    Build help Portable Flight Controls

So, I am looking at a possible job that would have me on the road several days a week on some weeks. As such, I am looking at portable flight solutions. I have 3 or so power gaming laptops I am looking at so that part is handled. But, I need some sort of flight control system that is somewhat portable other than a gamepad. I have never liked gamepads myself and would rather do mouse/keypad. But, my preference is something stick based. Anyone have ideas? The x-56 allows you to detach the stick from it's base. But, overall, the thing is very bulky and I would prefer something more portable. Just looking for ideas from other folks. Preference is for something portable and stick based. Some ideas on some solutions I have looked at: X-56: I like that the stick can detach from it's base, but even with that, it is still pretty bulky. T16000m/FCWS: I like the low profile of the throttle and inexpensiveness of the stick if I have to replace it but would probably need to construct some sort of padded 'brace'/carrier to protect the stick. G13/Orbweaver/Tarterus Keypad: I like this as an option combined with a good multi-button mouse or inexpensive stick Logitech 3D Extreme: This used to be my main stay until I started doing HOTAS. The nice thing is that it is easy and cheap to replace if broken in transit Multi-button/MMO mouse: I prefer stick based flying for the more 'natural' feel but could probably train myself to use a mouse if needed Gamepad: Non-starter for me. This is one of the main reasons I have never been able to play on a console. I don't know what it is about a gamepad, but I just can't do it. I will probably intermix Voice Attack as wel. This will mean I'll need 2 buttons for voice. One for VA and one for voice Comms. Can folks think of other ideas or have experiences with anything like the ones I mentioned in a mobile kind of flight solution?
  2. Alright, I know I have a different thread about SSD's, i'm sorry if this counts as spam, but this is a somewhat different topic, so I thought it deserved a different topic. My current computer is essentially 5 years old. I originally wanted to upgrade to a new processor, as I have an old 3rd Gen. i5-3570k 3.4ghz processor. However, obviously the problems that came up are that my motherboard is not compatible with modern intel processors, so I need to upgrade that too. This brought up ANOTHER problem. All of my RAM is currently DDR3, and all of the motherboards that I am seeing that are compatible with the most recent processors, require DDR4 RAM. So, below i've listed what I currently have, and what I think i'm going to upgrade to after doing a bit of researching. I believe everything is viable, but I absolutely welcome suggestions or comments. 16GB DDR3 RAM Current motherboard: Asrock Z77 Extreme 6 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157295 Thought for new motherboard: GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128835&ignorebbr=1 New Processor: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0136JONG8/ref=psdc_229189_t3_B012M8LXQW?th=1 - Decided on 3.4 since it is cheaper, and apparently less likely to overheat without water cooling Current RAM: 4 4GB G.Skill Ripjaw DDR3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314 Thought for new RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231929 Also, while this isn't so much of a hardware question, I was curious about cases. I currently have a Rosewill Challenger Mid-Tower http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147153 - it is a decent case, but I now have a Geforce 980ti, and am looking to go into SSD's (this case was not designed for 2.5" compatibility). Would anyone suggest anything for a new case, or to keep the one that I have? I know that the new motherboard will fit in the space, but it is pretty tight with the GPU that I have. I was looking at either the ThermalTake MK-1 > http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133191&ignorebbr=1 Or the COOLER MASTER HAF932 or HAFX (still not entirely sure what the differences are between them, aside from slight size difference, and side panel. I really appreciate any input. I know that i've been harassing you all a bit with requests for input with parts and such, but I don't want to build the wrong build, as this will be the first time I do any sort of upgrade to my PC. I built the original, but it has been 5 years, so I am far from a pro, and i've been out of the loop for awhile.
  3. I came across this SC performance and tweaking guide by YouTuber 'BoredGamer' and the results are astounding. Guide No.1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8K9Xfn6YlQ Guide no 2: https://www.redacted.tv/how-to-set-up-star-citizen-performance-guide/ Previously, my son could only run SC in 1080p at the lowest graphic setting, now he's running it at 1080p with the highest graphic settings and its smoother than before. It took about 40 minutes to complete the process, but the results are clearly worth the effort. If this has been posted before then apologies in advance. Enjoy.

    Build help Question about SSD's

So, i've been looking into SSD's a bit more seriously with all of the sales going on. Per @Gremlich's advice I am solely looking at Samsung, and Crucial - though i've pretty much ruled out Samsung as it is significantly out of my price range for very little memory. I am looking at 2.5" Internal SATA 3's However, I am curious about differences within the SSD's themselves. Looking at Crucial they have several different models. M4, MX100, MX200, MX300, etc. Does anyone have any input on which of these are the best, worst, otherwise and why? Or if there really isn't all much difference between them? Also, as far as my build itself goes, I am thinking 250gb for Windows operating system, keeping my current 500gb for videos, pictures, etc, and I am thinking 500gb SSD for gaming - but I am also curious if anyone thinks it would be worth saving up the additonal to get 750-1TB. I know this is a lot of questions, but any and all input would be much appreciated. I am trying to keep this practically expensive, but I can't really seem to find much about SSD's quality versus cost, and the reviews on Newegg are still fairly new, except for the stuff that has been out for years now. EDIT: Upon further investigation, i've decided that I am also considering the Samsung 850EVO - I thought vertical meant it had to be mounted a certain way.

Build help Looking for a new GPU

I am looking for an upgrade to my current GPU (r9 280) to be able to run SC at 1440 p with decent frame rates. Right now, I can play at 1080 p with medium settings and poor frames. What would be the most cost effective option for doing this? Would it be the 480 or would it be the 1070? Could a 980ti handle it? When this done, could a run a second(1080p) monitor for watching streams etc. (I am a complete noob when it comes to computers and I do not know whether this creates a lot of extra strain).
  6. If you are looking to upgrade your power supply and aren't sure what the minimum is or what options you might have, EVGA has a questionnaire to help you out (ostensibly to sell you something, of course) http://www.evga.com/power-meter/ after you complete the EVGA questionnaire, you'll get a discount coupon to use if you buy a power supply through EVGA's website. Here's something to keep in mind - After I purchased my GTX970 SSC and registered it, I got a 50% off coupon from EVGA to use when buying an EVGA power supply AND an EVGA mouse. I got the 850 G2 power supply and their X10 Torq mouse for $119 total cost, free shipping, to me after discount. here's their current B-stock for 900-series cards

Build help Would this be a good build?

Hello, I was wondering if buying this server http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Proliant-DL380-G6-Server-2x2-66GHz-Quad-Core-X5550-48GB-P-410-2PS-2-Trays-/181984594472?hash=item2a5f208a28 and putting an R7 370 4GB video card and plain 1 TB hard drive in it would make it usable as a cheap rig for star citizen? thanks

    Build help joystick mount

Hey Hoping someone could advise me on some joystick mounts This is my current setup (running dual T16000m joysticks) and I feel like I can't be precise enough, the only place for my right joystick is on my large mousepad and I constantly move it depending what game I'm playing. I was thinking of getting some kind of table mount so I could lover the joysticks and rest my arms on the armchair, that way I would only be moving my hand on the joystick but not the whole arm like i'm doing now. That itself doesn't have to be difficult, just take some measurements on what height I want it to be and find the necessary items in the next hardware store but the problem is that I play also a lot of fps games, mainly Counter Strike and I would like to be able to slide the joystick away when I'm not using so It's not in the way of my mouse. Same goes if I would just be doing 'on foot' scenario in Star Citizen. That got me to think of some kind of floor mount with slider that I could slide way down when I'm not using it but then I have the problem with the 'base', that it has to be heavy but yet may not be too big to be constantly in my way. This is my last resort as I've googled this matter and there are a lot of DIY projects but none that I've found that appeals to me, the closest I've found regarding usefulness and being easy is also in attachments, this is a table mount which seems to be able to be adjusted how far you want to go down but I still don't like the idea of taking the clamps on and off every time I'm flying or doing on foot battles. I've also looked into chair mounts but I would prefer to have my chair free and keep everything on the table Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated Thanks Óskar

Build help Rear Panel Slot USB

I've been searching the interwebz for the whole day and haven't found what I'm looking for. I want a 4 port (2 USB 3.0 and 2 USB 2.0) internal header to rear panel slot mount. Has anyone seen one of these? I have found one 4 port USB 3.0 but I only have one more USB 3.0 internal header.

Build help What is my bottleneck?

I'm new to PC construction and I am looking to upgrade my computer. However, before I go wildly spending hundreds of dollars, I like to know your opinion on what to upgrade. My PC: R 280 (3GB) i5-4670K ( 3.4 GHZ, 6 MB cache, LGA 1150, not overclocked)- with intel stock cooler B85M-P33 ( motherboard, mini-atx) 8 GB Ram 1 tb hardrive RX-700AC-8 power supply, 700 watts. PS: I would rather upgrade one part at a time, however, I do understand that certain parts must be upgraded together (motherboard for new CPU socket, etc.)
  12. EVGA has this over on their website - a "Power Meter" that can help you determine just how much power you should be buying, at a minimum, when considering a power supply. I tried it out to see if my 750W was sufficient to run a GTX970 SSC, an FX-8350, 970 chipset, 16 GB DDR3 1600 RAM, 2 SSDs and 3 HDD of storage. Of course, it's all to sell you a power supply, but, FWiW, after going through the questionnaire, I got a 20% off coupon to get an EVGA power supply (except b-stock) from their website rated between 600W and 750W. You can even refine your query by Efficiency (gold, bronze) and series as well. So, my current rig has the power it needs.
  13. The issue is Windows 10's digital driver check certification. Here's how to beat it. I had the same problem when trying to load the drivers for an Acer G257HU 1440p/144Hz monitor. (yeah, generic PnP drivers - don't care for them) This is the solution to temporarily disable the digital signature verification check. At first, this solution did NOT work because when i got to the point where I could select an option by selecting 7 or F7 on my keyboard, my keyboard, I found, had been disabled. After mucking around with some other solutions, I noticed that my "num lock" was on, so, I went into my BIOS and set the "num lock" to "off". Saved/Exited and rebooted after this. Then I tried the solution again and lo! it worked and I was able to install the drivers for my G257HU monitor. so, here it is again, just to make sure (highlights for emphasis only): Click the Start Start menu and select Settings. Click Update and Security. Click on Recovery. Click Restart now under Advanced Startup. Click Troubleshoot. Click Advanced options. Click Startup Settings. Click on Restart. On the Startup Settings screen press 7 or F7 to disable driver signature enforcement. Your computer will restart and you will be able to install non-digitally signed drivers. If you restart your computer again the driver signature enforcement will be re-enabled. But, if you have to do it again, here are the steps.

Build help Building a new rig

Hey people. It's been almost a year since I posted last on this subject and I think it's time to get a new computer. My current setup is too old and can't really run anything I want to play. After browsing some local boutique shops and seeing what they put in their gaming computers I put together a list, I wanted to run it by some people who might have a better understanding of these things. I'm not really that tech savvy but I'm beginning to understand the basics. I'm still in doubt on whether or not I should go for SLI, I picked the motherboard with that option in mind. Would need a higher wattage power supply if I get myself 2 GTX 980 Ti's My overall budget for this system itself is around 2500 euros, so i have a little bit more to spend if the pricing is correct on PCpartpicker Had to choose Germany for Euro pricing, there was no option for the Netherlands. http://de.pcpartpicker.com/p/JT9x7P
  15. Heya all! So my current PC is about 5 years old and is starting to stutter when playing newer games. I'm interested in building a new PC. I'd like to build as proficient a gaming PC as I can, maxing out at around $1400. I've been saving in preparation for this, and goddamn I want a decent build. One catch. This is my first PC build. SO! Advice, and finger-pointing at essential resources, would be appreciated. But mostly I'm looking for recommendations for pc parts and where to find them. I want to have the best parts that can fit my budget, so all shout-outs and recommendations are welcome. This is a gaming rig, and I want it ready for Star Citizen. Also, I'm looking for a new display, so any mid-range model recommendations there would also be appreciated. Thanks. So? What do you guys think?
  16. I just purchased a Thrustmaster Cougar Multifunction display.http://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-Cougar-Flight-Control-Panels/dp/B002HH9TRY I play to use it as extra buttons in front of my throttle; I want to reduce my keyboard uses. The problem is that it is not very easy to program. The base software is only set to run three preset profiles. I have used SVmapper to bind keys. The MFD works in windows, but it will not work in game. JoytoKey is another recommendation, but it appears to have a good deal of malware in it now. Anyone have any experience or advice with how to program them?

    Build help AverMedia C985

  18. I'm looking to upgrade my CPU in my gaming rig and don't have great knowledge about CPUs. Here is the MOBO I have right now http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131792 ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 My current CPU is an i5 2500k I'm looking at about 300 or a little above for a CPU budget. Any advice as to which ones are good for Star Citizen? Also Is there any point to getting an i7 over an i5? I'd rather save a hundred bucks if there is minimal benefit from an i7 over an i5. Keep in mind I currently use my gaming rig for streaming Star Citizen as well but plan on getting a dedicated streaming PC in the future and sticking my i5 2500k in it and will probably upgrade it later.

    Build help SLI

I'm thinking of getting a couple of 980ti graphics cards to SLI but I'm hesitating for a couple of reasons. I don't have any experience with SLI so hopefully you can help me answer a couple of questions: 1) I read somewhere that you have to set up the SLI to work with each game and that this takes time. I thought you just plug in two cards and it just works. Is this really the case? 2) I also read that you can experience micro-stutter from SLI. Is this really noticeable? 3) Does SC support SLI? I'm mainly getting it for SC because i'm having framerate issues in the hangar on a 680gtx. 4) Is your experience with SLI good or bad? Is it worth it for the extra fps? Thanks!!
  21. If you don't already know about this, go to http://www.speedtest.net/ select the server location (in the US and Canada) you want to test your speed to and run it. You'll get a download and an upload speed in mbps

Build help Suggested build parts needed

Hey all I am looking for build suggestions as I really need to upgrade my current PC. I cannot even run SC decently with my current setup. What I have currently: Intel i7 860 @ 2.8 ghzIntel branded motherboard850 Watt PSU8 GB of Ram @1600 mHzWindows 7 64 bitSLI'd MSI 780's500 GB HDD250 GBB SSDI will be keeping my case as it is the Cooler master HAF, I have my windows 7 system disk, tons of cooling options, the 850 watt PSU and the two sli'd 780's as I will upgrade those when the PU is out of beta and live. So I am looking for a new motherboard, cpu, ram and storage options. I really want to keep my OS and SC on one SSD and have everything else on a HDD (Steam, movies ect). Since I am Canadian the build parts need to come from either NCIX.ca , Tigerdirect.ca or Newegg.ca Ive also been interested in water cooling..... but im scared about the potential for leaks and maintenance...fans just work or dont, with no chance of ruining your electronics.

Build help Which GPU for 5760x1080?

Hello guys, first of all I never had a gaming desktop and only started doing research a couple months ago. However I am really confident with my current parts I will get, except the GPU. Now the biggest problem is that I want to run games at high or ultra with a 5760x1080 setup. The screens are already bought and won't be willing to do 4K just yet. My childhood dream was always to have 3 screens As far as I am aware right now there are four options: 1. get two 980s with 4GB as that is the most common and recommended setup, also because a single 980 is the best single gpu in the market as of right now. 2. is the sapphire x9 290x with 8GB each. Now after reading more and more, only some games will benefit far more from having more VRAM. After reading almost every thread/post on the internet I saw that most people are saying that VRAM is not important at all. However on the forums people say that VRAM is highly important, especially for 5760x1080 setup where the actual advantage of an 8GB card comes into play. 3. wait for the AMD 380, which is rumored between now and April to be released. 4. I was reading that we might actually get information about the 8 GB 980 or the titan II beginning of march, can't remember which event that was but, sorry. There are no testing results for a crossfire 290x 8GBs and only single 290x vs 980s, where the 8GB advantage isn't really clear. If someone with heaps of knowledge could please provide me with a possible answer for my dilemma here, that would be great I wouldn't waiting but not till christmas this year. Up till Mai/June would be fine but due to it being winter at that time in Australia I would love to have something to play with while staying in all the time. Money is not too much of an issue but don't want to spend more and 1K for one card. The rest of my build looks like this: (prices are in AUD) CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor CPU Cooler: RAIJINTEK TRITON BLUE 100.5 CFM Sleeve Bearing Liquid CPU Cooler Motherboard: Asus Z97-DELUXE ATX LGA1150 Motherboard Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2400 Memory Storage: Intel 730 Series 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Storage: Seagate Barracuda 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 290X 8GB Vapor-X Video Card ($619.00) Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 290X 8GB Vapor-X Video Card ($619.00) Case: Phanteks Enthoo Luxe ATX Full Tower Case Power Supply: SeaSonic 1050W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply Any further recommendations/suggestions are very welcome too of course Thanks for your help guys!
  24. Hi. as some of you may, or may not know, my current setup is not capable of running many high-end games these days. It's been a good 6 years and the old workhorse is still running fine, but i feel like it's time for a new machine The problem is.. I know jack sh*t about PC hardware. My current computer was set up with the help of a friend, and I trusted his judgement. All these components, acronyms and flashy names don't mean anything to me (but I'm willing to learn) I know there are a whole bunch of websites offering pre-build PCs, but the many comments I got from friends and colleagues is "Build it yourself, it shall be awesome!" So here I am, a blank canvas. Looking at all these motherboards, chipsets, processors, videocards, powersupplies and whatnot.. and it's all very intimidating. There's a plethora of build guides on youtube but I don't really know WHY those parts are picked or WHY part A is better then part B, how you know if they're even compatible or if they will fit in that damned case that looks so shiny. so what i'm saying is, I need some help. I'm willing to spend up to 2000,- euros on this thing (just the rig, not counting any peripherals) and of course the focus will be to run Star Citizen. As long as it doesn't sound like a jet engine and wakes up the neighbors, it's ok if it's not the most quiet of PCs. I know we have quite some time until the game hits and even longer until the PU goes live, but i want some options. Let loose the dogs of war. Or cats. whatever. sorry for the long post. I'm in you hands.
  25. Hey base, I am going off to college next year and I still want to be able to play Star Citizen and other games while I'm there, My old gaming computer broke and I am looking to upgrade but I need to save money yet have a powerful desktop to keep in my dorm that will run mostly any game with good performance at at least high graphics settings, star citizen at high is a want but not a need. Here is what I have decided to price out and budget but it is a little pricy at about $1600. Some of you may say "well you cant build a good computer for anything less than that but I am hoping that as a community I can get some help. Please look at my parts and see if I can chop the price down maybe 200-300 dollars but I can go lower cause I'm no expert. Run mostly any games at high graphics settings with smooth performance (hopefully Star citizen Overheating prevention dedicated gaming hardware, I have a laptop for any school/office related things. I only intend on using this for games idk if this effects hard drive and SSD harware. 1000-1300 price range if possible. Do I need an audio card? What parts can be downgraded for price but still achieve what I'm looking for? What parts can be downgraded if star citizen is my main priority game i'm looking to play?
