a bed. I suspect that the internal fuselage is filled with components (power plants, shield gens, coolers, avionics, life support, etc.) and protected by heavy armour, which will make the F8 a tough nut to crack.

The F8 is a carrier-based fighter, so it wouldn't make sense for it to have a bed or living quarters aboard. Those would add weight to the fighter and occupy space that could be used for weapons and components.

It's also important for ship balance that the F8 doesn't have a bed, which would enable players to log out anywhere when flying it. It's a necessary limitation to require players to land the F8 at a spaceport or carrier to log out safely.

Heavy fighters are just that. More heavily armed and armored craft designed to do more than the regular fighter. They are built to pound their enemies into dust in a fight ever time through superiority of firepower or use of a specific system that gives them an advantage, like the F14 with its radar or the BF 110 with its absurd air-to-air armament. They could also be built to go beyond what the regular fighter can achieve with mission types, like the Mosquito or P-61 Black Widow.

The only acceptable addition to it would be a tandem cockpit seat that could remotely control the turret and systems to try and squeeze some more power out of it, since that's fitting to what we know heavy fighters to have. But it does not need a bed.

Doesn’t the Banu Defender light fighter have beds?....... YEP.

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/15862-Banu-Defender

So I am not completely crazy in “pretend” asking for the bed mechanic. But again, it was a thought for conversation not a petition to add it. 😊. End of the day it doesn’t matter..... I have to invest another 20k or beat the SQ42 and try to buy it in game.  🙁

Explain the hurricane, a heavy fighter and armour is paper thin and shield is weak :D.

The Hurricane's classification as a "heavy fighter" was controversial precisely because of that. CIG claimed that "heavy" referred to its armaments, not the ship's weight or armour. I never liked that explanation and thought that the Hurricane should have a different classification. Perhaps "Heavy Attack Light Fighter" (HALF).

Based on the Hurricane's combat performance in 3.2, it's apparent that the Hurricane paper-thin hull is a serious problem, as demonstrated here:

Like @Devil Khan said, the Banu Defender isn't simply a light fighter, it's a long-range escort fighter -- basically a lighter Vanguard Warden. It makes sense for an LR escort fighter to have beds because it can't be dependent on a base ship. (Although I think it would be awesome if two or more Defenders could attach to a Banu Merchantman, similar to how the Constellation carries the P-52 Merlin.)

Based on the size of the F8 Lightning, CIG could give it a simple bed behind the cockpit seat, similar to the Aurora's sleeper cabin. However, as I stated earlier, I believe it's a matter of ship balance. If a player flying an F8 could safely log out anywhere in space, they could pull lame game-y tricks, like using the bed-logout ability as a Get Out Of Jail Free card whenever they got stuck in a dangerous situation, like after griefing other players and the heat got too intense or they're in the middle of a mission and they exhaust their ammo and fuel. They could just logout and elude the consequences. Only certain ships should be allowed to logout anywhere. The F8 doesn't seem to have many weaknesses, except for its lack of a bed, so it's vital for ship balance to keep that weakness.

Thank you @J. Coren for your explaination of what a heavy fighter is historically, with multiple actual real world examples. That was a really good job. (Cool fact: the mosquito was made of plywood!). I did not know what the BF 110 was and that was fun to  learn about.  The term 'heavy fighter' has been thrown around longer than any of us have been alive (If you are older, I congratulate on your 98+ years).

A lot of confusion comes from playing video games, and even Chris Roberts own games where 'Heavy Fighters' were just 'Super Fighters'.  That does not seem to be the case with Star Citizen. Thinking that they will out fly or even be as tough as a cheaper light fighter is not appropriate. It just is not what a Heavy fighter was historically or seems to be in star citizen.

Just got a Conceirge E-mail saying that our stuff has been attributed to our hangar :)

I have everything (usable in the PU) except the F8C Lighting - which should be flyable soon - but per CR recently it may not be available until S42 comes out (we'll see) - I can go either way on this - like to fly it when it is flyable - but understand if they hold off on it. ;)

Per the image below - this guy got 2 F8C's - which makes since given a +$27k pledge...

It is attributed now. I can't believe I get 2 as Legatus. I thought I would get the same thing as a Space Marshal, but with executive skin.
