Whatever happened to one of the first stretch goals?

I took a moment to look at what everyone's pledge money has achieved in unlocking for SC.  I missed out on being one of the earliest backers because I wasn't aware that Chris Roberts was starting to create a new game.  I'm sure I would have twice the fleet I currently have now if I did.

When I looked at some of the stretch goals that everyone unlocked through their pledges, I noticed that one pledge stood out to me.  That is the Cruiser that was unlocked at $4,500,000.  That was back in 2012 and I haven't heard anything more about the Cruiser since.  Has anyone with their ear to the ground heard anything about this?  I doubt I could afford a Cruiser since an Idris costs as much as my entire fleet, but I'd LOVE to see what that will look like!

Not sure, 890 jump?

Interesting, but I'm pretty sure a Cruiser is larger than a frigate in most naval fleets, but I could be wrong.

On a side note: That's an outstanding sig you got there Rellim!

To my knowledge is wasn't intended to be a pledgeable ship, just a really big capital ship to complement the Bengal and escort carrier(along with the Javelin destroyer and any battleship/battlecruiser type vessels they create), so it would be one of the persistent capturable ships.  I haven't heard anything about it, but I'd be exceedingly surprised if they'd taken it off the table, but at this point it certainly won't be a priority since its completion wouldn't be required for anything coming within the next year or more.  Squadron 42s first chapter will probably be Idris and maybe station based, I'd expect major fleet actions for later chapters so that puts off the need to get a cruiser completed.  Other than that the PU proper is still far off so again no need to hurry on assets that aren't immediately needed.

  • Star Citizen will launch with 60 star systems.
  • Star Citizen will feature an additional playable ship class, the cruiser.
  • All Kickstarter goals unlocked
    • All backers before October 29, 2012 will start Star Citizen with a Class I Repair Bot in their garage.
    • All backers before November 8, 2012 will start Star Citizen with 500 additional credits.
    • Extended hardcore flight sim controller support: Flight Chairs, multiple monitors, Track-IR, MFD (Multi Function Displays) and more on launch.
    • Star Citizen will feature four additional playable ship classes: Idris class corvette, Origin M50, Drake Interplanetary Caterpillar and destroyers.
    • Star Citizen will feature two additional base types: Vanduul trading posts and hidden smuggler asteroids.
    • Star Citizen will feature an additional alien race, the Kr’Thak.

So when they say playable did they mean fly around it?  I'm pretty sure they meant something that we could fly, although with ships getting larger that might put a wrench in things.  Definitely wouldn't be able to land it I would imagine.  The next question would be where on the size chart would a cruiser fit?  I'm thinking a destroyer is usually smaller than a cruiser so I might ask one of the navy guys I work with.

Playable doesn't necessarily mean player-owned. You can capture it, and pilot it. In a future sq42 mission (possibly) you can be tasking with piloting / navigating a cruiser. So it's playable. But you won't be able to buy / pledge for it. But you can capture it. But since it will be a persistant ship it will not be safe when you or your buddy logs out.

Also, IMO, a cruiser is larger than a destroyer according to the charts I've seen. Frigate < Destroyer < Cruiser. Probably bristling will big Railgun turrets not unlike today's ships. We may even have seen a silhouette of it floating around from one of the livestreams, but it's unconfirmed and we don't know which silhouette is which. :)

I think they are keeping it under wraps for now. We only got our first peek of the escort carrier a couple of months ago.

I must say the capital ship lineup is looking good:

Bengal Carrier

Pegasus Escort Carrier

Unknown Battlecruiser ($17 million stretch goal)

Unknown Cruiser ($4.5 million stretch goal)

Javelin Destroyer

Idris Frigate

Unknown Corvette

Hmm, I think those are all the playable capital ships we will get in the begining.

I totally excpect the cruiser and battlecruiser to focus on more anti capital weaponry and heavier armor than the Idris and Javelin while being more vulnerable to bombers.

As Sq42 seems to start on some remote mining station and feature mainly the Idris at first it is expected that they will only feature the bigger capships in later parts of the campaign and some maybe even only in PU. I totally expect the Bengal to be in though just because Tiger Claw :). Also they are working on the escort carrier.

They might go with some progression on the capship you are based during the 5 Sq42 episodes from Idris to Panther to Bengal.

Actually I am quite curious in seeing what role the cruisers will fill.

Carriers are a no brainier, fighter platforms.

Destroyers will be the military escorts for those carriers. Good and fast all around ships with both anti fighter and capital armament.

Frigates and corvettes will be escort and patrol ships during convoys and in general areas not to far away from a larger military presence.

Cruisers traditionally have the capability of operating independently, and they could serve just as that. When a carrier is to much bother, they can send a cruiser and some destroyer escorts to have a military presence in the sector.

Battle cruisers could be more guns and more defense when there is need for a stronger military presence.

CIG hasn't forgotten about the Cruiser stretch goal. It's in development along with the other capital ships, but it's low on the priority list, because backers won't be able to buy it or fly it in AC.

The Javelin Destroyer wasn't intended to be buyable either -- the Idris was supposed to be the largest ship a backer could buy -- but after the Javelin was revealed in early 2014 the community's reaction was so positive that CIG realized that backers were willing to buy it. So they offered the Destroyer for $2500 USD during the 2014 Anniversary Sale. I doubt CIG will cave and offer the Cruiser for sale.

The Cruiser probably won't be ready until the PU, or possibly SQ42. If the Cruiser is included in SQ42, it will probably be a "shell ship" without the interior modelled. That'll be enough for it to serve as an AI-controlled ship for singleplayer battles.

As amazingly detailed as the ships' exteriors are, it's actually much easier to design and complete the exterior; the interior takes much longer, and the larger the ship the more difficult the interior is to complete. So the Cruiser is going to take a while.

Yeh it will just be another capital ship in the pipework's but as other say not priority.

Idris, Jav, Pegasus and Bengal should feature in SQ42 so they are priority but these definitely wont be the only caps.

Cruisers and Battlecruisers historically have been large, heavily armed ships but with less armour than Battleships. This potentially makes them cheaper, quicker to manufacture and most importantly a lot quicker. They were used heavily in the British Empire, the ship was suited because the empire was spread thinly across the globe and these ships could move quickly to areas of interest and bring very heavy weapons to bear.

This role could easily fit the UEE.
