  1. Looking at upgrading my now aging system to something that will handle new and up coming titles. The new DDR5 platforms are now as must for going forward from a future upgrade perspective. My question is should I go with a Ryzen build or stick with Intel for this generation? All I will want to be doing is replacing the CPU, Mobo, Ram, CPU Cooler, and PSU (My PSU is getting on and a faulty / aged one could kill the system due to a surge) This time around Z Line (Intel) and X Line (AMD) Motherboards don't offer many more features other than a second GPU slot (redundant) than the B Line (Both Intel & AMD) maybe better boost clocks on some models maybe and power distribution im guessing? Also I generally prefer ASUS (motherboards) due to their reliability if thats any help. Many thanks in advance.

My old build was passed down and time for a new one, parts get here Thursday to start assembling. Assuming it will stay more than cool enough to push it some. Anyone have experience with this type of mobo's settings to give some suggestions?

    Ongoing Discussion New build

I am getting ready to build another PC due to the fact that my current rig is going on 4 yrs old (still solid) and I am passing it on to my kids so they can start to dabble in the PC realm. My current rig is a mini ITX. Although it was fun, I'm going back to a micro ATX mid tower size. New build - CPU- Intel i7-8700k Cooler - NZXT Kraken X62 Rev2 Mobo - Asus ROG STRIX Z370-G Gaming (mATX) Memory - Corsair Vegnance RGB Pro 16gb DDR4-3000 Storage - Samsung 860 Evo 1TB GPU - Asus GTX 1080 8gb ROG STRIX , but if new cards pop soon might swap. Case - Corsair Crystal 280X RGB mATX mid tower PSU - Corsair HX Platinum 750w Also gonna grab a 32" ultra wide to pair up with a 27" So this will be a RGB build with most of the components having that feature. I want to build a solid rig but not trying to max anything out this time around as I will probably do another build in a few years. Will throw up some pics once its done.

    Build help New Build Advice

Alright so after following other's builds, talking about purchasing another pre-built PC and being reminded I'll overpay and get less...here's what I've come up with: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/VXFFWX Last time I built a PC was about 4-5 years ago so few questions: CPU - i7 vs i9 Is it worth grabbing the i9 now or is the i7 8700 just fine? Why? Is the cooler I picked ok? Motherboard Completely guessed on this one, bad, good? Case - Mid vs Full I like the look of the full size cases, but more money. I won't have any cd/dvd drives. Does the full tower cool any better? Is there any advantage beyond the actual space? Video Card - GeForce 1080ti I'm finding all kinds of these out there. Does the brand matter? What detailed specs do I need to look at? All I've seen is the 11gb version that I want. Memory I'm going to get 32 gigs of memory, does it matter if I get 2x16 or 4x8? I didn't know exactly how dual channel works and if better to have all 4 slots filled or if not relevant. I see options for 3200 and 4000, is the 4000 worth the price or should I just pick up 3200? Hard Drive SSD vs m2.SSD vs PCI-E SSD? I'm lost on m2 and PCI. I see both labeled with some Octane drives, but PCI-E seems more expensive. What do I want here m2 or PCI-E and which one? I haven't followed how the tech works, read some, but still not fully getting it. Power Supply Again guessed here, assuming 1k is ok? Sound Card Are sound cards relevant anymore or is onboard sufficient? Picked a soundblaster one out, but not sure if I need it. Fans I just chose some, assume I need 4 for the case, are they right? Do I need more or some different? All suggestions welcome, so be brutal with me if I've chosen something completely off. I'd like to stick to higher end stuff, but if it's a waste please let me know.

    Build help Parts List opinions

Hey guys looking for some opinions on a build for a client He plans to use it for gaming but its also intended for schoolwork and general work. The main request was that it was not "slow" for general use (MS word/web surfing) and to play rainbow 6: Siege and other games. Im not sure if they have a monitor but ima say its for 1080p gaming Would you guys change anything? Budget version - https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/V49H6X Recommended - https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/TqvtwV
  6. Hey guys, I know there is a lot of knowledge to tap into here in the SCB forums. I have had a few conversations with close friends about their opinions and knowledge on various current hardware and want to continue hearing what I should aim for. This is all for a new rig. I am going with a budget of $4,000 for the tower. This is going to be a gaming computer, so I am looking for high performance and graphics integrity. The tower is going to support three 30" 2k monitors (I don't think 4k is in reasonable price range yet). Case: Still looking - want something that is visually appealing (show off cooling/components) CPU: i9 or Ryzen? (Friends suggest the Threadrippers) Discussions I saw here on SCB say i7 is good for SC - I am still learning what the differences are between all options RAM: 32GB or I just may go to 64GB because reasons (memory is so cheap!) SSD: Samsung M.2 2TB (Samsung 960 PRO?) - looking to have more M.2s connected in the future, maybe one (smaller) that is SC only HDD: Looking for a mass storage (maybe 10TB) array in a RAID parity, can come later (months) after initial build Motherboard: Looking at a GIGABYTE one - something that gives me the versatility I am looking for GFX: 1080Ti (x2) - looking for 2k at 100+ FPS (3 monitors) Cooling: I want to go all liquid cooling, maybe multiple circuits. PSU: I have not looked into a power supply yet, waiting to see what the rest demands with room to add more stuff later. Again, this is early in developing what I want and I am always welcome to suggestions. I want this thing to be upgradeable, particularly to add to it (M.2 SSDs and HDs for example). I already have keyboard, mouse, HOTAS, and G27 to plug into this thing. Looking forward to see what the minds in SCB present!

Build help New Build, Input Welcome!

Alright guys, I just had a friend ask me to build his daughter a new pc. She is a computer engineering student and will be doing drafting as well as delving into her creative side. His budget is anywhere from $1000-$1600. I would prefer to stay in the $1200 range but the kicker is she will need a brand new monitor, keyboard & mouse, and windows 7/8. I am beginning my search now for parts but would love to hear input as to how I can stretch the budget for maximum longevity as he wants this computer to last her 4+ years. As I see it now, i'm hoping a 760 would be more than enough as she doesn't really game and the grpahic intensive programs will mainly be drafting. She also likes the color purple so was hoping to trick it out with some purp diodes or fans. I doubt upgrading and/or overclocking will be much of a factor as she seems to be pretty basic with the hardware side. Basically want to build her a great machine that she doesn't have to touch for a long time. I will update this list when I pick parts but having a suggested motherboard to start would definitely help.
