How did you decide your profession?

Ok so this is a little bit thinking out loud and a bit discussion about profession we will undertake in the PU.  Anyway, I have been thinking about my profession choice and trying to tie it in with my character.  I tend to give my characters a little backstory so that I have something to base all my characters decisions off of and that is where I get into a little personal conflict.  While T&I activities will be my primary interest and part of the story of my character and dabbling a little into exploration and combat on the side.  I wonder how a character focusing on the other profession plans to make a life in the verse.  Combat seems to be a bit easier to make a living by running escort, bounty hunting etc.  But unless you are discovering things exploration seems to be a pretty difficult way to make a life.  I had thought about making exploration my primary focus but I was having trouble finding a way to make it profitable so I settled on T&I primary.

Anyway

How did you decide your profession?

Since being a trader in SWG (my first PC game) before the NGE, I always liked to tinker with the trade and crafting elements in any game I play now. I have other ships to do other things, so I believe I can spread my assistance to all Imperium members.

Since owning a computer (!!! seems like an eternity) I played everything from MMORPG all the way to FPS and loved them all. Most games I always was in a combat role but enjoyed being a rogue Tdader as in Privateer, Feelancer and other games as such. I joined SCB because I like what the T&I Division was all about and can see myself being part of Imperium's growth making money from resources to mining with the various ships I can use for such missions.

Having multiple ships of various variants I can see myself having a cross genre within my squadron during our missions, not just for T&I but using my Freelancer MIS and Constellation for gunship capabilities. my fighters for escort, my Hornet Tracker/Ghost for forward obsevation or scouting and my Tanker for their fuel supply. Since I enjoy flying ships i feel confident that I will be an asset to my Squadron Leader and other members as needed..

Well! There you have it @ and hope I can be of assistant if the need should ever arise.

I have always just loved trading in games and even playing trading-driven games. I love Rise of Venice for instance. I was a miner in EvE, but I think I would like trading more. Oh and in like X3: Terran Conflict, trading was super fun. I enjoy combat, but I hate it when my ship blows up or I have to constantly repair it. The way I look at it is that, with trading, its not a zero-sum game. Everyone benefits from a good trade deal. Producer, trader, and consumer all are happy. Ok maybe not happy, but at least not dead. haha I just imagine myself going from my Constellation, to owning a bigger ship with my own crew, maybe even hiring a few guys as full-time escort. Eventually I might own a factory or something, but I would be happy just building up to a bigger ship, more crew, more escort, and even adding more ships to my own convoy. I will start small and eventually be known as a trading mogul.

Well I like to help people, combat is were most of the fun will be (relative to peoples opinions) and with 3000+ members...that's a lot of people that are going to appreciate me and others being on call to immediately help out. Its a very important aspect to Imperium and although trade and exploration is equally important they wont be able to function as efficiently without combat ops to back them up.

I personally plan on starting out in the PU by immediately making myself available as protection for traders and explorers. Although I would hope very quickly that  combat ops will be required for large military ops such as Bengal/station claiming etc ;).

Seems like with a classless game-system like they are creating in SC - you'll actually have the ability to change what you're doing depending on mood / interests.  I think that while many people have an idea of what they'll enjoy as a profession right now - until we are in the PU and see what the game mechanics are, it will be fluid.

A friend decided, I decided the same.

Woot, influencing decisions erryday!

On topic, I chose trade and industry because that's what I'm good at. Plain and simple, I'm looking forward to combat but I'm holding off on actually joining a combat wing until I'm certain I'd prefer it to industry. Nothing is certain at this point.

I love economics and the complexities of large corporations. That made my choice pretty easy. T&I

If you're looking for a back story for an explorer I suggest you hit Wikipedia and look up Explorers throughout time. There have always been people driven to explore and nations or companies willing to back them. Many explorers are more motivated to see new things than to get rich. But successful ones do both. Perhaps you are on the fringes running distant trade routes while also keeping an eye out for new planets or warp gates? Or maybe you sit in a major trade hub getting rich and spend vacations searching (that's how some early paleontologists did it.). Or maybe you can say you are backed by a corp hoping to cash in on a wormhole or salvage a lost cruiser?

Good luck,

That is one of the reasons I am excited for SC. The ability to do what you want when you want.

Good luck, I didn't consider gleaning inspiration for character motives from historical figures. Thanks

T&I was from the beginning on my favorite. Exploration looks pretty fun but for me that is something I would rather do on the side whenever I have had enough of trading for hours. Combat seems like it will be present in any kind of profession anyway, even just transporting stuff we will be under constant attack from pirates/aliens. T&I is what I was looking forward to because I love the technical aspect of it, trying to figure out the perfect route, make the most money for the least amount of transporting, etc.

As far as MMO's go I have always played healer, for some reason it has never appealed to me to be a damage guy. I like to have a solid, necessary position in my group and the fact that everyone is relying on me, makes me try even harder.

The last and main part was when I was reading through the economy page on the RSI website and saw that we can own parts of a factory, that just had me hooked and now all I want to be is a CEO of a factory, make sure my population/workers are happy and do big trade runs on the side  :D

I'm kind of planning to make Imperium my PU profession.

Everything from expanding it, defending it, to helping members with whatever I can.

I picked Combat Ops, because there wasn't a Do Everything division.

Plan on getting a large ship Frigate sized, but possibly not an Idris, I'm sure there will be various types of Frigates, and doing everything. Combat jobs, trade jobs, exploration jobs. Most likely all at the same time Ala Star Trek. Pick up some cargo on a planet, and a job to wipe out pirates, lure the pirates in with all my cargo, blow them up, find some interesting stuff to explore on the way to sell the cargo.

Maybe a Corvette class ship would be better.. Depends what CIG comes up with ships I guess. :)

I am a natural explorer. Playing any dungeon or MMO games, I always have to reveal every last bit of the map, so being in an explorer profession was a natural choice.

I also love to do some trade and industries on the side. I like the idea of hauling goods from one system to another with my Taurus.
