    Build help New Build Advice

Alright so after following other's builds, talking about purchasing another pre-built PC and being reminded I'll overpay and get less...here's what I've come up with: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/VXFFWX Last time I built a PC was about 4-5 years ago so few questions: CPU - i7 vs i9 Is it worth grabbing the i9 now or is the i7 8700 just fine? Why? Is the cooler I picked ok? Motherboard Completely guessed on this one, bad, good? Case - Mid vs Full I like the look of the full size cases, but more money. I won't have any cd/dvd drives. Does the full tower cool any better? Is there any advantage beyond the actual space? Video Card - GeForce 1080ti I'm finding all kinds of these out there. Does the brand matter? What detailed specs do I need to look at? All I've seen is the 11gb version that I want. Memory I'm going to get 32 gigs of memory, does it matter if I get 2x16 or 4x8? I didn't know exactly how dual channel works and if better to have all 4 slots filled or if not relevant. I see options for 3200 and 4000, is the 4000 worth the price or should I just pick up 3200? Hard Drive SSD vs m2.SSD vs PCI-E SSD? I'm lost on m2 and PCI. I see both labeled with some Octane drives, but PCI-E seems more expensive. What do I want here m2 or PCI-E and which one? I haven't followed how the tech works, read some, but still not fully getting it. Power Supply Again guessed here, assuming 1k is ok? Sound Card Are sound cards relevant anymore or is onboard sufficient? Picked a soundblaster one out, but not sure if I need it. Fans I just chose some, assume I need 4 for the case, are they right? Do I need more or some different? All suggestions welcome, so be brutal with me if I've chosen something completely off. I'd like to stick to higher end stuff, but if it's a waste please let me know.

Build help TM T.Flight Hotas X

Hey all, So I've got a T.Flight Hotas X and I was curious if anyone else uses this setup that could give me an idea of their profile/keymapping? What other tools do you use for functionality in SC with your setup, if any? I feel like the stick itself is too stiff or too loose no matter what I do, and I feel like I have deadzones as well. Trying to figure out what I can do to fix that besides getting a new stick+throttle combo.

    Build help Update my PC

Hi All. First post here. Tried searching a bit, but didn't see anything already mirroring my situation. With the release of alpha 3.0 I've gotten back into SC a bit, but my gaming rig (built in 2010) is definitely showing its age. I'm not sure if its my RAM or CPU thats really holding it back. I suppose its also possible that with the game being unoptimized, the performance I'm getting is just how it is. Anyway, I'm looking for upgrade advice for my current PC. I'd like to keep the upgrade cost around $500-$700 (I'm not trying to build a whole new PC if possible). Current Rig: Intel i7 950 | ASUS RAMPAGE III GENE X58 Exp | MSI GTX 1060 6GB | 12GB DDR3-1333 OCZ Gold (triple channel) Corsair H60 | Antec mini P180b | 850W Corsair TX850W | 2x Acer 24" Looking for advice on what parts to upgrade. I also currently have 1 sata3 SSD and a couple of standard 1TB HDDs. I'm basically thinking I need to look at RAM or CPU, but that means a whole motherboard swap as well, so I'm really not sure what I can get for ~$500. I've been out of the PC building loop for awhile now. (like I said I last build in 2010). Looking forward to your help! -grandmasterub

    Build help New GPU

So, long story short, my GPU fried after a bad accident with some thermal paste and I must pick a new one. Basic data: I have a i7 2600k ( admittedly old, it's going to be the next thing I switch), 16 gig of ram and a SSD for SC. So, to keep it short, which one would you pick between a Strix RX580 8GB and a Cerberus GTX 1070TI 8 GB and why? Thanks

Hey guys looking for some opinions on a build for a client He plans to use it for gaming but its also intended for schoolwork and general work. Im not sure if they have a monitor but ima say its for 1080p gaming Would you guys change anything? Build help window on a mac

Hi, Im new here. This game is just what I have been wanting Elite to turn into but it looks some much more! Has anyone ran SC on mac hardware with windows installed? If so was there any issues. Is this game going to be on xbox?
  17. My current dedicated Star Citizen SSD died a month or so ago and I had to reinstall on a slower spinning HDD. I'm interested in picking up a new SSD for my OS, and give Star Citizen my old OS SSD. Because my mobo supports M.2 I think it might be nice to get one of those. Mobo: GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 (rev. 1.0) M.2 Specifications: M.2 PCIe connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280 SATA & PCIe SSD support) Every time an M.2 drive pops up on a sale site for $40 people call it "Slow" and "Not worth the money" and when I go to the review sites, their recommended M.2 drives are double the price for 4x the read speeds but I cant tell if my system will support all its fancy features. I'm having a hard time determining what M.2 read speeds would be ideal for me without being "Not worth the money" or "Overkill" for my current hardware and price range. Right now I'm looking at: MyDigitalSSD BPX 80mm (2280) M.2 PCI Express 3.0 x4 (PCIe Gen3 x4) NVMe MLC SSD (240GB) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M4OO1FT/ It touted a lot of features like PCI Express® Gen 3 x4 which I don't know if my board even supports. Edit: Reading an amazon review they state to get the max performance of the above drive I need to make sure my M.2 slot supports 4x lanes (not clear on the Mobo's documents), and has NVMe support (I thought Windows 10 covered that). Am I wasting my money on M.2 and should just stick with SATA SSD's? Should I wait for a game changing tech around the corner?

    Build help 4k monitor suggestions.

Hey all, So I recently picked up a 1080ti card and boy does my game run so much better now. With that card power comes the opportunity to play in 4k. What I have gathered is I need a 4k monitor that has support for HDR and 1-4 ms of response time. I am looking for a screen that's 24-32 inches in size. Would anyone have any suggestions on monitors that fit those two criteria? Keep in mind I'd like nice colours and such....why pay hundreds/thousands to have washed out colours? Thanks!
  19. Hey guys, I know there is a lot of knowledge to tap into here in the SCB forums. I have had a few conversations with close friends about their opinions and knowledge on various current hardware and want to continue hearing what I should aim for. This is all for a new rig. I am going with a budget of $4,000 for the tower. This is going to be a gaming computer, so I am looking for high performance and graphics integrity. The tower is going to support three 30" 2k monitors (I don't think 4k is in reasonable price range yet). Case: Still looking - want something that is visually appealing (show off cooling/components) CPU: i9 or Ryzen? (Friends suggest the Threadrippers) Discussions I saw here on SCB say i7 is good for SC - I am still learning what the differences are between all options RAM: 32GB or I just may go to 64GB because reasons (memory is so cheap!) SSD: Samsung M.2 2TB (Samsung 960 PRO?) - looking to have more M.2s connected in the future, maybe one (smaller) that is SC only HDD: Looking for a mass storage (maybe 10TB) array in a RAID parity, can come later (months) after initial build Motherboard: Looking at a GIGABYTE one - something that gives me the versatility I am looking for GFX: 1080Ti (x2) - looking for 2k at 100+ FPS (3 monitors) Cooling: I want to go all liquid cooling, maybe multiple circuits. PSU: I have not looked into a power supply yet, waiting to see what the rest demands with room to add more stuff later. Again, this is early in developing what I want and I am always welcome to suggestions. I want this thing to be upgradeable, particularly to add to it (M.2 SSDs and HDs for example). I already have keyboard, mouse, HOTAS, and G27 to plug into this thing. Looking forward to see what the minds in SCB present!

  22. This will be a shorter thread than the other two I started. It should just be the basics of building your own gaming computer and I hope it gets pinned. The others are for those of us who have already built their rigs and want to modify or augment. This one is just about building your first rig. I'll have building videos, links, and some troubleshooting advice. Everybody feel free to contribute, but keep it on track as a noob thread. Assume ignorance of the process, but don't denigrate anybody. Usually, Tom's Hardware has lots of good info and advice. Here are just the basics. Cooling options for your CPU can be found in the other thread Computer rig accessories. First things first, how much do you want to spend and when do you want this computer ready to use. so, start here to get an idea of how much money you could be spending depending on the level of gaming computer you want. http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-guide-build-your-own-pc/ <-- this being said, use pcpartpicker.com to spec out your computer before you start buying components. It's pretty good at telling you where the best prices can be found. EVGA has many components to build a whole computer out of so check their B-stock page for deals to help keep your costs down or better performance for your allocated money. CPUs: https://elitegamingcomputers.com/the-best-gaming-cpus/ GPUs: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-gpus,4380.html Computer cases: Aesthetics, volume usage, and number of fan spaces are important. You can use a micro-ITX or Full Tower. Don't go with a really cheap brand though: http://www.tomshardware.com/t/cases/ This first video is pretty easy to follow. Okay got all those components installed the way they should be? POST beep codes Computer won't post, crap! Time to troubleshoot. Remember these steps: Fault/Isolate; Remove/Replace; Test/Verify. google this: "computer will not post" to find loads of info http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000607.htm https://www.computerforum.com/threads/tech-guide-diagnosing-a-pc-which-will-not-post-or-start.209946/ old, but still relevant If it starts but keeps shutting down of maybe you broke it

Build help Need some build advice!

While I'm saving up for a super-build in a few years time, I got a cash gift of 150 pounds a few weeks ago and been thinking about upgrading my rig. I dusted it off and added the processor and now the specs are as follows: Mobo - Asus P8P67 (REV 3.1) CPU - i7 3770k RAM - Kingston 16GB DDR3 1600Hz (2x8GB) -> https://www.kingston.com/en/memory/search/?partid=kvr16n11/8 GPU - ATI Radeon HD 6970 2GB twin frozr (MSI) PSU - Mushkin 750W My question is this... what component can I upgrade to improve my SC and gaming experience within the 150 pound budget? Would it be worth getting a mid-range GPU around the 150 pound price range like the GTX 1050Ti 4GB?

Build help Noisy AOI cooler pump

Hey folks, I was wondering if anyone could help me with something. I build my rig a year ago and everything was going great. Everything was softly purring like a content kitten. Lately my FractalDesign Kelvin T12 AIO CPU cooler's pump has become rather noisy and I don't know what the problem is and what to do. When i boot up its running quiet for a bit... then there's a sort of.. *splorch* sound of liquid moving and then the pump starts whirring like an angry fat bumblebee. Ive checked the connections and everything is still secured tightly and there's luckily no leaks. The thought of trapped air in the pump has crossed my mind but I'm unsure how to fix that. I still need to check if the level of coolant is still good though according to the manual it only needs a refill every 2 years or so. any thoughts? Thx!

    Build help Build HOTAS setup

Hello Pilots, I'm on my way to build/Modify my Arrozi Verona to include my Saitek X55 HOTAS. While I spend many hours to look around on the web what was already build for various gaming chair, I started to wonder what would be the best to place the joystick, on the right side or in the middle between legs? I think I would feel more confortable to place the joystick on the right, but if any of you already made the test I would be interrested to know which place you choose and why? Fly Safe!
