  1. We have a place to discuss official news sources in The Watch Report, and here is a place to discuss unofficial sources of Star Citizen glory. Did someone say something salacious about Star Citizen and the web is on fire about it? Did you see a news story about how marvelous this game will be on a gaming review site? Have a favorite YouTuber you want to draw attention to, especially if they did an interview with a game dev or something similar? Want to discuss the opinions shared on a favorite podcast or Twitch stream? Did someone do something goofy on the Base radio? Let's talk about that here. I hope to see the opinions and ideas of Lantern Watch members here; while it may be interesting to hear about the ideas of others, this is a place to air our own.

Ongoing Discussion Saitek X55 to X56 replacement

I recently heard of someone getting their X55 replaced by Saitek with a X56, even though it was out of warranty. This made me wonder whether this was an unannounced company policy designed to mitigate the X55 quality issues and raise the profile of their support quality, so I did a test. The pin connecting the two throttles is only in the second throttle by 1 mm and under rare, extreme conditions it can pop out, causing the throttles to separate. I emailed Saitek, stating that the HOTAS was out of warranty, but could they recommend any options to limit the throttle wobble that caused the 2 throttle halves to separate. They asked me to unscrew the base and tighten up any screws holding the throttles in place and to let them know the details of the purchase. I sent them a copy of the original invoice and informed them that the throttles couldn't be tightened up, but I had used a cable tie to hold the 2 halves together, so the problem was effectively fixed, as I only needed one throttle. I got a prompt reply stating that as the throttle was faulty, it would be replaced, but as the X55 was no longer in production it would be replaced by a X56 and I was given a RMA and the return address. This was in the UK. I still don't know if it is a company policy, but it looks like Saitek are going beyond the call of duty to ensure they keep their X55 customers happy. UPDATE 17 Sept 2016 - A brand, spanking new X56 arrived yesterday. Now I don't know whether to keep it, because of the analogue mini-sticks, or sell it and see what else turns up before Star Citizen releases.

    Ongoing Discussion Saitek X-56 Review

For anybody thinking about investing on this stick...make note. Out of the box it already has centering problems(which would get worse over time) and the internal build quality is the exact same as the x-55. Skip to 4:42 to see the centering issues in real time.
  4. http://www.polygon.com/2016/2/8/10939752/mad-catz-executive-board-changes-rock-band-4-earnings It would seem that Mad catz is in deep waters financially. Their CEO quit before earnings report and with short googling it's plain obvious that they've been stuck in the mud for a while now. There still no news if this has any effect to the star citizen HOTAS, but for continued production, quality control and guarantees it would be bad if they go belly up. I've been drooling over the star citizen hotas but now I'm bit in doubt. Company this much in trouble is grasping for straws and taking nasty shortcuts often burning the bridges to what's left of their supporters. Then again what are the other options? they are still one of the biggest manufacturers for HOTAS market, there are others, but they tend to be really specific products like Warthog, its great quality, but not optimised for space flight (or gaming as it is a direct copy) and quite much more expensive than even 250$ HOTAS setup we come to expect off the star citizen HOTAS.
  5. Lando posted a thread trying to get more info from the Star Citizen community on what we want from the Hotas, please fill out what you can as this can change the turn out of what we receive. 6. Please vote in the [Poll] to register your feedback. Concerns about the current design: 1. The TrackBall Trackballs (like ball mice) are notorious for being high maintenance. Debris often gets inside the device and causes tracking issues. If there is going to be some sort of thumb controlled device on stick itself, it would far better to be a digital thumbpad rather than something that is going to introduce foreign material to the inside of such an expensive device. 2. Dual Throttle Chris Roberts has said on 10FTC that there will be no dual throttle support in Star Citizen. It would increase durability to have one solid lever arm akin to the X-52 Pro or Thruster Master Cougar which will open up more area on the throttle for switches and controls. Having a single throttle arm also alleviates the issue of losing access to buttons when the throttles are set at multiple positions. 3. Throttle thumb hats vs Analog thumb stick. Ok, raise your hand if you have a X-55, X-65, ect and use your left thumb for strafe (up/down/left/right) control. Likely the vast majority. You know what is not so good for strafe control? 4 and 8 way hats. They are completely binary and locked to fixed directional movement. An analog thumb stick akin to later day console controllers would be far superior. Not only would you have far more options for direction and amount of thrust, but it could also take the throttle position into consideration and reorient itself so that up is actually up. 4. Trim Knobs There is no "trim" in space. Rudder and Elevator controls aren't needed and only one zoom wheel is required in star citizen. The knobs just take up a lot of Real Estate for no gain. By removing the trim knobs you would have ample room for the analog thumb stick mentions in point 3 above. 5. Touch Controls It's bad enough when we butt dial people on our phones ... I am not positive that placing critical ship systems below a very active area in the middle of a dog fight is any sort of good idea. If this is going to be any place ... the throttle control area would be far more ideal a spot for such capabilities. Feature Suggestions: 1. Adjustable Flight Stick hand-rest. This is self explanatory. The X-55 flight stick is viewed as many as too big for their hands. An adjustable hand-rest / pinky trigger position would alleviate many of the issues. 2. Twist Lock Twist to roll is a love it or hate it feature. The best thing you could do is provide a twist lock on the stick that would make it rigid for those that prefer roll on pedals or hat to allow more precision of X-Y axis movement. 3. Dual Trigger This has been the hallmark of high-end sticks and if Saitek wants to be taken seriously at the predicted price-point then they need to have it. Comments/Suggestions?
  7. found this tidbit in this article --> http://www.killerguides.net/blog/mmorpg/summary-of-major-mmorpgs-and-rpgs-in-gamescom-2015-a-progressive-report Unveiled were new SC peripherals made by Saitek, that will come in different colors and designs to fit the different ship brands. To allow people to aim more easily, joysticks and throttles will have trackballs on them. Beginner joystick and throttle will cost $149. Players will be able to design a station with your keyboard and one peripheral on each side, as the stick and throttle are detachable from each other. Based off of the Saitek X-65, the high-end HOTAS setup will come with an OLED screen display. Also part of the SC product line are headsets and mics.
  8. Greetings Imperium friends! I've never used a joystick or HOTAS before in my life, but I'm looking to take the plunge for SC. I have been able to find a second-hand Saitek X52 in great condition for around $100 (a new one from the cheapest store + delivery would cost $170 in Australia). Would an X52 be a good option for someone new to the whole joystick/HOTAS setup? If anyone currently owns an X52 or has extensive experience with HOTAS in general, I would love to hear your opinions. The X52 has very mixed reviews, so I am quite unsure about whether or not to purchase it. Never having used a HOTAS before, I will probably not be as discerning as most people, so slight imperfections will probably not bother me. However, major design flaws or shoddy build quality are definitely a concern for me. I'm keen to know your thoughts... ------------------------------------------ Please note: If the X52 is not a good option and people want to suggest something else, I have been doing a lot of research online (of both standalone joysticks and HOTAS setups) and have had the following thoughts: - As I don't really know whether I'll be able to adjust to it, I would like to set a price limit of $100 on whatever I buy. If I really get into using a a joystick/HOTAS, I'm happy to spend big when PU launches. Therefore this price limit removes the X52 Pro, X55 and Warthog from contention for now. - I really like the look of CH products and with my $100 price limit I could probably pick up a Combatstick, but can I use this as is? Without the twist in the joystick, how would I roll? - The Thrustmaster T.16000M is supposed to be a great sub-$100 joystick (technically speaking), but design-wise it looks clunky and the button placement is less than ideal (both on the stick and on the base). - The Saitek FLY 5 looks like a good option, but I'm worried it would tip over. - Although there are many people out there who rave about the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, a few trusted friends have told me that they really struggled with it... thoughts? Thanks in advance, Lesailles
  9. Hey guys, I finally dusted off the ole Saitek X-52 for Arena Commander. Much to my dismay I had issues with the yaw control. When I went to the Windows Game Controller properties I could see it registering a right-hand yaw, 30% at all times, very shaky. Unfortunately there's no software utility I could find that'd recalibrate it. I did some digging around the net and found the following video where this guy shows you how to take apart the joystick to expose the Potentiometer where you spray this stuff you get at Radio Shack called DeoxIT D5. After doing that I have zero rudder issue. Awesome. So, without further adieu, here's the video. Hope you find this helpful: http://youtu.be/4ZGEmbJ7JuI
  10. While I was looking through Saitek's website today I stumbled across this blog post from the 18th. I did not see it mentioned in any of the HOTAS or Saitek post so I figured I would throw it up here for anyone who wanted to read through it. The TL;DL from the post seems to be at the very end: " Pete talked about the custom profile that the team would develop for the Rhino; the weapons systems, the shields, thrusters, all of that will have custom mappings on the Rhino taking full advantage of the number of rotaries and switches on offer." So while there still is no word from CIG about the SC specific joystick/HOTAS set up they had a vote for a few weeks back, it does appear that the X-55 Rhino will have some SC specific support from CGI. I'm still shopping around for a HOTAS setup, but if CIG ends up not working to create a SC specific one I will probably end up going with this one.
