  1. I thought that maybe people on here would be interested in this because I assume people on here would be both interested in space, given the nature of the game this forum is based on, and might have super powerful computers lying around. If you don't know what BOINC is I will let them explain it: The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) is an open source middleware system for volunteer- and grid computing. Originally it was developed to be the SETI@home project re-done, re-thought into a generic framework that could have many uses, before it became useful as a platform for other distributed applications in areas as diverse as mathematics, medicine, molecular biology, climatology, and astrophysics. The intent of BOINC is to make it possible for researchers to tap into the enormous processing power of personal computers around the world. BOINC is being developed by a team of main and volunteer developers, based at the Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) at the University of California, Berkeley led by David Anderson. As a high performance distributed computing platform, BOINC has about 450,600 active computers (hosts) worldwide processing on average 5.356 petaFLOPS as of July 2011. BOINC is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) through awards SCI/0221529, SCI/0438443 and SCI/0721124. The framework is supported by various operating systems, including Microsoft Windows and various Unix-like systems including Mac OS X, Linux and FreeBSD. BOINC is free software which is released under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL). TLDR: program that uses your computer for science when your not using it. Its just something that I think is neat and its kind of important to me and I don't see any reason why someone wouldn't use this, it only does its thing while your not using your computer. Power consumption might be a reason, but come on, its not that expensive and most people just keep their PCs on anyways. I don't know, maybe everyone already knows about this, I though I should just put this out there in case people were interested and didn't know about this already. you can download it here https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php I think the most interesting one is SETI@Home, the other ones are good too though. You can also make some money from it or at least break even on the power costs, if you sign up for the gridcoin team, where you can accrue gridcoins which is a cryptocurrency just from running BOINC. I don't really know the details of that though, I've never done it.
